1. Les Chefs des maisons patriarcales de la famille des fils de Galaad, fils de Machir, fils de Manassé, d'entre les familles des fils de Joseph, s'étant approchés, parlèrent devant Moïse et devant les princes, chefs de maisons patriarcales des enfants d'Israël.

1. The heads of the ancestral houses in the clan of descendants of Gilead, son of Machir, son of Manasseh-one of the Josephite clans-came up and laid this plea before Moses and the priest Eleazar and before the princes who were the heads of the ancestral houses of the other Israelites.

2. Ils dirent: «Yahweh a ordonné à mon seigneur de donner par le sort le pays en héritage aux enfants d'Israël; mon seigneur a aussi reçu de Yahweh l'ordre de donner l'héritage de Salphaad, notre frère, à ses filles.

2. They said: "The LORD commanded you, my lord, to apportion the land by lot among the Israelites; and you, my lord, were also commanded by the LORD to give the heritage of our kinsman Zelophehad to his daughters.

3. Si elles se marient à l'un des fils d'une autre tribu des enfants d'Israël, leur héritage sera retranché de l'héritage de nos pères et il s'ajoutera à celui de la tribu dont elles feront partie, et il sera retranché du lot de notre héritage.

3. But if they marry into one of the other Israelite tribes, their heritage will be withdrawn from our ancestral heritage and will be added to that of the tribe into which they marry; thus the heritage that fell to us by lot will be diminished.

4. Et quand viendra le jubilé pour les enfants d'Israël, leur héritage sera ajouté à celui de la tribu dont elles feront partie, et leur héritage sera retranché de l'héritage de la tribu de nos pères.»

4. When the Israelites celebrate the jubilee year, the heritage of these women will be permanently added to that of the tribe into which they marry and will be withdrawn from that of our ancestral tribe."

5. Moïse donna ce commandement aux enfants d'Israël, sur l'ordre de Yahweh; il dit: «La tribu des fils de Joseph a bien parlé.

5. So Moses gave this regulation to the Israelites according to the instructions of the LORD: "The tribe of the Josephites are right in what they say.

6. Voici ce qu'ordonne Yahweh au sujet des filles de Salphaad: elles se marieront à qui elles voudront, pourvu qu'elles se marient dans une famille de la tribu de leur père;

6. This is what the LORD commands with regard to the daughters of Zelophehad: They may marry anyone they please, provided they marry into a clan of their ancestral tribe,

7. ainsi l'héritage des enfants d'Israël ne passera pas d'une tribu à une autre tribu, et les enfants d'Israël s'attacheront chacun à l'héritage de la tribu de ses pères.

7. so that no heritage of the Israelites will pass from one tribe to another, but all the Israelites will retain their own ancestral heritage.

8. Toute fille possédant un héritage dans quelque tribu des enfants d'Israël se mariera avec un homme d'une famille de la tribu de son père, afin que les enfants d'Israël conservent chacun l'héritage de ses pères.

8. Therefore, every daughter who inherits property in any of the Israelite tribes shall marry someone belonging to a clan of her own ancestral tribe, in order that all the Israelites may remain in possession of their own ancestral heritage.

9. Aucun héritage ne passera d'une tribu à une autre tribu, mais les tribus des enfants d'Israël s'attacheront chacune à son héritage.»

9. Thus, no heritage can pass from one tribe to another, but all the Israelite tribes will retain their own ancestral heritage."

10. Comme Yahweh l'avait ordonné à Moïse, ainsi firent les filles de Salphaad.

10. The daughters of Zelophehad obeyed the command which the LORD had given to Moses.

11. Maala, Thersa, Hégla, Melcha et Noa, filles de Salphaad, se marièrent avec des fils de leurs oncles;

11. Mahlah, Tirzah, Hoglah, Milcah and Noah, Zelophehad's daughters, married relatives on their father's side

12. elles se marièrent dans les familles des fils de Manassé, fils de Joseph, et ainsi leur héritage resta dans la tribu de la famille de leur père.

12. within the clans of the descendants of Manasseh, son of Joseph; hence their heritage remained in the tribe of their father's clan.

13. Telles sont les ordonnances et les lois que Yahweh donna par Moïse aux enfants d'Israël, dans les plaines de Moab, près du Jourdain, vis-à-vis de Jéricho.$

13. These are the commandments and decisions which the LORD prescribed for the Israelites through Moses, on the plains of Moab beside the Jericho stretch of the Jordan.
