1 Maccabées, 8

1. Or, Judas entendit parler des Romains : ils sont, lui dit-on, puissants dans les combats; ils montrent de la bienveil-lance à tous ceux qui s'attachent à leur cause et font amitié avec quiconque vient à eux, et ils sont puissants dans les com-bats.

1. Judas had heard of the reputation of the Romans. They were valiant fighters and acted amiably to all who took their side. They established a friendly alliance with all who applied to them.

2. On lui raconta leurs guerres et les exploits accomplis par eux chez les Galates, qu'ils avaient soumis et rendus tributaires; tout ce qu'ils avaient fait dans le pays d'Espagne, pour s'emparer des mines d'or et d'argent qui s'y trou-vent, et comment ils avaient soumis tout ce pays par leur prudence et leur pa-tience:

2. He was also told of their battles and the brave deeds that they had performed against the Gauls, conquering them and forcing them to pay tribute.

3. They had gotten possession of the silver and gold mines in Spain,

4. ce pays était très éloigné d'eux. Il en avait été de même des rois oui étalent venus les attaquer des extrémités de la terre; ils les avaient battus et frap-pés d'une grande plaie, et les autres leur paient un tribut annuel.

4. and by planning and persistence had conquered the whole country, although it was very remote from their own. They had crushed the kings who had come against them from the far corners of the earth and had inflicted on them severe defeat, and the rest paid tribute to them every year.

5. Ils avaient vaincu à la guerre Philippe et Persée, roi des Céthéens, et ceux qui avaient pris les armes contre eux, et ils les avaient soumis.

5. Philip and Perseus, king of the Macedonians, and the others who opposed them in battle had been overwhelmed and subjugated.

6. Antiochus le Grand, roi de l'Asie, qui s'était avancé contre eux pour les combattre avec cent vingt élé-phants, de la cavalerie, des chariots et une très puissante armée, avait été aussi battu par eux;

6. Antiochus the Great, king of Asia, who had fought against them with a hundred and twenty elephants and with cavalry and chariots and a very great army, had been defeated by them.

7. ils l'avaient pris vivant et lui avaient imposé l'engagement de leur payer, lui et ses successeurs, un tribut considérable, de livrer des otages et de céder une partie de son royaume,

7. They had taken him alive and obliged him and the kings who succeeded him to pay a heavy tribute, to give hostages and a section of

8. savoir le pays de l'Inde, la Médie et la Lydie, et des portions de ses plus belles provinces, et, après les avoir reçues de lui, ils les avaient cédées an roi Eumène.

8. Lycia, Mysia, and Lydia from among their best provinces. The Romans took these from him and gave them to King Eumenes.

9. Ceux de la Grèce ayant formé le des-sein d'aller les détruire, les Romains l'avaient appris

9. When the men of Greece had planned to come and destroy them,

10. et avaient envoyé contre eux un seul général; ils leur avaient fait la guerre, en avaient tué un grand nombre, emmené en captivité leurs femmes et leurs enfants, pillé leurs biens, soumis leur pays, détruit leurs forte-resses et réduit les habitants en servi-tude jusqu'à ce jour.

10. the Romans discovered it, and sent against the Greeks a single general who made war on them. Many were wounded and fell, and the Romans took their wives and children captive. They plundered them, took possession of their land, tore down their strongholds and reduced them to slavery even to this day.

11. Tous les autres royaumes et les îles qui leur avaient résisté, ils les avaient détruits et assujettis.

11. All the other kingdoms and islands that had ever opposed them they destroyed and enslaved;

12. Mais à leurs amis et à ceux qui mettent en eux leur confiance, ils gar-dent amitié; ils se sont rendus maîtres des royaumes voisins et éloignés, et tous ceux qui entendent leur nom les redoutent.

12. with their friends, however, and those who relied on them, they maintained friendship. They had conquered kings both far and near, and all who heard of their fame were afraid of them.

13. Tous ceux à qui ils veulent prêter secours et conférer la royauté règnent, et ils ôtent le pouvoir à qui il leur plaît; c'est une nation très puissante.

13. In truth, those whom they desired to help to a kingdom became kings, and those whom they wished to depose they deposed; and they were greatly exalted.

14. Malgré tout cela nul d'entre eux ne ceint le diadème, nul ne se vêtit de pourpre pour se grandir ainsi.

14. Yet with all this, none of them put on a crown or wore purple as a display of grandeur.

15. Ils se sont formé un sénat, où délibèrent cha-que jour trois cent vingt membres s'oc-cupant constamment des intérêts du peu-ple, pour le rendre prospère.

15. They had made for themselves a senate house, and every day three hundred and twenty men took counsel, deliberating on all that concerned the people and their well-being.

16. Ils con-fient chaque année le pouvoir à un seul homme pour commander dans tout leur pays ; tous obéissent à ce seul homme, et il n'y a parmi eux ni envie, ni jalousie.

16. They entrusted their government to one man every year, to rule over their entire country, and they all obeyed that one, and there was no envy or jealousy among them.

17. Judas choisit Eupolème, fils de Jean, fils d'Accos, et Jason, fils d'Eléazar, et il les envoya à Rome pour faire avec eux amitié et alliance,

17. So Judas chose Eupolemus, son of John, son of Accos, and Jason, son of Eleazar, and sent them to Rome to establish an alliance of friendship with them.

18. et peut qu'ils les dé-livrassent du joug, car ils voyaient que le royaume des Grecs réduisait Israël en servitude.

18. He did this to get rid of the yoke, for it was obvious that the kingdom of the Greeks was subjecting Israel to slavery.

19. Ils se rendirent donc à Rome, et le voyage fut très long; et, étant entrés dans le sénat, il prirent la parole en ces termes :

19. After making a very long journey to Rome, the envoys entered the senate and spoke as follows:

20. "Judas Machabée, ses frères et le peuple juif nous ont envoyés vers vous pour conclure avec vous un traité d'alliance et de paix, et pour que nous soyons inscrits au nombre de vos alliés et de vos amis."

20. "Judas, called Maccabeus, and his brothers, with the Jewish people, have sent us to you to make a peaceful alliance with you, and to enroll ourselves among your allies and friends."

21. Cette requête fut accueillie favorablement;

21. The proposal pleased the Romans,

22. et voici la copie du traité que les Romains gravèrent sur des tables d'airain, et envoyèrent à Jérusalem, pour y demeurer comme un monument de paix et d'alliance

22. and this is a copy of the reply they inscribed on bronze tablets and sent to Jerusalem, to remain there with the Jews as a record of peace and alliance:

23. "Prospérité aux Romains et à la nation juive sur mer et sur terre, à jamais ! Loin d'eux l'épée et l'ennemi!

23. "May it be well with the Romans and the Jewish nation at sea and on land forever; may sword and enemy be far from them.

24. S'il survient une guerre aux Romains d'abord, ou à l'un de leurs alliés dans toute l'étendue de leur empire,

24. But if war is first made on Rome, or any of its allies in any of their dominions,

25. la nation juive leur prêtera secours, selon que les circonstances le per-mettront, de tout coeur;

25. the Jewish nation will help them wholeheartedly, as the occasion shall demand;

26. ils ne donneront aux combattants et ne fourniront ni blé, ni armes, ni argent, ni vaisseaux. Telle est la volonté des Romains ; et les Juifs observeront leurs engagements sans rien recevoir.

26. and to those who wage war they shall not give nor provide grain, arms, money, or ships; this is Rome's decision. They shall fulfill their obligations without receiving any recompense.

27. De même, s'il survient une guerre à la nation juive d'abord, les Romains combattront avec eux de toute leur armé, selon que les circonstances le leur permettront,

27. In the same way, if war is made first on the Jewish nation, the Romans will help them willingly, as the occasion shall demand,

28. sans qu'il soit fourni aux troupes auxiliaires ni blé, ni armes, ni argent, ni vaisseaux. Telle est la vo-lonté de Rome; et ils observeront leurs engagements sans tromperie.

28. and to those who are attacking them there shall not be given grain, arms, money, or ships; this is Rome's decision. They shall fulfill their obligations without deception.

29. Telles sont les clauses du traité des Romains avec le peuple juif.

29. On these terms the Romans have made an agreement with the Jewish people.

30. Que si, dans la suite, les uns et les autres veulent y ajouter ou en retrancher, ils le feront à leur gré, et ce qui aura été ajouté ou retranché sera obligatoire."

30. But if both parties hereafter decide to add or take away anything, they shall do as they choose, and whatever they shall add or take away shall be valid.

31. "Au sujet des maux que le roi Démétrius leur a faits, nous lui avons écrit en ces termes : "Pourquoi fais-tu peser le joug sur les Juifs, qui sont nos amis et nos alliés?

31. "Moreover, concerning the wrongs that King Demetrius has done to them, we have written to him thus: 'Why have you made your yoke heavy upon our friends and allies the Jews?

32. Si donc ils t'accusent encore auprès de nous, nous soutiendrons leurs droits, et nous te combattrons sur mer et sur terre."

32. If they complain about you again, we will do them justice and make war on you by land and sea.'"
