Jó, 3

1. Enfim, Jó abriu a boca e amaldiçoou o dia de seu nascimento.

1. After this Job opened his mouth, and cursed his day,

2. Jó falou nestes termos:

2. and he said:

3. “Pereça o dia em que nasci e a noite em que foi dito: ‘Nasceu um menino!’.

3. Let the day perish wherein I was born, and the night in which it was said: A man child is conceived.

4. Que esse dia se torne em trevas! Que Deus, lá do alto, não se incomode com ele, que a luz não brilhe sobre ele!

4. Let that day be turned into darkness, let not God regard it from above, and let not the light shine upon it.

5. Que trevas e obscuridade se apoderem dele, que nuvens o envolvam, que eclipses o apavorem,

5. Let darkness, and the shadow of death cover it, let a mist overspread it, and let it be wrapped up in bitterness.

6. que a sombra o domine. Esse dia, que não seja contado entre os dias do ano, nem seja computado entre os meses!*

6. Let a darksome whirlwind seize upon that night, let it not be counted in the days of the year, nor numbered in the months.

7. Que seja estéril essa noite, que nenhum grito de alegria se faça ouvir nela.

7. Let that night be solitary, and not worthy of praise.

8. Que a amaldiçoem os que amaldiçoam o dia, aqueles que são hábeis para evocar Leviatã!*

8. Let them curse it who curse the day. who are ready to raise up a leviathan:

9. Que as estrelas de sua madrugada se obscureçam, em vão espere a luz e não veja abrirem-se as pálpebras da aurora.

9. Let the stars be darkened with the mist thereof: let it expect light and not see it, nor the rising of the dawning of the day:

10. Pois não me fechou as portas do ventre que me carregou para me poupar a vista do mal!

10. Because it shut not up the doors of the womb that bore me, nor took away evils from my eyes.

11. Por que não morri ainda no seio materno, ou pereci ao sair das entranhas?

11. Why did I not die in the womb, why did I not perish when I came out of the belly?

12. Por que dois joelhos me acolheram, e dois seios me amamentaram?

12. Why received upon the knees? why suckled at the breasts ?

13. Estaria agora deitado e em paz, dormiria e teria o repouso

13. For now I should have been asleep and still, and should have rest in my sleep.

14. com os reis, árbitros da terra, que constroem para si mausoléus;

14. With kings and consuls of the earth, who build themselves solitudes:

15. ou estaria entre os príncipes que possuíam o ouro, e enchiam de dinheiro as suas casas.

15. Or with princes, that possess gold, and All their houses with silver:

16. Ou, então, como o aborto escondido, eu não teria existido, como as crianças que não viram a luz.*

16. Or as a hidden untimely birth I should not be, or as they that being conceived have not seen the light.

17. Ali, os ímpios cessam os seus furores, ali, repousam os exaustos de forças.*

17. There the wicked cease from tumult, and there the wearied in strength are at rest.

18. Ali, os prisioneiros estão tranquilos, já não mais ouvem a voz do capataz.

18. And they sometime bound together without disquiet, have not heard the voice of the oppressor.

19. Ali, juntos, os pequenos e os grandes se encontram, o escravo ali está livre do jugo do seu senhor.

19. The small and great are there, and the servant is free from his master.

20. Por que concede ele a luz aos infelizes e a vida àqueles cuja alma está desconsolada,

20. Why is light given to him that is in misery, and life to them that are in bitterness of soul?

21. que esperam pela morte sem que ela venha, e a procuram mais ardentemente do que um tesouro,

21. That look for death, and it cometh not, as they that dig for a treasure:

22. que se alegrariam intensamente diante do sepulcro?

22. And they rejoice exceedingly when they have found the grave.

23. Ao homem, cujo caminho está oculto, a quem Deus cerca de todos os lados?

23. To a man whose way is hidden, and God hath surrounded him with darkness?

24. Em lugar do pão tenho o soluço, e os meus gemidos se espalham como a água.

24. Before I eat I sigh: and as overflowing waters, so is my roaring:

25. Todos os meus temores se realizam, e aquilo que me dá medo vem atingir-me.

25. For the fear which I feared hath come upon me: and that which I was afraid of, hath befallen me.

26. Não tenho paz, nem descanso, nem repouso; o que vem é agitação”.

26. Have I not dissembled ? have I not kept silence ? have I not been quiet? and indignation is come upon me.
