1. Le Chananéen, roi d'Arad, qui habitait le Négeb, apprit qu'Israël venait par le chemin d'Atharim. Il livra bataille à Israël et lui fit des prisonniers.

1. When the Canaanite king of Arad, who lived in the Negeb, heard that the Israelites were coming along the way of Atharim, he engaged them in battle and took some of them captive.

2. Alors Israël fit un voeu à Yahweh, en disant: «Si vous livrez ce peuple entre mes mains, je dévouerai ses villes à l'anathème.»

2. Israel then made this vow to the LORD: "If you deliver this people into my hand, I will doom their cities."

3. Yahweh entendit la voix d'Israël et livra les Chananéens; on les dévoua à l'anathème, eux et leurs villes, et on nomma ce lieu Horma.

3. Later, when the LORD heeded Israel's prayer and delivered up the Canaanites, they doomed them and their cities. Hence that place was named Hormah.

4. Ils partirent de la montagne de Hor par le chemin de la mer Rouge, pour tourner le pays d'Edom. Le peuple perdit patience dans ce chemin, et il parla contre Dieu et contre Moïse:

4. From Mount Hor they set out on the Red Sea road, to by-pass the land of Edom. But with their patience worn out by the journey,

5. «Pourquoi nous avez-vous fait monter d'Egypte, pour que nous mourions dans le désert? Il n'y a point de pain, il n'y a point d'eau, et notre âme a pris en dégoût cette misérable nourriture.»

5. the people complained against God and Moses, "Why have you brought us up from Egypt to die in this desert, where there is no food or water? We are disgusted with this wretched food!"

6. Alors Yahweh envoya contre le peuple les serpents brûlants; ils mordirent le peuple, et il mourrut beaucoup de gens en Israël.

6. In punishment the LORD sent among the people saraph serpents, which bit the people so that many of them died.

7. Le peuple vint à Moïse et dit: «Nous avons péché, car nous avons parlé contre Yahweh et contre toi. Prie Yahweh, afin qu'il éloigne de nous ces serpents.» Moïse pria pour le peuple.

7. Then the people came to Moses and said, "We have sinned in complaining against the LORD and you. Pray the LORD to take the serpents from us." So Moses prayed for the people,

8. Et Yahweh dit à Moïse: «Fais-toi un serpent brûlant et place-le sur un poteau; quiconque aura été mordu et le regardera, conservera la vie.»

8. and the LORD said to Moses, "Make a saraph and mount it on a pole, and if anyone who has been bitten looks at it, he will recover."

9. Moïse fit un serpent d'airain et le plaça sur un poteau, et, si quelqu'un était mordu par un serpent, il regardait le serpent d'airain, et il vivait.

9. Moses accordingly made a bronze serpent and mounted it on a pole, and whenever anyone who had been bitten by a serpent looked at the bronze serpent, he recovered.

10. Les enfants d'Israël partirent, et ils campèrent à Oboth.

10. The Israelites moved on and encamped in Oboth.

11. Ils partirent d'Oboth, et ils campèrent à Jeabarim, dans le désert qui est vis-à-vis de Moab, vers le soleil levant.

11. Setting out from Oboth, they encamped in Iye-abarim in the desert fronting Moab on the east.

12. Ils partirent de là, et campèrent dans la vallée de Zared.

12. Setting out from there, they encamped in the Wadi Zered.

13. Ils partirent de là, et campèrent au-delà de l'Arnon, qui coule dans le désert, en sortant du terrictoire des Amorrhéens; car l'arnon est la frontière de Moab, entre Moab et les Amorrhéens.

13. Setting out from there, they encamped on the other side of the Arnon, in the desert that extends from the territory of the Amorites; for the Arnon forms Moab's boundary with the Amorites.

14. C'est pourquoi il est dit dans le livre des Guerres de Yahweh: «Yahweh a pris Vaheb, dans sa course impétueuse, et les torrents de l'Arnon,

14. Hence it is said in the "Book of the Wars of the LORD": "Waheb in Suphah and the wadies,

15. et la pente des torrents qui s'étend vers le site d'Ar et s'appuie à la frontière de Moab.»

15. Arnon and the wadi gorges That reach back toward the site of Ar and slant to the border of Moab."

16. De là ils allèrent à Beer. C'est le puits à propos duquel Yahweh dit à Moïse «Rassemble le peuple, et je leur donnerai de l'eau.»

16. From there they went to Beer, where there was the well of which the LORD said to Moses, "Bring the people together, and I will give them water."

17. Alors Israël chanta ce cantique:

17. Then it was that Israel sang this song: "Spring up, O well!--so sing to it--

18. Le puits, que des princes ont creusé, que les grands du peuple ont ouvert, avec le sceptre, avec leurs bâtons!

18. The well that the princes sank, that the nobles of the people dug, with their scepters and their staffs." From Beer they went to Mattanah,

19. from Mattanah to Nahaliel, from Nahaliel to Bamoth,

20. Bamoth; de Bamoth, à la vallée qui est dans les champs de Moab, au sommet du Phasga, qui domine le désert.

20. from Bamoth to the cleft in the plateau of Moab at the headland of Pisgah that overlooks Jeshimon.

21. Israël envoya des messagers à Séhon, roi des Amorrhéens, pour lui dire:

21. Now Israel sent men to Sihon, king of the Amorites, with the message,

22. «Laisse-moi passer par ton pays; nous ne nous écarterons ni dans les champs, ni dans les vignes, et nous ne boirons pas l'eau des puits; nous suivrons la route royale, jusqu'à ce que nous ayons franchi ton terrictoire.»

22. "Let us pass through your country. We will not turn aside into any field or vineyard, nor will we drink any well water, but we will go straight along the royal road until we have passed through your territory."

23. Séhon ne permit pas à Israël de passer sur son terrictoire; il rassembla tout son peuple et, étant sorti à la rencontre d'Israël dans le désert, il vint à Jasa et livra bataille à Israël.

23. Sihon, however, would not let Israel pass through his territory, but mustered all his forces and advanced into the desert against Israel. When he reached Jahaz, he engaged Israel in battle.

24. Israël le frappa du tranchant de l'épée, et se rendit maître de son pays depuis l'Arnon jusqu'à Jaboc, jusqu'aux enfants d'Ammon; car la frontière des enfants d'Ammon était forte.

24. But Israel defeated him at the point of the sword, and took possession of his land from the Arnon to the Jabbok and as far as the country of the Ammonites, whose boundary was at Jazer.

25. Israël prit toutes ces villes et Israël s'établit dans toutes les villes, des Amorrhéens, à Hésebon et dans toutes les villes de son ressort.

25. Israel seized all the towns here and settled in these towns of the Amorites, in Heshbon and all its dependencies.

26. Car Hésebon était la ville de Séhon, roi des Amorrhéens, qui avait fait la guerre au précédent roi de Moab et lui avait enlevé

26. Now Heshbon was the capital of Sihon, king of the Amorites, who had fought against the former king of Moab and had seized all his land from Jazer to the Arnon.

27. tout son pays jusqu'à l'Arnon. C'est pourquoi les poètes disent: Venez à Hésebon! Que la ville de Séhon soit rebâtie et fortifiée!

27. That is why the poets say: "Come to Heshbon, let it be rebuilt, let Sihon's capital be firmly constructed.

28. Car il est sorti un feu de Hésebon, une flamme de la ville de Séhon; elle a dévoré Ar-Moab. Les maîtres des hauteurs de l'Arnon.

28. For fire went forth from Heshbon and a blaze from the city of Sihon; It consumed the cities of Moab and swallowed up the high places of the Arnon.

29. Malheur à toi, Moab! Tu es perdu, peuple de Chamos! Il a livré ses fils fugitifs et ses filles captives à Séhon, roi des Amorrhéens.

29. Woe to you, O Moab! You are ruined, O people of Chemosh! He let his sons become fugitives and his daughters be taken captive by the Amorite king Sihon.

30. Et nous avons lancé sur eux nos traits; Hésebon est détruite jusqu'à Dibon; nous avons dévasté jusqu'à Nophé, avec le feu jusqu'à Médaba.

30. Their plowland is ruined from Heshbon to Dibon; Ar is laid waste; fires blaze as far as Medeba."

31. Israël s'établit dans le pays des Amorrhéens.

31. When Israel had settled in the land of the Amorites,

32. Moïse envoya reconnaître Jaser; et ils prirent les villes de son ressort, et expulsèrent les Amorrhéens qui y étaient.

32. Moses sent spies to Jazer; Israel then captured it with its dependencies and dispossessed the Amorites who were there.

33. Puis, changeant de direction, ils montèrent par le chemin de Basan. Og, roi de Basan, sortit à leur rencontre, avec tout son peuple, pour les combrattre à Edraï.

33. Then they turned and went up along the road to Bashan. But Og, king of Bashan, advanced against them with all his people to give battle at Edrei.

34. Yahweh dit à Moïse: «Ne le crains point, car je le livre entre tes mains, lui, tout son peuple et son pays; tu le traiteras comme tu as traité Séhon, roi des Amorrhéens, qui habitait à Hésebon.»

34. The LORD, however, said to Moses, "Do not be afraid of him; for into your hand I will deliver him with all his people and his land. Do to him as you did to Sihon, king of the Amorites, who lived in Heshbon."

35. Et ils le battirent, lui et ses fils,et tout son peuple, jusqu'à ne pas lui laisser de survivant, et ils s'emparèrent de son pays.

35. So they struck him down with his sons and all his people, until not a survivor was left to him, and they took possession of his land.
