Esdras, 10

1. Pendant qu'Esdras, pleurant et prosterné devant la maison de Dieu, faisait cette prière et cette confession, il s'était réuni auprès de lui une assemblée très nombreuse d'Israélites, hommes, femmes et enfants ; car le peuple versait beau-coup de larmes.

1. While Ezra prayed and acknowledged their guilt, weeping and prostrate before the house of God, a very large assembly of Israelites gathered about him, men, women, and children; and the people wept profusely.

2. Alors Séchénias, fils de Jéhiel, d'entre les fils d'Elam, prit la parole et dit à Esdras : "Nous avons péché contre notre Dieu en établissant chez nous des femmes étrangères, appar-tenant à la population du pays. Et main-tenant, il reste à cet égard à Israël une espérance.

2. Then Shecaniah, the son of Jehiel, one of the sons of Elam, made this appeal to Ezra: "We have indeed betrayed our God by taking as wives foreign women of the peoples of the land. Yet even now there remains a hope for Israel.

3. Concluons maintenant une alliance avec notre Dieu, en vue de ren-voyer toutes les femmes et les enfants issus d'elles, selon le conseil de mon seigneur et de ceux qui craignent devant les commandements de notre Dieu. Et qu'il soit fait selon la Loi.

3. Let us therefore enter into a covenant before our God to dismiss all our foreign wives and the children born of them, in keeping with what you, my lord, advise, and those who fear the commandments of our God. Let the law be observed!

4. Lève-toi, car c'est à toi de prendre en main cette affaire. Nous serons avec toi. Courage, et à l'oeuvre !"

4. Rise, then, for this is your duty! We will stand by you, so have courage and take action!"

5. Esdras se leva, et il fit jurer aux chefs des prêtres, des lévites et de tout Israël, de faire comme il venait d'être dit ; et ils le jurèrent.

5. Ezra rose to his feet and demanded an oath from the chiefs of the priests, from the Levites and from all Israel that they would do as had been proposed; and they swore it.

6. Puis, s'étant retiré de de-vant la maison de Dieu, Esdras alla dans la chambre de Johanan, fils d'Elia-sib ; quand il y fut entré, il ne mangea pas de pain et ne but pas d'eau, parce qu'il était dans le deuil à cause du péché des fils de la captivité.

6. Then Ezra retired from his place before the house of God and entered the chamber of Johanan, son of Eliashib, where he spent the night neither eating food nor drinking water, for he was in mourning over the betrayal by the exiles.

7. On fit passer une proclamation dans Juda et à Jérusalem, pour que tous les fils de la captivité se réunissent à Jérusalem;

7. A proclamation was made throughout Judah and Jerusalem that all the exiles should gather together in Jerusalem,

8. et, d'après l'avis des chefs et des anciens, quiconque n'y serait pas arrivé dans trois jours, aurait tous ses biens confisqués et serait lui-même ex-clu de l'assemblée des fils de la captivité.

8. and that whoever failed to appear within three days would, according to the judgment of the leaders and elders, suffer the confiscation of all his possessions, and himself be excluded from the assembly of the exiles.

9. Tous les hommes de Juda et de Benja-min se rassemblèrent à Jérusalem dans les trois jours; c'était le vingtième jour du neuvième mois. Tout le peuple se tenait sur la place de la maison de Dieu, tremblant à cause de la circonstance, et parce qu'il pleuvait.

9. All the men of Judah and Benjamin gathered together in Jerusalem within the three-day period: it was in the ninth month, on the twentieth day of the month. All the people, standing in the open place before the house of God, were trembling both over the matter at hand and because it was raining.

10. Esdras, le prêtre, se leva et leur dit : "Vous avez péché en établissant chez vous des femmes étrangères, ajoutant ainsi à la faute d'Israël.

10. Then Ezra, the priest, stood up and said to them: "Your unfaithfulness in taking foreign women as wives has added to Israel's guilt.

11. Et maintenant, confessez votre faute à Yahweh, le Dieu de vos pères, et faites sa volonté ; séparez-vous des peuples du pays et des femmes étrangères."

11. But now, give praise to the LORD, the God of your fathers, and do his will: separate yourselves from the peoples of the land and from these foreign women."

12. Toute l'assemblée répondit, en disant d'une voix haute : "A nous d'agir comme tu l'as dit !

12. In answer, the whole assembly cried out with a loud voice: "Yes, it is our duty to do as you say!

13. Mais le peuple est nombreux, et c'est le temps des pluies, et il n'est pas possible de rester dehors ; d'ail-leurs, ce n'est pas l'affaire d'un jour ou deux, car nous avons commis un grave péché en cette matière.

13. But the people are numerous and it is the rainy season, so that we cannot remain out-of-doors; besides, this is not a task that can be performed in a single day or even two, for those of us who have sinned in this regard are many.

14. Que nos chefs restent donc pour toute l'assemblée; et que tous ceux qui, dans nos villes, ont établi chez eux des femmes étrangères, viennent aux jours qui leur seront fixés, avec les anciens de chaque ville et ses juges, jusqu'à ce qu'on ait détourné de nous le feu de la colère de notre Dieu au sujet de cette affaire."

14. Let our leaders represent the whole assembly; then let all those in our cities who have taken foreign women for wives appear at appointed times, accompanied by the elders and magistrates of each city in question, till we have turned away from us our God's burning anger over this affair."

15. II n'y eut que Jonathan, fils d'Azahel, et Jaasias, fils de Thécuah, pour combattre cet avis; et Mosollam et Sebéthaï, le lévite, les appuyèrent.

15. Only Jonathan, son of Asahel, and Jahzeiah, son of Tikvah, were against this proposal, with Meshullam and Shabbethai the Levite supporting them.

16. Mais les fils de la captivité firent comme il avait été dit. Esdras, le prêtre, et des hommes, chefs de familles selon leurs maisons, tous désignés par leurs noms, se mirent à part et siégèrent le pre-mier jour du dixième mois pour examiner l'affaire.

16. The exiles did as agreed. Ezra appointed as his assistants men who were family heads, one for each family, all of them designated by name. They held sessions to examine the matter, beginning with the first day of the tenth month.

17. Ils en eurent fini le premier jour du premier mois avec tous les hommes qui avaient établi chez eux des femmes étran-gères.

17. By the first day of the first month they had passed judgment on all the men who had taken foreign women for wives.

18. Parmi les fils des prêtres, il s'en trouva qui avaient établi chez eux des femmes étrangères, savoir : des fils de Josué, fils de Josédec, et de ses frères : Maasias, Eliézer, Jarib et Godolias ;

18. Among the priests, the following were found to have taken foreign women for wives: Of the sons of Jeshua, son of Jozadak, and his brethren: Maaseiah, Eliezer, Jarib, and Gedaliah.

19. ils donnèrent parole de renvoyer leurs femmes et, se déclarant coupables, d'offrir un bélier pour l'expiation de leur faute.

19. They pledged themselves to dismiss their wives, and as a guilt-offering for their guilt they gave a ram from the flock.

20. Des fils d'Emmer : Hanani et Zébédias.

20. Of the sons of Immer: Hanani and Zebadiah;

21. Des fils de Harim : Maasias, Elie, Séméïas, Jéhiel et Ozias.

21. of the sons of Harim: Maaseiah, Elijah, Shemaiah, Jehiel, and Uzziah;

22. Des fils de Phashur : Elioénaï, Maasias, Ismaël, Nathanaël, Jozabed et Elasa.

22. of the sons of Pashhur: Elioenai, Maaseiah, Ishmael, Nethanel, Jozabad, and Elasah.

23. Of the Levites: Jozabad, Shimei, Kelaiah (also called Kelita), Pethahiah, Judah and Eliezer.

24. -- Parmi les portiers : Selum, Télem et Uri.

24. Of the singers: Eliashib and Zakkur; of the gatekeepers: Shallum, Telem, and Uri.

25. Among the other Israelites: Of the sons of Parosh: Ramiah, Izziah, Malchijah, Mijamin, Eleazar, Malchijah, and Benaiah;

26. Des fils d'Elam : Mathanias, Zacharie, Jéhiel, Abdi, Jérimoth et Elie;

26. of the sons of Elam: Mattaniah, Zechariah, Jehiel, Abdi, Jeremoth, and Elijah;

43. of the sons of Nebo: Jeiel, Mattithiah, Zabad, Zebina, Jaddai, Joel, Benaiah.

44. Tous ces hommes avaient pris des femmes étrangères, et plusieurs d'entre eux en avaient eu des enfants.

44. All these had taken foreign wives; but they sent them away, both the women and their children.
