1 Maccabées, 2

1. En ces jours-là parut Mathathias, fils de Jean, fils de Siméon, prêtre d'entre les fils de Joarib de Jérusalem, qui habi-tait Modin.

1. In those days Mattathias, son of John, son of Simeon, a priest of the family of Joarib, left Jerusalem and settled in Modein.

2. Il avait cinq fils : Jean, surnommé Gaddis; Simon, appelé Tha-si;

2. He had five sons: John, who was called Gaddi;

3. Simon, who was called Thassi;

4. Judas, surnommé Machabée;

4. Judas, who was called Maccabeus;

5. Eléa-zar, surnommé Abaron, et Jonathas, surnommé Apphus.

5. Eleazar, who was called Avaran; and Jonathan, who was called Apphus.

6. Voyant les outrages qui se commettaient en Juda et en Jérusa-lem, Mathathias dit :

6. When he saw the sacrileges that were being committed in Judah and in Jerusalem,

7. "Hélas ! pour-quoi suis-je né pour voir la ruine de mon peuple et la ruine de la ville sainte, et rester là oisif pendant qu'elle est livrée aux mains des ennemis,

7. he said: "Woe is me! Why was I born to see the ruin of my people and the ruin of the holy city, and to sit idle while it is given into the hands of enemies, and the sanctuary into the hands of strangers?

8. et que son sanc-tuaire est au pouvoir des étrangers? Son temple est devenu comme la demeure d'un homme infâme ;

8. "Her temple has become like a man disgraced,

9. les objets précieux qui faisaient sa gloire, on les a emportés comme un butin ; ses petits enfants ont été massacrés dans ses rues; l'épée de l'ennemi a abattu ses jeunes hommes.

9. her glorious ornaments have been carried off as spoils, Her infants have been murdered in her streets, her young men by the sword of the enemy.

10. Quel peuple n'a pas hérité de son royau-me, et n'a pas eu sa part de ses dépouilles?

10. What nation has not taken its share of her realm, and laid its hand on her possessions?

11. On lui a enlevé toute sa parure; de libre, elle est devenue esclave.

11. All her adornment has been taken away. From being free, she has become a slave.

12. Tout ce que nous avions de saint, de beau et de glorieux est ravagé, profané par les nations.

12. We see our sanctuary and our beauty and our glory laid waste, And the Gentiles have defiled them!

13. Pourquoi donc vivrions-nous en-core?"

13. Why are we still alive?"

14. Alors Mathathias et ses fils déchirèrent leurs vêtements, se couvrirent de sacs et menèrent grand deuil.

14. Then Mattathias and his sons tore their garments, put on sackcloth, and mourned bitterly.

15. Les officiers du roi chargés de contrain-dre à l'apostasie vinrent à Modin pour organiser des sacrifices.

15. The officers of the king in charge of enforcing the apostasy came to the city of Modein to organize the sacrifices.

16. Un grand nom-bre d'Israélites se joignirent à eux; Ma-thathias et ses fils se réunirent aussi de leur côté.

16. Many of Israel joined them, but Mattathias and his sons gathered in a group apart.

17. Les envoyés d'Antiochus, s'adressant à Mathathias, lui dirent : "Tu es le premier dans cette ville, le plus grand par la considération et l'influence, et entouré de fils et de frères.

17. Then the officers of the king addressed Mattathias: "You are a leader, an honorable and great man in this city, supported by sons and kinsmen.

18. Approche donc le premier et exécute le commandement du roi, comme ont fait toutes les nations, les hommes de Juda et ceux qui sont restés dans Jérusalem, et tu seras, toi et les tiens, parmi les amis du roi; toi et tes fils, vous aurez des ornements d'or et d'argent et des présents nombreux."

18. Come now, be the first to obey the king's command, as all the Gentiles and the men of Judah and those who are left in Jerusalem have done. Then you and your sons shall be numbered among the King's Friends, and shall be enriched with silver and gold and many gifts."

19. Mathathias répondit et dit à haute voix: "Quand toutes les nations qui font par-tie du royaume d'Antiochus lui obéi-raient, chacune abandonnant le culte de ses pères, et se soumettraient volontiers à ses ordres,

19. But Mattathias answered in a loud voice: "Although all the Gentiles in the king's realm obey him, so that each forsakes the religion of his fathers and consents to the king's orders,

20. moi, mes fils et mes frères, nous suivrons l'alliance de nos pères.

20. yet I and my sons and my kinsmen will keep to the covenant of our fathers.

21. Que Dieu nous garde d'abandonner la loi et ses préceptes!

21. God forbid that we should forsake the law and the commandments.

22. Nous n'obéirons pas aux ordres du roi pour nous écarter de notre culte, soit à droite soit à gauche."

22. We will not obey the words of the king nor depart from our religion in the slightest degree."

23. Dès qu'il eut achevé ce discours, un Juif s'avança aux yeux de tous pour sacrifier, selon l'ordre du roi, sur l'autel élevé à Modin.

23. As he finished saying these words, a certain Jew came forward in the sight of all to offer sacrifice on the altar in Modein according to the king's order.

24. A cette vue, Mathathias fut indigné et ses reins s'émurent; il laissa monter sa colère selon la loi et, se précipitant, il tua cet homme sur l'autel.

24. When Mattathias saw him, he was filled with zeal; his heart was moved and his just fury was aroused; he sprang forward and killed him upon the altar.

25. Il tua en même temps l'officier du roi qui forçait à sacrifier, et renversa l'au-tel.

25. At the same time, he also killed the messenger of the king who was forcing them to sacrifice, and he tore down the altar.

26. C'est ainsi qu'il fut transporté de zèle pour la loi, à l'exemple de Phinées, qui tua Zambri, fils de Salum.

26. Thus he showed his zeal for the law, just as Phinehas did with Zimri, son of Salu.

27. Alors Mathathias parcourut la ville en criant à haute voix : "Quiconque a le zèle de la loi et maintient l'alliance, qu'il sorte de la ville et nie suive!"

27. Then Mattathias went through the city shouting, "Let everyone who is zealous for the law and who stands by the covenant follow after me!"

28. Et il s'enfuit, lui et ses fils, dans la montagne, abandonnant tout ce qu'ils possédaient dans la ville.

28. Thereupon he fled to the mountains with his sons, leaving behind in the city all their possessions.

29. Un grand nombre de Juifs qui cherchaient la justice et la loi, des-cendirent alors dans le désert,

29. Many who sought to live according to righteousness and religious custom went out into the desert to settle there,

30. pour y demeurer, eux, leurs enfants et leurs femmes, ainsi que leurs bestiaux, parce que les maux qui les accablaient étaient à leur comble.

30. they and their sons, their wives and their cattle, because misfortunes pressed so hard on them.

31. On annonça aux officiers du roi et aux troupes qui étaient à Jérusalem, dans la cité de David, que des hommes qui avaient transgressé l'ordre du roi étaient descendus au désert, dans des retraites cachées.

31. It was reported to the officers and soldiers of the king who were in the City of David, in Jerusalem, that certain men who had flouted the king's order had gone out to the hiding places in the desert.

32. Aussitôt un grand nombre de soldats se mirent à leur poursuite. Lorsqu'ils les eurent atteints, ils compétent vis-à-vis d'eux et se dispo-sèrent à les attaquer le jour du sabbat.

32. Many hurried out after them, and having caught up with them, camped opposite and prepared to attack them on the sabbath.

33. Ils leur dirent : "C'est assez d'avoir résisté jusqu'ici. Sortez et exécutez l'or-dre du roi, et vous vivrez!"

33. "Enough of this!" the pursuers said to them. "Come out and obey the king's command, and your lives will be spared."

34. Les Juifs répondirent : "Nous ne sortirons point et nous n'obéirons point à l'ordre du roi ; ce serait violer le jour du sabbat."

34. But they replied, "We will not come out, nor will we obey the king's command to profane the sabbath."

35. Aussitôt les Syriens engagèrent contre eux le combat.

35. Then the enemy attacked them at once;

36. Ils ne leur répondirent pas, ne leur jetèrent pas une seule pierre et ne bouchèrent pas leur retraite.

36. but they did not retaliate; they neither threw stones, nor blocked up their own hiding places.

37. "Mou-rons tous, disaient-ils, dans la simplicité de notre coeur! Le ciel et la terre sont témoins pour nous que vous nous faites mourir injustement."

37. They said, "Let us all die without reproach; heaven and earth are our witnesses that you destroy us unjustly."

38. Les soldats les ayant donc attaqués le jour du sabbat, ils moururent, eux, leurs femmes et leurs enfants, ainsi que leurs troupeaux; ils étaient environ mille hommes.

38. So the officers and soldiers attacked them on the sabbath, and they died with their wives, their children and their cattle, to the number of a thousand persons.

39. Mathathias et ses amis apprirent ce massacre, et ils en éprouvèrent une très grande douleur.

39. When Mattathias and his friends heard of it, they mourned deeply for them.

40. Et ils se dirent entre eux : "Si nous faisons tous comme ont fait nos frères, et que nous ne combat-tions pas contre les nations pour nos vies et pour nos institutions, ils nous auront bientôt exterminés de la terre."

40. "If we all do as our kinsmen have done," they said to one another, "and do not fight against the Gentiles for our lives and our traditions, they will soon destroy us from the earth."

41. Ils prirent donc en ce jour là cette résolu-tion: "Qui que ce soit qui vienne en guerre contre nous le jour du sabbat, combat-tons contre lui, et ne nous laissons pas tuer comme ont fait nos frères dans leurs retraites."

41. On that day they came to this decision: "Let us fight against anyone who attacks us on the sabbath, so that we may not all die as our kinsmen died in the hiding places."

42. Alors se joignit à eux une troupe d'Assidéens, fermée d'hommes vaillants d'Israël, de tous ceux dont le coeur était attaché à la loi.

42. Then they were joined by a group of Hasideans, valiant Israelites, all of them devout followers of the law.

43. Tous ceux qui cherchaient à échapper aux maux présents vinrent aussi à eux et accrurent leur force.

43. And all those who were fleeing from the disaster joined them and supported them.

44. Ayant ainsi formé une ar-mée, ils frappèrent d'abord les prévarica-teurs dans leur colère et les impies dans leur indignation ; le reste chercha le salut dans la fuite auprès des nations.

44. They gathered an army and struck down sinners in their anger and lawbreakers in their wrath, and the survivors fled to the Gentiles for safety.

45. Mathathias parcourut le pays avec ses fils ; ils détruisirent les au-tels,

45. Mattathias and his friends went about and tore down the pagan altars;

46. circoncirent par force tous les en-fants incirconcis qu'ils trouvèrent dans la terre d'Israël,

46. they also enforced circumcision for any uncircumcised boys whom they found in the territory of Israel.

47. et poursuivirent ceux qu'enflait l'orgueil.

47. They put to flight the arrogant, and the work prospered in their hands.

48. L'entreprise réussit sous leur conduite; ils soutinrent la cause de la loi contre la puissance des païens et contre la puissance des rois, et ils ne courbèrent pas le front devant le pécheur.

48. They saved the law from the hands of the Gentiles and of the kings and did not let the sinner triumph.

49. Lorsque les jours de Mathathias touchèrent à leur fin, il dit à ses fils: "Main-tenant règne l'orgueil et sévit le châti-ment; c'est un temps de ruine et d'ar-dente colère.

49. When the time came for Mattathias to die, he said to his sons: "Arrogance and scorn have now grown strong; it is a time of disaster and violent anger.

50. Maintenant donc, ô mes fils, déployez votre zèle pour la loi et donnez vos vies pour l'alliance de nos pères.

50. Therefore, my sons, be zealous for the law and give your lives for the covenant of our fathers.

51. Souvenez-vous des oeuvres que nos pères ont accomplies de leur temps, et vous recevrez une gloire et un nom Immortel.

51. "Remember the deeds that our fathers did in their times, and you shall win great glory and an everlasting name.

52. Abraham n'a-t-il pas été trouvé fidèle dans l'épreuve, et sa loi ne lui a-t-elle pas été imputée à justice?

52. Was not Abraham found faithful in trial, and it was reputed to him as uprightness?

53. Joseph, dans le temps de son affliction, a gardé les commandements, et il est devenu seigneur de l'Egypte.

53. Joseph, when in distress, kept the commandment, and he became master of Egypt.

54. Phinées, notre père, parce qu'il brûla de zèle pour la cause de Dieu, reçut l'assurance d'un sacerdoce saint.

54. Phinehas our father, for his burning zeal, received the covenant of an everlasting priesthood.

55. Jésus, pour avoir accompli la parole, est devenu juge en Israël.

55. Joshua, for executing his commission, became a judge in Israel.

56. Caleb. pour avoir rendu témoignage dans l'assemblée, reçut une por-tion du pays.

56. Caleb, for bearing witness before the assembly, received an inheritance in the land.

57. David, par sa piété, obtint un trône royal pour tous les siècles.

57. David, for his piety, received as a heritage a throne of everlasting royalty.

58. Elie, parce qu'il brûla de zèle pour la loi, a été enlevé au ciel.

58. Elijah, for his burning zeal for the law, was taken up to heaven.

59. Ananias, Azarias et Misaël, ayant eu confiance, ont été sauvés des flammes.

59. Hananiah, Azariah and Mishael, for their faith, were saved from the fire.

60. Daniel, par son innocence, fut délivré de la gueule des lions.

60. Daniel, for his innocence, was delivered from the jaws of lions.

61. Ainsi considérez, dans tous les âges, que tous ceux qui espèrent en Lui ne succombent point.

61. And so, consider this from generation to generation, that none who hope in him shall fail in strength.

62. Ne craignez point les menaces d'un homme pécheur, car sa gloire va à la corruption et aux vers.

62. Do not fear the words of a sinful man, for his glory ends in corruption and worms.

63. Il s'élève aujourd'hui, et demain on ne le trouvera plus, parce qu'il sera retourné dans sa poussière et que ses pensées se seront évanouies.

63. Today he is exalted, and tomorrow he is not to be found, because he has returned to his dust, and his schemes have perished.

64. Vous donc, mes fils, soyez forts et vaillants à défendre la loi, car par elle vous serez glorifiés.

64. Children! be courageous and strong in keeping the law, for by it you shall be glorified.

65. Voici Simon, votre frère; je sais qu'il est homme de conseil, écoutez-le toujours, il sera pour vous un père.

65. "Here is your brother Simeon who I know is a wise man; listen to him always, and he will be a father to you.

66. Que Judas Machabée, vaillant héros depuis sa jeunesse, soit le chef de votre armée et di-rige la guerre contre les peuples.

66. And Judas Maccabeus, a warrior from his youth, shall be the leader of your army and direct the war against the nations.

67. Vous vous adjoindrez tous les observateurs de la loi et vous vengerez votre peuple.

67. You shall also gather about you all who observe the law, and you shall avenge the wrongs of your people.

68. Rendez aux nations ce qu'elles ont fait à Israël, et observez les commande-ments de la loi."

68. Pay back the Gentiles what they deserve, and observe the precepts of the law."

69. Et après qu'il les eut bénis, il fut réuni à ses pères.

69. Then he blessed them, and he was united with his fathers.

70. Il mourut l'an cent quarante-six; ses fils l'ensevelirent dans le tom-beau de leurs pères à Modin, et Israël le pleura dans un grand deuil.

70. He died in the year one hundred and forty-six, and was buried in the tombs of his fathers in Modein, and all Israel mourned him greatly.
