2 Samuel, 3

23. And Joab, and the entire army that was with him, had arrived afterward. And so, it was reported to Joab, explaining that Abner, the son of Ner, went to the king, and he dismissed him, and he went away in peace.

Chapter 3 of 2 Samuel describes the long struggle between Saul's house and David's house for Israel's control. Abner, the commander of Saul's army, refuses to submit to David after Saul's death, and chooses a new king to Israel, Is-Boste, son of Saul. However, the war between the two houses continues, and Abner is eventually killed by Joab, the commander of the Army of David.

2 Samuel 3:27 - "When Abner returned to Hebron, Joabe took him to the middle of the door, as if he wanted to talk to him in particular, and there injured him in his belly.
