Ester, 10

1. O rei Assuero impôs um tributo sobre o continente e sobre as ilhas do mar.

1. And king Assuerus made all the land, and all the islands of the sea tributary.

2. Tudo o que concerne a seu poder e suas façanhas e os detalhes sobre a elevação de Mardoqueu pelo rei estão escritos no Livro das Crônicas dos reis dos medos e dos persas.

2. And his strength and his empire, and the dignity and greatness wherewith he exalted Mardochai, are written in the books of the Medes, and of the Persians:

3. Porque o judeu Mardoqueu era o primeiro depois do rei Assuero. Ele gozava de grande consideração entre os judeus e era amado pela multidão de seus irmãos. Procurava o bem de seu povo e falava a favor da felicidade de toda a sua nação. Traduzi com toda a fidelidade o que se acha no texto hebraico. As passagens que seguem encontrei-as apenas na edição “vulgata” (isto é, “divulgada”) em língua e caracteres gregos e as coloquei aqui no fim do livro, marcadas – como é nosso costume – com o óbelo, quero dizer, o sinal distintivo à margem:

3. And how Mardochai of the race of the Jews, was next after king Assuerus: and great among the Jews, and acceptable to the people of his brethren, seeking the good of his people, and speaking those things which were for the welfare of his seed.

4. E Mardoqueu disse: “De Deus veio tudo isso.

4. Then Mardochai said: God hath done these things.

5. Lembro-me de um sonho que tive a esse respeito. Nada foi omitido:*

5. I remember a dream that I saw, which signified these same things: and nothing thereof hath failed.

6. a pequena fonte tornada um rio, a luz, o sol, a massa de água. O rio é Ester que o rei tomou por esposa e a quem tornou rainha.

6. The little fountain which grew into a river, and was turned into a light, and into the sun, and abounded into many waters, is Esther, whom the king married, and made queen.

7. Amã e eu – eis as duas serpentes.

7. But the two dragons are I and Aman.

8. Os povos são aqueles que se reuniram para destruir o nome dos judeus.

8. The nations that were assembled are they that endeavoured to destroy the name of the Jews.

9. Minha nação é Israel que invocou o Senhor e que foi salva; porque o Senhor salvou seu povo e nos livrou de todos esses males. Deus fez prodígios e maravilhas, como não fez semelhantes entre todas as nações.

9. And my nation is Israel, who cried to the Lord, and the Lord saved his people: and he delivered us from all evils, and hath wrought great signs and wonders among the nations:

10. Porque Deus preparou dois destinos: um para seu povo e outro para todas as nações.

10. And he commanded that there should be two lots, one of the people of God, and the other of all the nations.

11. E esses dois destinos se cumpriram na hora, no tempo e no dia marcados por Deus para todas as nações.

11. And both lots came to the day appointed already from that time before God to all nations:

12. Então, o Senhor lembrou-se dos seus e fez justiça à sua herança.

12. And the Lord remembered his people, and had mercy on his inheritance.

13. E esses dias do mês de Adar, o catorze e o quinze, serão celebrados em comum, pelo povo de Israel, com gozo e alegria diante de Deus em todas as gerações, para sempre.

13. And these days shall be observed in the month of Adar on the fourteenth, and fifteenth day of the same month. with all diligence, and joy of the people gathered into one assembly, throughout all the generations hereafter of the people of Israel.
