Deuteronomy 19 deals with the cities of refuge, which were places designated where someone who committed an intentional homicide could escape to protect themselves from the revenge of the victim's relatives. The three cities of refuge should be equitably distributed in the land of Israel. The chapter also instructs that no one should falsely witness against their neighbor, and that those who witness must be careful in their words and actions.
Proverbs 14:5: "The faithful witness will not lie, but the false witness will speak lies." This verse highlights the importance of the veracity of the testimony and the seriousness of witnessing falsely against another person.
Matthew 5:21-22: "You have heard that it has been said to the ancients, Thou shalt not kill; but whatever killing will be defendant of judgment. But I say unto you, who, for no reason, to be cried against his brother, will be defendant of judgment ; and whatever you say to your brother: Raca will be a defendant of the Sanhedrin; and whoever tells him: Crazy, he will be a defendant of hell of hell. " Jesus reiterates the importance of not killing, but also emphasizes the importance of controlling anger and being careful with the words that are said.
Exodus 23:7: "From words of falsehood thou shalt walk away, and shall not kill the innocent and the righteous; for I will not justify the wicked." This verse highlights the importance of avoiding falsehood and not unjustly killing.
Proverbs 19:5: "The false witness will not be unpunished, and what breathes lies will not escape." This verse highlights the consequence of false witness and lies, which is divine punishment.
Isaiah 1:17: "Learn to do well; seek what is just; help the oppressed; do justice to the orphan; deal with the cause of the widows." This verse emphasizes the importance of justice and treating vulnerable with kindness and compassion, themes that are related to the idea of cities of refuge in Deuteronomy 19.
