2 Samuel, 3

35. The people then all tried to persuade David to have some food while it was still daylight, but David swore this oath, 'May God bring unnameable ills on me, and worse ills, too, if I taste bread or anything whatever until the sun is down!'

Chapter 3 of 2 Samuel describes the long struggle between Saul's house and David's house for Israel's control. 2 Samuel 3:27 - "When Abner returned to Hebron, Joabe took him to the middle of the door, as if he wanted to talk to him in particular, and there injured him in his belly. And Abner died from the blood of Asael, brother of Joab. " This verse describes Abner's death in the hands of Joab, an important event in the struggle for power.

2 Samuel 3:37 - "All the people and all Israel understood that day that it had not been by the will of the king that Abner, son of Ner, had been dead." This verse shows that Abner's death was an act of Joab, not David.
