Amos, 5

1. Listen to this word which I utter against you, it is a dirge, House of Israel:

1. Hear this word which I take up over you in lamentation, O house of Israel:

2. She has fallen down, never to rise again, the virgin Israel. There she lies on her own soil, with no one to lift her up.

2. "Fallen, no more to rise, is the virgin Israel; forsaken on her land, with none to raise her up."

3. For Lord Yahweh says this: The town which used to put a thousand in the field will be left with a hundred, and the one which used to put a hundred will be left with ten, to fight for the House of Israel.

3. For thus says the Lord GOD: "The city that went forth a thousand shall have a hundred left, and that which went forth a hundred shall have ten left to the house of Israel."

4. For Yahweh says this to the House of Israel: Seek me out and you will survive,

4. For thus says the LORD to the house of Israel: "Seek me and live;

5. but do not seek out Bethel, do not go to Gilgal, do not journey to Beersheba, for Gilgal is going into captivity and Bethel will be brought to nothing.

5. but do not seek Bethel, and do not enter into Gilgal or cross over to Beer-sheba; for Gilgal shall surely go into exile, and Bethel shall come to nought."

6. Seek out Yahweh and you will survive or else he will sweep like fire upon the House of Joseph and burn it down, with no one at Bethel able to quench the flames.

6. Seek the LORD and live, lest he break out like fire in the house of Joseph, and it devour, with none to quench it for Bethel,

7. They turn justice into wormwood and throw uprightness to the ground.

7. O you who turn justice to wormwood, and cast down righteousness to the earth!

8. He it is who makes the Pleiades and Orion, who turns shadow dark as death into morning and day to darkest night, who summons the waters of the sea and pours them over the surface of the land. Yahweh is his name.

8. He who made the Plei'ades and Orion, and turns deep darkness into the morning, and darkens the day into night, who calls for the waters of the sea, and pours them out upon the surface of the earth, the LORD is his name,

9. He brings destruction on the strong and ruin comes on the fortress.

9. who makes destruction flash forth against the strong, so that destruction comes upon the fortress.

10. They hate the man who teaches justice at the city gate and detest anyone who declares the truth.

10. They hate him who reproves in the gate, and they abhor him who speaks the truth.

11. For trampling on the poor man and for extorting levies on his wheat: although you have built houses of dressed stone, you will not live in them; although you have planted pleasant vineyards, you will not drink wine from them:

11. Therefore because you trample upon the poor and take from him exactions of wheat, you have built houses of hewn stone, but you shall not dwell in them; you have planted pleasant vineyards, but you shall not drink their wine.

12. for I know how many your crimes are and how outrageous your sins, you oppressors of the upright, who hold people to ransom and thrust the poor aside at the gates.

12. For I know how many are your transgressions, and how great are your sins -- you who afflict the righteous, who take a bribe, and turn aside the needy in the gate.

13. That is why anyone prudent keeps silent now, since the time is evil.

13. Therefore he who is prudent will keep silent in such a time; for it is an evil time.

14. Seek good and not evil so that you may survive, and Yahweh, God Sabaoth, be with you as you claim he is.

14. Seek good, and not evil, that you may live; and so the LORD, the God of hosts, will be with you, as you have said.

15. Hate evil, love good, let justice reign at the city gate: it may be that Yahweh, God Sabaoth, will take pity on the remnant of Joseph.

15. Hate evil, and love good, and establish justice in the gate; it may be that the LORD, the God of hosts, will be gracious to the remnant of Joseph.

16. Therefore Yahweh Sabaoth, the Lord, says this: In every public square there will be lamentation, in every street they will cry out, 'Alas! Alas!' The farmer will be called on to mourn, the professional mourners to lament,

16. Therefore thus says the LORD, the God of hosts, the Lord: "In all the squares there shall be wailing; and in all the streets they shall say, 'Alas! alas!' They shall call the farmers to mourning and to wailing those who are skilled in lamentation,

17. and there will be wailing in every vineyard, for I mean to pass through among you, Yahweh says.

17. and in all vineyards there shall be wailing, for I will pass through the midst of you," says the LORD.

18. Disaster for you who long for the Day of Yahweh! What will the Day of Yahweh mean for you? It will mean darkness, not light,

18. Woe to you who desire the day of the LORD! Why would you have the day of the LORD? It is darkness, and not light;

19. as when someone runs away from a lion, only to meet a bear; he goes into his house and puts his hand on the wall, only for a snake to bite him.

19. as if a man fled from a lion, and a bear met him; or went into the house and leaned with his hand against the wall, and a serpent bit him.

20. Will not the Day of Yahweh be darkness, not light, totally dark, without a ray of light?

20. Is not the day of the LORD darkness, and not light, and gloom with no brightness in it?

21. I hate, I scorn your festivals, I take no pleasure in your solemn assemblies.

21. "I hate, I despise your feasts, and I take no delight in your solemn assemblies.

22. When you bring me burnt offerings . . . your oblations, I do not accept them and I do not look at your communion sacrifices of fat cattle.

22. Even though you offer me your burnt offerings and cereal offerings, I will not accept them, and the peace offerings of your fatted beasts I will not look upon.

23. Spare me the din of your chanting, let me hear none of your strumming on lyres,

23. Take away from me the noise of your songs; to the melody of your harps I will not listen.

24. but let justice flow like water, and uprightness like a never-failing stream!

24. But let justice roll down like waters, and righteousness like an ever-flowing stream.

25. Did you bring me sacrifices and oblations those forty years in the desert, House of Israel?

25. "Did you bring to me sacrifices and offerings the forty years in the wilderness, O house of Israel?

26. Now you must shoulder Sakkuth your king and the star of your God, Kaiwan, those idols you made for yourselves;

26. You shall take up Sakkuth your king, and Kaiwan your star-god, your images, which you made for yourselves;

27. for I am about to drive you into captivity beyond Damascus, Yahweh says -- God Sabaoth is his name.

27. therefore I will take you into exile beyond Damascus," says the LORD, whose name is the God of hosts.

5:1-3 - Amos déplore la chute d'Israël, déclarant que le pays connaîtra une grande lamentation, telle une vierge tombée en ruine. Cela révèle la sévérité du jugement de Dieu sur la nation et le manque de repentance du peuple (voir aussi Jérémie 9:17-21 et Ézéchiel 7:2-4).

5:4-6 - Amos appelle le peuple à rechercher le Seigneur pour la vie, car sans Dieu, il n'y a pas de vie. Cet appel à rechercher Dieu sincèrement est un point central en période de crise spirituelle, reflétant le désir de restauration (voir aussi Matthieu 6:33 et Jérémie 29:13-14).

5:7-13 - L'injustice et l'oppression sociale sont condamnées. Dieu n'accepte pas le culte rendu par ceux qui pratiquent l'injustice. Le véritable culte exige justice et responsabilité sociale, reflétant le lien entre vie morale et culte (voir aussi Ésaïe 1:10-17 et Jacques 1:27).

5:14-15 - Le prophète exhorte le peuple à rechercher le bien et à éviter le mal afin de vivre. La recherche du bien est étroitement liée à la repentance et au rétablissement d'une relation juste avec Dieu (voir aussi Romains 12:9 et Colossiens 3:12-14).

5:18-27 - Amos condamne le désir de beaucoup pour le Jour du Seigneur, car pour eux ce jour sera un jour de jugement, et non de salut. Une véritable attente du « Jour du Seigneur » exige sincérité et repentance, et non de faux espoirs fondés sur des rites (voir aussi Joël 2:1-2 et 1 Corinthiens 3:13-15).

Amos chapitre 5 alterne entre lamentation et exhortation. Quelle est la véritable adoration que Dieu désire ? Ce texte puissant commence par un chant funèbre pour Israël, suivi d’appels au repentir. Le chapitre critique le formalisme religieux vide et appelle à la justice sociale. Amos 5 inclut le célèbre appel à la justice pour qu’elle « coule comme une rivière ». Il t'a montré, ô homme, ce qui est bon et ce que le Seigneur exige : pratique la justice, aime la fidélité et marche humblement avec ton Dieu." - Ce passage reflète l'appel d'Amos à la vraie justice et à la droiture plutôt qu'à des rituels religieux vides de sens, comme on le voit dans Amos 5:21-24.

Ésaïe 5:20: "Malheur à ceux qui appellent le mal bien et le bien mal, qui font des ténèbres lumière et de la lumière ténèbres, amer doux et doux amer !" - Ce « malheur » d'Isaïe fait écho aux avertissements d'Amos dans Amos 5:7 contre ceux qui pervertissent la justice.

Jérémie 22:3: "Ainsi parle le Seigneur : Administrez la justice et la justice ; libérer les exploités des mains de l’oppresseur. N'opprimez pas et ne maltraitez pas l'étranger, l'orphelin ou la veuve ; ni verser du sang innocent en cet endroit." - Ce commandement de Jérémie s'aligne avec l'appel d'Amos à la justice sociale dans Amos 5:24.

Psaumes 97:10: "Le Seigneur aime ceux qui détestent le mal ; il protège la vie de ses fidèles et les délivre des mains des méchants." - Ce verset reflète l'appel d'Amos dans Amos 5:15 à haïr le mal et à aimer le bien.

Osée 6:6: "Car je désire la miséricorde et non le sacrifice, et la connaissance de Dieu plutôt que les holocaustes." - Ce verset d'Osée fait écho à la critique d'Amos du formalisme religieux vide dans Amos 5:21-23, soulignant l'importance d'une véritable dévotion à Dieu.
