2 Timothy, 2

1. As for you, my dear son, take strength from the grace which is in Christ Jesus.

1. You then, my son, be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus,

2. Pass on to reliable people what you have heard from me through many witnesses so that they in turn will be able to teach others.

2. and what you have heard from me before many witnesses entrust to faithful men who will be able to teach others also.

3. Bear with your share of difficulties, like a good soldier of Christ Jesus.

3. Share in suffering as a good soldier of Christ Jesus.

4. No one on active service involves himself in the affairs of civilian life, because he must win the approval of the man who enlisted him;

4. No soldier on service gets entangled in civilian pursuits, since his aim is to satisfy the one who enlisted him.

5. or again someone who enters an athletic contest wins only by competing in the sports -- a prize can be won only by competing according to the rules;

5. An athlete is not crowned unless he competes according to the rules.

6. and again, it is the farmer who works hard that has the first claim on any crop that is harvested.

6. It is the hard-working farmer who ought to have the first share of the crops.

7. Think over what I have said, and the Lord will give you full understanding.

7. Think over what I say, for the Lord will grant you understanding in everything.

8. Remember the gospel that I carry, 'Jesus Christ risen from the dead, sprung from the race of David';

8. Remember Jesus Christ, risen from the dead, descended from David, as preached in my gospel,

9. it is on account of this that I have to put up with suffering, even to being chained like a criminal. But God's message cannot be chained up.

10. So I persevere for the sake of those who are chosen, so that they, too, may obtain the salvation that is in Christ Jesus with eternal glory.

10. Therefore I endure everything for the sake of the elect, that they also may obtain salvation in Christ Jesus with its eternal glory.

11. Here is a saying that you can rely on: If we have died with him, then we shall live with him.

11. The saying is sure: If we have died with him, we shall also live with him;

12. If we persevere, then we shall reign with him. If we disown him, then he will disown us.

12. if we endure, we shall also reign with him; if we deny him, he also will deny us;

13. If we are faithless, he is faithful still, for he cannot disown his own self.

13. if we are faithless, he remains faithful -- for he cannot deny himself.

14. Remind them of this; and tell them in the name of God that there must be no wrangling about words: all that this ever achieves is the destruction of those who are listening.

14. Remind them of this, and charge them before the Lord to avoid disputing about words, which does no good, but only ruins the hearers.

15. Make every effort to present yourself before God as a proven worker who has no need to be ashamed, but who keeps the message of truth on a straight path.

15. Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a workman who has no need to be ashamed, rightly handling the word of truth.

16. Have nothing to do with godless philosophical discussions -- they only lead further and further away from true religion.

16. Avoid such godless chatter, for it will lead people into more and more ungodliness,

17. Talk of this kind spreads corruption like gangrene, as in the case of Hymenaeus and Philetus,

17. and their talk will eat its way like gangrene. Among them are Hymenae'us and Phile'tus,

18. the men who have gone astray from the truth, claiming that the resurrection has already taken place. They are upsetting some people's faith.

18. who have swerved from the truth by holding that the resurrection is past already. They are upsetting the faith of some.

19. However, God's solid foundation-stone stands firm, and this is the seal on it: 'The Lord knows those who are his own' and 'All who call on the name of the Lord must avoid evil.'

19. But God's firm foundation stands, bearing this seal: "The Lord knows those who are his," and, "Let every one who names the name of the Lord depart from iniquity."

20. Not all the dishes in a large house are made of gold and silver; some are made of wood or earthenware: the former are held in honour, the latter held cheap.

20. In a great house there are not only vessels of gold and silver but also of wood and earthenware, and some for noble use, some for ignoble.

21. If someone holds himself aloof from these faults I speak of, he will be a vessel held in honour, dedicated and fit for the Master, ready for any good work.

21. If any one purifies himself from what is ignoble, then he will be a vessel for noble use, consecrated and useful to the master of the house, ready for any good work.

22. Turn away from the passions of youth, concentrate on uprightness, faith, love and peace, in union with all those who call on the Lord with a pure heart.

22. So shun youthful passions and aim at righteousness, faith, love, and peace, along with those who call upon the Lord from a pure heart.

23. Avoid these foolish and undisciplined speculations, understanding that they only give rise to quarrels;

23. Have nothing to do with stupid, senseless controversies; you know that they breed quarrels.

24. and a servant of the Lord must not engage in quarrels, but must be kind to everyone, a good teacher, and patient.

24. And the Lord's servant must not be quarrelsome but kindly to every one, an apt teacher, forbearing,

25. He must be gentle when he corrects people who oppose him, in the hope that God may give them a change of mind so that they recognise the truth

25. correcting his opponents with gentleness. God may perhaps grant that they will repent and come to know the truth,

26. and come to their senses, escaping the trap of the devil who made them his captives and subjected them to his will.

26. and they may escape from the snare of the devil, after being captured by him to do his will.

2:1-3 - Paul exhorte Timothée à se fortifier dans la grâce du Christ et à transmettre son enseignement aux autres en bon soldat du Christ. La persévérance et la fidélité à l'Évangile sont fondamentales pour la croissance de l'Église (voir aussi 1 Corinthiens 15:58 et Éphésiens 6:10-18).

2:4-7 - La métaphore du soldat, de l'athlète et du fermier illustre la nécessité de concentration, de discipline et de persévérance dans le ministère chrétien. La récompense est réservée à ceux qui restent fidèles et engagés (voir aussi 1 Corinthiens 9:24-27 et Galates 6:9).

2:8-10 - Paul rappelle à Timothée la résurrection du Christ, fondement de notre espérance et de notre foi. Souffrir pour le Christ est un privilège, car cela conduit à la gloire éternelle (voir aussi Romains 6:5-11 et 1 Pierre 1:3-4).

02:15 - Paul exhorte Timothée à se présenter devant Dieu comme un homme approuvé, un ouvrier qui n'a pas à rougir. Une interprétation correcte de la parole de vérité est essentielle au ministère (voir aussi 1 Corinthiens 9:24-27 et Colossiens 1:28).

2:22-26 - Paul recommande à Timothée de fuir les passions de la jeunesse et de rechercher la justice, la foi, l'amour et la paix. La discipline dans le comportement chrétien est essentielle pour aider les autres à se réconcilier avec Dieu (voir aussi Jacques 3:17 et 1 Corinthiens 6:18).
