1 Peter, 1

1. Peter, apostle of Jesus Christ, to all those living as aliens in the Dispersion of Pontus, Galatia, Cappadocia, Asia and Bithynia, who have been chosen,

1. Peter, an apostle of Jesus Christ, To the exiles of the Dispersion in Pontus, Galatia, Cappado'cia, Asia, and Bithyn'ia,

2. in the foresight of God the Father, to be made holy by the Spirit, obedient to Jesus Christ and sprinkled with his blood: Grace and peace be yours in abundance.

2. chosen and destined by God the Father and sanctified by the Spirit for obedience to Jesus Christ and for sprinkling with his blood: May grace and peace be multiplied to you.

3. Blessed be God the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who in his great mercy has given us a new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead

8. You have not seen him, yet you love him; and still without seeing him you believe in him and so are already filled with a joy so glorious that it cannot be described;

8. Without having seen him you love him; though you do not now see him you believe in him and rejoice with unutterable and exalted joy.

9. and you are sure of the goal of your faith, that is, the salvation of your souls.

10. This salvation was the subject of the search and investigation of the prophets who spoke of the grace you were to receive,

It was revealed to them that it was for your sake and not their own that they were acting as servants delivering the message which has now been announced to you by those who preached to you the gospel through the Holy Spirit sent from heaven. Even the angels long to catch a glimpse of these things.

13. Your minds, then, must be sober and ready for action; put all your hope in the grace brought to you by the revelation of Jesus Christ.

13. Therefore gird up your minds, be sober, set your hope fully upon the grace that is coming to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ.

14. Do not allow yourselves to be shaped by the passions of your old ignorance,

15. but as obedient children, be yourselves holy in all your activity, after the model of the Holy One who calls us,

15. but as he who called you is holy, be holy yourselves in all your conduct;

16. since scripture says, 'Be holy, for I am holy.'

16. since it is written, "You shall be holy, for I am holy."

17. And if you address as Father him who judges without favouritism according to each individual's deeds, live out the time of your exile here in reverent awe.

17. And if you invoke as Father him who judges each one impartially according to his deeds, conduct yourselves with fear throughout the time of your exile.

18. For you know that the price of your ransom from the futile way of life handed down from your ancestors was paid, not in anything perishable like silver or gold,

18. You know that you were ransomed from the futile ways inherited from your fathers, not with perishable things such as silver or gold,

19. but in precious blood as of a blameless and spotless lamb, Christ.

19. but with the precious blood of Christ, like that of a lamb without blemish or spot.

20. He was marked out before the world was made, and was revealed at the final point of time for your sake.

20. He was destined before the foundation of the world but was made manifest at the end of the times for your sake.

21. Through him you now have faith in God, who raised him from the dead and gave him glory for this very purpose -- that your faith and hope should be in God.

22. Since by your obedience to the truth you have purified yourselves so that you can experience the genuine love of brothers, love each other intensely from the heart;

23. for your new birth was not from any perishable seed but from imperishable seed, the living and enduring Word of God.

23. You have been born anew, not of perishable seed but of imperishable, through the living and abiding word of God;

24. For all humanity is grass, and all its beauty like the wild flower's. As grass withers, the flower fades,

24. for "All flesh is like grass and all its glory like the flower of grass. The grass withers, and the flower falls,

25. but the Word of the Lord remains for ever. And this Word is the Good News that has been brought to you.

25. but the word of the Lord abides for ever." That word is the good news which was preached to you.

1:3-5 - L'espérance vivante offerte aux chrétiens repose sur la résurrection de Jésus-Christ. Le salut, gardé par Dieu, est un don inébranlable pour tous les croyants, protégés par la puissance divine. La vie chrétienne est un cheminement marqué par la foi et l'espérance en Christ (voir aussi Éphésiens 1:18 et Romains 5:2).

1:6-9 - La joie du chrétien est totale, même au cœur des épreuves, car la foi est raffinée comme l'or, prouvant l'authenticité de la confiance en Dieu. Les souffrances passagères préparent les chrétiens à la gloire éternelle (voir aussi Jacques 1:2-4 et Romains 8:18).

1:10-12 - Les prophètes de l'Ancien Testament ont prédit la grâce qui serait révélée en Christ. Le salut est le thème central des Écritures, et le Saint-Esprit joue un rôle essentiel dans la révélation de cette grâce (voir aussi Ésaïe 53:1-3 et Luc 24:27).

1:18-21 - La rédemption en Christ est le prix payé pour le péché, et cette rédemption n'a pas été acquise avec de l'or ou de l'argent, mais par le précieux sang de Jésus.
