Tobit, 6

1. And she dried her tears.

2. The boy left with the angel, and the dog followed behind. The two walked on, and when the first evening came they camped beside the Tigris.

3. The boy had gone down to the river to wash his feet, when a great fish leapt out of the water and tried to swallow his foot. The boy gave a shout

3. Der Engel rief Tobias zu: Pack ihn! Da packte der junge Mann zu und warf den Fisch ans Ufer.

4. and the angel said, 'Catch the fish; do not let it go.' The boy mastered the fish and pulled it onto the bank.

4. Und der Engel sagte zu Tobias: Schneide den Fisch auf, nimm Herz, Leber und Galle heraus und bewahre sie gut auf!

5. The angel said, 'Cut it open; take out gall, heart and liver; set these aside and throw the entrails away, for gall and heart and liver have curative properties.'

5. Der junge Tobias tat, was ihm der Engel sagte. Dann brieten sie den Fisch und aßen ihn.

6. The boy cut the fish open and took out gall and heart and liver. He fried part of the fish for his meal and kept some for salting. Then they walked on again together until they were nearly in Media.

9. As regards the gall, this is used as an eye ointment for anyone having white spots on his eyes; after using it, you have only to blow on the spots to cure them.'

13. You have the right to marry her. Listen, brother; this very evening I shall speak about the girl to her father and arrange for her to be betrothed to you, and when we come back from Rhages we can celebrate the marriage. I assure you, Raguel has no right whatever to refuse you or to betroth her to anyone else. 15. Ich bin der einzige Sohn meines Vaters und habe Angst, dass ich ebenso sterben muss wie die anderen Männer, wenn ich das Brautgemach betrete. Ein Dämon liebt sie und bringt alle um, die ihr nahekommen. Darum habe ich Angst, dass ich sterben muss und dass ich dann meinen Vater und meine Mutter aus Kummer um mich ins Grab bringe. Sie haben keinen zweiten Sohn, der sie dann begraben könnte.

16. The angel said, 'Have you forgotten your father's advice? After all, he urged you to choose a wife from your father's family. Listen then, brother. Do not worry about the demon; take her. This very evening, I promise, she will be given you as your wife.

16. Da sagte der Engel zu ihm: Erinnerst du dich nicht mehr, wie dein Vater dir aufgetragen hat, nur eine Frau aus deinem Volk zu heiraten? Darum hör jetzt auf mich, Bruder! Sie wird deine Frau werden. Und mach dir keine Sorgen wegen des Dämons! Noch in dieser Nacht wird sie deine Frau.

17. Then once you are in the bridal room, take the heart and liver of the fish and lay a little of it on the burning incense. The reek will rise,

17. Wenn du in das Brautgemach gehst, nimm etwas Glut aus dem Räucherbecken, leg ein Stück vom Herz und von der Leber des Fisches darauf und lass es verbrennen! Sobald der Dämon den Geruch spürt, wird er fliehen und in alle Ewigkeit nicht mehr zurückkommen.

Hab also keine Angst; das Mädchen ist schon immer für dich bestimmt gewesen. Du wirst sie aus ihrer Not befreien; sie wird mit dir ziehen und wird dir gewiss Kinder schenken.
