Josué, 23

1. Un long temps s'était écoulé depuis queYahweh avait donné du repos à Israël, en ledélivrant de tous ses ennemis d'alentour, et Josuéétait vieux, avancé en âge.

1. Many years later, after the LORD had given the Israelites rest from all their enemies round about them, and when Joshua was old and advanced in years,

2. Alors Josué convoqua tout Israël, ses anciens, seschefs, ses juges et ses officiers, et leur dit: «Je suisdevenu vieux, avancé en âge.

2. he summoned all Israel (including their elders, leaders, judges and officers) and said to them: "I am old and advanced in years.

3. Vous avez vu tout ce que Yahweh, votre Dieu a fait àtoutes ces nations devant vous; car c'est Yahweh, votre Dieu, quia combattu pour vous.

3. You have seen all that the LORD, your God, has done for you against all these nations; for it has been the LORD, your God, himself who fought for you.

4. Voyez: je vous ai distribué par le sort enhéritage pour vos tribus, ces nations qui sontrestées et toutes celles que j'ai exterminées,depuis le Jourdain jusqu'à la grande mer vers le soleilcouchant.

4. Bear in mind that I have apportioned among your tribes as their heritage the nations that survive (as well as those I destroyed) between the Jordan and the Great Sea in the west.

5. Yahweh, votre Dieu, les repoussera devant vous, et les chasseradevant vous, et vous posséderez leur pays, comme Yahweh,votre Dieu, vous l'a dit.

5. The LORD, your God, will drive them out and dislodge them at your approach, so that you will take possession of their land as the LORD, your God, promised you.

6. Montrez donc un grand courage pour observer et mettre enpratique tout ce qui est écrit dans le livre de la loi deMoïse, sans vous en détourner ni à droite nià gauche,

6. Therefore strive hard to observe and carry out all that is written in the book of the law of Moses, not straying from it in any way,

7. sans vous mêler avec ces nations qui sont restéesparmi vous; n'invoquez point le nom de leurs dieux, ne jurezpoint par eux, ne les servez point et ne vous prosternez pointdevant eux;

7. or mingling with these nations while they survive among you. You must not invoke their gods, or swear by them, or serve them, or worship them,

8. mais attachez-vous à Yahweh, votre Dieu, comme vousl'avez fait jusqu'à ce jour.

8. but you must remain loyal to the LORD, your God, as you have been to this day.

9. Yahweh a chassé devant vous des nations grandes etpuissantes, et personne n'a pu tenir devant vous jusqu'àce jour.

9. At your approach the LORD has driven out large and strong nations, and to this day no one has withstood you.

10. Un seul d'entre vous en poursuivait mille, car Yahweh, votreDieu, combattait pour vous, comme il vous l'a dit.

10. One of you puts to flight a thousand, because it is the LORD, your God, himself who fights for you, as he promised you.

11. Prenez donc garde à vous mêmes, pour que vousaimiez Yahweh, votre Dieu.

11. Take great care, however, to love the LORD, your God.

12. Car si vous vous détournez et que vous vous attachiezau reste de ces nations qui sont demeurées parmi vous, sivous contractez des mariages avec elles et que vous vousmêliez à elles et qu'elles se mêlent àvous,

12. For if you ever abandon him and ally yourselves with the remnant of these nations while they survive among you, by intermarrying and intermingling with them,

13. sachez bien que Yahweh, votre Dieu, ne continuera pas dechasser ces nations devant nous; mais elles seront pour vous unfilet et un piège, une verge sur vos flancs et desépines dans vos yeux, jusqu'à ce que vous ayezpéri de dessus cette excellente terre que vous adonnée Yahweh, votre Dieu.

13. know for certain that the LORD, your God, will no longer drive these nations out of your way. Instead they will be a snare and a trap for you, a scourge for your sides and thorns for your eyes, until you perish from this good land which the LORD, your God, has given you.

14. Voici que je m'en vais aujourd'hui par le chemin de toute laterre; reconnaissez de tout votre coeur et de toute votreâme, que, de toutes les bonnes paroles que Yahweh, votreDieu, a prononcées sur vous, aucune parole n'estrestée sans effet; toutes se sont accomplies pour vous,aucune parole n'en est tombée.

14. "Today, as you see, I am going the way of all men. So now acknowledge with your whole heart and soul that not one of all the promises the LORD, your God, made to you has remained unfulfilled. Every promise has been fulfilled for you, with not one single exception.

15. De même donc que toutes les bonnes paroles que Yahweh,votre Dieu, vous a adressées, se sont accomplies pourvous, de même aussi Yahweh accomplira sur vous toutes lesparoles de menace, jusqu'à ce qu'il vous aitdétruits de dessus cette excellente terre que Yahweh,votre Dieu, vous a donnée.

15. But just as every promise the LORD, your God, made to you has been fulfilled for you, so will he fulfill every threat, even so far as to exterminate you from this good land which the LORD, your God, has given you.

16. Si vous transgressez l'alliance de Yahweh, votre Dieu, qu'ilvous a prescrite, et si vous allez servir d'autres dieux, et vousprosterner devant eux, la colère de Yahweh s'enflammeracontre vous, et vous périrez bientôt de dessus lebon pays qu'il vous a donné.»

16. If you transgress the covenant of the LORD, your God, which he enjoined on you, serve other gods and worship them, the anger of the LORD will flare up against you and you will quickly perish from the good land which he has given you."
