Gênesis, 39
1. José foi conduzido ao Egito, e Putifar, um oficial egípcio do faraó, chefe da guarda, comprou-o aos ismaelitas que o levavam.
1. And Joseph was brought into Egypt, and Putiphar an eunuch of Pharao, chief captain of the army, an Egyptian, bought him of the Ismaelites, by whom he was brought.
2. O Senhor estava com José, e tudo lhe prosperava. Morava na casa do seu senhor, o egípcio.
2. And the Lord was with him, and he was a prosperous man in all things: and he dwelt in his master's house,
3. Seu senhor viu que o Senhor estava com ele e lhe fazia prosperar tudo o que empreendia.
3. Who knew very well that the Lord was with him, and made all that he did to prosper in his hand.
4. José conquistou a simpatia do seu senhor, que o empregou a seu serviço, pondo-o à testa de sua casa e confiando-lhe todos os seus bens.
4. And Joseph found favour in the sight of his master, and ministered to him: and being set over all by him, he governed the house committed to him, and all things that were delivered to him:
5. Desde o momento em que José tomou o governo de sua casa e de todos os seus bens, o Senhor abençoou a casa do egípcio, por causa de José: a bênção do Senhor desceu sobre tudo o que lhe pertencia, na casa como nos campos.
5. And the Lord blessed the house of the Egyptian for Joseph's sake, and multiplied all his substance, both at home, and in the fields.
6. Ele entregou todos os seus negócios a José, sem mais se preocupar de coisa alguma, exceto do que se alimentava. Ora, José era belo de corpo e de rosto.

7. E aconteceu, depois de tudo isso, que a mulher de seu senhor lançou seus olhos em José e disse-lhe: “Dorme comigo”.
7. h And after many days his mistress 'cast her eyes on Joseph, and said: Lie with me.
8. Mas ele recusou: “Meu senhor – disse-lhe ele – não me pede conta alguma do que se faz na casa, e confiou-me todos os seus bens.
8. But he, in no wise consenting to that wicked act, said to her: Behold, my master hath delivered all things to me, and knoweth not what he hath in his own house:
9. Não há maior do que eu nesta casa; ele nada me interdisse, exceto tu, que és sua mulher. Como poderia eu cometer um tão grande crime e pecar contra Deus?”.
9. Neither is there any thing which is hot in my power, or that he hath not delivered to me, but thee, who art his wife : how then can I do this wicked thing, and I sin against my God?
10. Em vão se esforçava ela todos os dias, falando a José; ele não consentia em dormir com ela e unir-se a ela.
10. With such words as these day by day, both the woman was importunate with the young man, and he refused the adultery.
11. Certo dia, tendo ele entrado na casa para fazer seus serviços, e não se encontrando ali ninguém da casa,
11. Now it happened on it certain day, that Joseph went into the house, and was doing some business without any, man with him:
12. ela segurou-o pelo manto, dizendo: “Dorme comigo!”. Mas José, largando-lhe o manto nas mãos, fugiu.
12. And she catching the skirt of his garment, said: Lie with me. But he leaving the garment in her hand, fled, and went out.
13. Vendo a mulher que ele lhe tinha deixado o manto nas mãos e fugido,
13. And when the woman saw the garment in her hands, and herself disregarded,
14. chamou a gente de sua casa e disse-lhes: “Vede: trouxeram-nos este hebreu para a casa a fim de que ele abuse de nós. Este homem veio-me procurar para dormir comigo, mas eu gritei.
14. She called to her the men of her house, and said to them: See, he hath brought in a Hebrew, to abuse us: he came in to me, to lie with me : and when I cried out,
15. E vendo que eu me punha a gritar, deixou seu manto ao meu lado e fugiu”.

16. E guardou junto de si as vestes de José até a volta de seu senhor.
16. For a proof therefore of her fidelity, she kept the garment, and shewed it to her husband when he returned home:
17. E fez-lhe a mesma narrativa: “O escravo hebreu – disse ela – que nos trouxeste, veio à minha procura para abusar de mim.
17. And said: The Hebrew servant, whom thou best brought, came to me to abuse me.
18. Mas, pondo-me a gritar, deixou o seu manto ao meu lado e fugiu”.
18. And when he heard me cry, he left the garment which I held, and fled out.
19. Ao ouvir isso de sua mulher, contando-lhe como se tinha comportado com ela o seu servo, ele enfureceu-se,
19. His master hearing these things, and giving too much credit to his wife's words, was very angry.
20. e lançou José na prisão, onde se encontravam detidos os prisioneiros do rei. E José foi encarcerado.
20. And cast Joseph into the prison, where the king's prisoners were kept, and he was there shut up.
21. O Senhor estava com ele. Mostrou-lhe sua bondade e fez que ele conquistasse a simpatia do chefe da prisão.
21. But the Lord was with Joseph and having mercy upon him gave him favour in the sight of the chief keeper of the prison:
22. Este confiou a José todos os presos que ali se encontravam, e nada se fazia sem sua ordem.
22. Who delivered into his hand all the prisoners that were kept in custody: and whatsoever was done was under him.
23. O chefe da prisão não fiscalizava nada do que fazia José, porque o Senhor estava com ele e fazia-lhe prosperar tudo o que empreendia.
23. Neither did he himself know any thing, having committed all things to him: for the Lord was with him, and made all that he did to prosper.
