Romains, 4

1. Quel avantage dirons-nous donc qu'Abraham, notre père, ait obtenu selon la chair?

1. What then can we say that Abraham found, our ancestor according to the flesh?

2. Si Abraham a été justifié par les ?uvres, il a sujet de se glorifier. Mais il n'en a pas sujet devant Dieu.

2. Indeed, if Abraham was justified on the basis of his works, he has reason to boast; but this was not so in the sight of God.

3. En effet, que dit l'Ecriture? " Abraham crut à Dieu, et cela lui fut imputé à justice. "

3. For what does the scripture say? "Abraham believed God, and it was credited to him as righteousness."

4. Or, à celui qui fait une ?uvre, le salaire est imputé, non comme une grâce, mais comme une chose due;

4. A worker's wage is credited not as a gift, but as something due.

5. et à celui qui ne fait aucune ?uvre, mais qui croit en celui qui justifie l'impie, sa foi lui est imputée à justice.

5. But when one does not work, yet believes in the one who justifies the ungodly, his faith is credited as righteousness.

6. C'est ainsi que David proclame la béatitude de l'homme à qui Dieu impute la justice indépendamment des ?uvres :

6. So also David declares the blessedness of the person to whom God credits righteousness apart from works:

7. Heureux ceux dont les iniquités sont pardonnées, et dont les péchés ont été couverts !

7. "Blessed are they whose iniquities are forgiven and whose sins are covered.

8. Heureux l'homme à qui le Seigneur n'impute pas son péché ! "

8. Blessed is the man whose sin the Lord does not record."

9. Ce bonheur n'est-il que pour les circoncis, ou est-il également pour les incirconcis? Car nous disons que la foi fut imputée à justice à Abraham.

9. Does this blessedness apply only to the circumcised, or to the uncircumcised as well? Now we assert that "faith was credited to Abraham as righteousness."

10. Comment donc lui fut-elle imputée? Etait-ce en l'état de circoncision, ou en l'état d'incirconcision? Ce ne fut pas dans l'état de circoncision, il était encore incirconcis.

10. Under what circumstances was it credited? Was he circumcised or not? He was not circumcised, but uncircumcised.

11. Il reçut ensuite le signe de la circoncision comme sceau de la justice qu'il avait obtenue par la foi quand il était incirconcis, afin d'être le père de tous ceux qui ont la foi bien qu'incirconcis, pour que la justice leur soit aussi imputée,

11. And he received the sign of circumcision as a seal on the righteousness received through faith while he was uncircumcised. Thus he was to be the father of all the uncircumcised who believe, so that to them (also) righteousness might be credited,

12. et le père des circoncis, de ceux qui ne sont pas seulement circoncis, mais qui marchent en même temps sur les traces de la foi qu'avait notre père Abraham lorsqu'il était incirconcis.

12. as well as the father of the circumcised who not only are circumcised, but also follow the path of faith that our father Abraham walked while still uncircumcised.

13. En effet, ce n'est point par la Loi que l'héritage du monde a été promis à Abraham et à sa postérité; c'est par la justice de la foi.

13. It was not through the law that the promise was made to Abraham and his descendants that he would inherit the world, but through the righteousness that comes from faith.

14. Car si ceux qui ont la Loi sont héritiers, la foi est vaine et la promesse est sans effet,

14. For if those who adhere to the law are the heirs, faith is null and the promise is void.

15. parce que la loi produit la colère, et que là où il n'y a pas de loi, il n'y a pas non plus de transgression.

15. For the law produces wrath; but where there is no law, neither is there violation.

16. Donc c'est bien par la foi, afin que ce soit par grâce, pour que la promesse soit assurée à toute la postérité, non seulement à ceux qui relèvent de la Loi, mais encore à ceux qui relèvent de la foi d'Abraham, notre père à tous,

16. For this reason, it depends on faith, so that it may be a gift, and the promise may be guaranteed to all his descendants, not to those who only adhere to the law but to those who follow the faith of Abraham, who is the father of all of us,

17. selon qu'il est écrit : " Je t'ai fait père d'un grand nombre de nations. " Il l'est devant celui auquel il a cru, devant Dieu, qui donne la vie aux morts et qui appelle les choses qui ne sont point comme si elles étaient.

17. as it is written, "I have made you father of many nations." He is our father in the sight of God, in whom he believed, who gives life to the dead and calls into being what does not exist.

18. Espérant contre toute espérance, il crut, en sorte qu'il devint le père d'un grand nombre de nations, selon ce qui lui avait été dit : " Telle sera ta postérité. "

18. He believed, hoping against hope, that he would become "the father of many nations," according to what was said, "Thus shall your descendants be."

19. Et, inébranlable dans sa foi, il ne considéra pas que son corps était déjà éteint, puisqu'il avait près de cent ans, ni que le sein de Sara était épuisé.

19. He did not weaken in faith when he considered his own body as (already) dead (for he was almost a hundred years old) and the dead womb of Sarah.

20. Devant la promesse de Dieu, il n'eut ni hésitation ni défiance; mais puisant sa force dans la foi, il rendit gloire à Dieu,

20. He did not doubt God's promise in unbelief; rather, he was empowered by faith and gave glory to God

21. pleinement convaincu qu'il saura accomplir la promesse qu'il a faite.

21. and was fully convinced that what he had promised he was also able to do.

22. Et voilà pourquoi sa foi lui fut imputée à justice.

22. That is why "it was credited to him as righteousness."

23. Or ce n'est pas pour lui seul qu'il est écrit qu'elle lui fut imputée à justice,

23. But it was not for him alone that it was written that "it was credited to him";

24. mais c'est aussi pour nous, à qui elle doit être imputée, pour nous qui croyons en celui qui a ressuscité d'entre les morts Jésus-Christ, Notre-Seigneur,

24. it was also for us, to whom it will be credited, who believe in the one who raised Jesus our Lord from the dead,

25. lequel a été livré pour nos offenses, et est ressuscité pour notre justification.

25. who was handed over for our transgressions and was raised for our justification.
