2 Maccabées, 15

1. Cependant Nicanor apprit que Judas et ses compagnonsétaient postés du côté de la Samarie,et il résolut de les attaquer en toute sûretéle jour du sabbat.

1. When Nicanor learned that Judas and his companions were in the territory of Samaria, he decided to attack them in all safety on the day of rest.

2. Les Juifs qui le suivaient par contrainte, lui dirent: "Ne lesmassacre pas d'une manière si féroce et si barbare,mais rends gloire au jour qui a été honoréet sanctifié par Celui qui gouverne tout."

2. The Jews who were forced to follow him pleaded, "Do not massacre them in that way, like a savage barbarian, but show respect for the day which the All-seeing has exalted with holiness above all other days."

3. Alors ce triple scélérat demanda s'il y avait auciel un souverain qui eût ordonné decélébrer le jour du sabbat.

3. At this the thrice-sinful wretch asked if there was a ruler in heaven who prescribed the keeping of the sabbath day.

4. Ils lui répondirent "C'est le Seigneur, Dieu vivant, luile souverain Maître au ciel, qui a ordonné desolenniser le septième jour".

4. When they replied that there was indeed such a ruler in heaven, the living LORD himself, who commanded the observance of the sabbath day,

5. - "Et moi aussi, reprit l'autre, et, je suis souverain sur laterre, et je commande qu'on prenne les armes et qu'on fasse leservice du roi. " Pourtant il ne réussit pas àréaliser son mauvais dessein.

5. he said, "I, on my part, am ruler on earth, and my orders are that you take up arms and carry out the king's business." Nevertheless he did not succeed in carrying out his cruel plan.

6. Pendant que Nicanor, dans son orgueilleusesécurité, songeait à dresser untrophée commun de Judas et de ses compagnons,

6. In his utter boastfulness and arrogance Nicanor had determined to erect a public monument of victory over Judas and his men.

7. Machabée ne cessait d'avoir confiance, avec pleineespérance, qu'il obtiendrait assistance de la part duSeigneur.

7. But Maccabeus remained confident, fully convinced that he would receive help from the LORD.

8. Il exhortait les siens à ne pas craindre l'attaque desnations, mais, se souvenant des secours que le Ciel leur avaitaccordés dans le passé, à compter que leTout-Puissant leur donnerait encore en ce moment aide etvictoire.

8. He urged his men not to fear the enemy, but mindful of the help they had received from Heaven in the past, to expect that now, too, victory would be given them by the Almighty.

9. Il les encouragea en citant la loi et les prophètes, etleur rappela en outre les combats qu'ils avaient soutenus, etleur inspira ainsi une grande ardeur.

9. By encouraging them with words from the law and the prophets, and by reminding them of the battles they had already won, he filled them with fresh enthusiasm.

10. Après avoir relevé leur courage, il leur donnases ordres, leur représentant en même temps laperfidie des nations et leur violation des serments.

10. Having stirred up their courage, he gave his orders and pointed out at the same time the perfidy of the Gentiles and their violation of oaths.

11. Quand il eut armé chacun d'eux, non pas tant de lasécurité que donnent les boucliers et les lances,mais de la confiance qu'inspirent les bonnes paroles, il leurraconta en outre un songe digne de foi, une vision réelle,qui les réjouit tous.

11. When he had armed each of them, not so much with the safety of shield and spear as with the encouragement of noble words, he cheered them all by relating a dream, a kind of vision, worthy of belief.

12. Voici ce qu'il avait vu: Le grand prêtre Onias, cethomme de bien, d'un abord modeste et de moeurs douces,distingué dans son langage et adonné dèsl'enfance à toutes les pratiques de la vertu, il l'avaitvu, les mains étendues, priant pour toute la nation desJuifs.

12. What he saw was this: Onias, the former high priest, a good and virtuous man, modest in appearance, gentle in manners, distinguished in speech, and trained from childhood in every virtuous practice, was praying with outstretched arms for the whole Jewish community.

13. Ensuite lui était apparu, de la mêmemanière, un homme distingué par son grand âgeet son air de dignité, d'un aspect admirable, etentouré de la plus imposante majesté.

13. Then in the same way another man appeared, distinguished by his white hair and dignity, and with an air about him of extraordinary, majestic authority.

14. Onias, prenant la parole, lui avait dit: "Celui-ci est l'amide ses frères, qui prie beaucoup pour le peuple et pour laville sainte, Jérémie, le prophète deDieu."

14. Onias then said of him, "This is God's prophet Jeremiah, who loves his brethren and fervently prays for his people and their holy city."

15. Puis Jérémie, étendant la main droite,avait donné à Judas une épée d'or et,en la lui remettant, il avait dit:

15. Stretching out his right hand, Jeremiah presented a gold sword to Judas. As he gave it to him he said,

16. "Prends cette sainte épée, c'est un don de Dieu;avec elle tu briseras tes ennemis."

16. "Accept this holy sword as a gift from God; with it you shall crush your adversaries."

17. Animés par ces nobles paroles de Judas, bien capablesd'exciter à la vaillance et de fortifier les âmesdes jeunes gens, ils résolurent de ne pas se retrancherdans un camp, mais de se jeter hardiment sur l'ennemi, et, dansun combat acharné, de décider l'affaire, puisque laville, la religion et le temple étaient enpéril.

17. Encouraged by Judas' noble words, which had power to instill valor and stir young hearts to courage, the Jews determined not to delay, but to charge gallantly and decide the issue by hand-to-hand combat with the utmost courage, since their city and its temple with the sacred vessels were in danger.

18. Car, dans cette lutte, ils songeaient moins à leursfemmes, à leurs enfants, à leurs frères età leurs proches; leur plus grande crainte, et lapremière, était pour le temple saint.

18. They were not so much concerned about their wives and children or their brothers and kinsmen; their first and foremost fear was for the consecrated sanctuary.

19. L'angoisse des citoyens restés dans la villen'était pas moindre, inquiets qu'ils étaient surl'issue du combat qui allait se livrer dehors.

19. Those who remained in the city suffered a like agony, anxious as they were about the battle in the open country.

20. Pendant que tous attendaient le prochain dénouement,que déjà les ennemis se rassemblaient, en ordre debataille, que les éléphants étaientdisposés à la place convenable et les cavaliers surles ailes,

20. Everyone now awaited the decisive moment. The enemy were already drawing near with their troops drawn up in battle line, their elephants placed in strategic positions, and their cavalry stationed on the flanks.

21. Machabée, voyant cette immense multitude, l'appareilvarié de leurs armes, l'aspect farouche deséléphants, habilement disposés, leva lesmains au ciel et invoqua le Seigneur qui fait des prodiges; caril savait que la victoire ne vient pas de la force des armes,mais que c'est Dieu qui en décide et l'accorde àceux qui en sont dignes.

21. Maccabeus, contemplating the hosts before him, their elaborate equipment, and the fierceness of their elephants, stretched out his hands toward heaven and called upon the LORD who works miracles; for he knew that it is not through arms but through the LORD'S decision that victory is won by those who deserve it.

22. Voici quelle fut sa prière: "Vous, souverainMaître, qui avez envoyé votre ange, sousEzéchias, roi de Juda, et qui avez exterminé centquatre-vingt cinq mille hommes du camp de Sennachérib,

22. He prayed to him thus: "You, O LORD, sent your angel in the days of King Hezekiah of Judea, and he slew a hundred and eighty-five thousand men of Sennacherib's army.

23. maintenant encore, ô Souverain des cieux, envoyez votrebon ange devant nous, pour qu'il répande la crainte etl'effroi.

23. Sovereign of the heavens, send a good angel now to spread fear and dread before us.

24. Que par la grandeur de votre bras soient frappés ceuxqui sont venus, le blasphème à la bouche, contrevotre peuple saint!" Telles furent ses paroles.

24. By the might of your arm may those be struck down who have blasphemously come against your holy people!" With this he ended his prayer.

25. Cependant Nicanor et son armée s'avançaient auson des trompettes et des chants de guerre.

25. Nicanor and his men advanced to the sound of trumpets and battle songs.

26. Judas et les siens engagèrent le combat en invoquant eten priant.

26. But Judas and his men met the army with supplication and prayers.

27. Combattant de leurs bras et priant Dieu dans leurs coeurs, ilscouchèrent par terre au moins trente-cinq mille hommes, etils se réjouirent grandement du secours manifeste deDieu.

27. Fighting with their hands and praying to God with their hearts, they laid low at least thirty-five thousand, and rejoiced greatly over this manifestation of God's power.

28. L'affaire terminée, pendant qu'ils sedébandaient joyeusement, ils reconnurent que Nicanorétait tombé, revêtu de son armure.

28. When the battle was over and they were joyfully departing, they discovered Nicanor lying there in all his armor;

29. Alors, au milieu des clameurs et de la confusion, ilsbénirent le Maître souverain dans la langue de leurspères.

29. so they raised tumultuous shouts in their native tongue in praise of the divine Sovereign.

30. Et celui qui s'était consacré tout entier, corpset âme, à la défense de ses concitoyens, quiavait conservé pour ses compatriotes l'affection de sajeunesse, Judas ordonna de couper la tête de Nicanor et samain avec son bras, et de les porter àJérusalem.

30. Then Judas, who was ever in body and soul the chief defender of his fellow citizens, and had maintained from youth his affection for his countrymen, ordered Nicanor's head and whole right arm to be cut off and taken to Jerusalem.

31. Il s'y rendit lui-même, convoqua ses compatriotes et lesprêtres, et, s'étant placé devant l'autel, ilenvoya chercher ceux de la citadelle,

31. When he arrived there, he assembled his countrymen, stationed the priests before the altar, and sent for those in the citadel.

32. et il leur montra la tête du criminel Nicanor et la mainque ce blasphémateur avait étendue avec tantd'insolence contre la demeure sainte du Tout-Puissant.

32. He showed them the vile Nicanor's head and the wretched blasphemer's arm that had been boastfully stretched out against the holy dwelling of the Almighty.

33. Puis, ayant coupé la langue de l'impie Nicanor, ilvoulut qu'on la donnât par morceaux en pâture auxoiseaux, et qu'on suspendit en face du temple le prixremporté par sa folie.

33. He cut out the tongue of the godless Nicanor, saying he would feed it piecemeal to the birds and would hang up the other wages of his folly opposite the temple.

34. Tous firent monter vers le ciel des bénédictionsau Seigneur glorieux, en disant: "Béni soit Celui qui agardé sa demeure sans souillure!"

34. At this, everyone looked toward heaven and praised the Lord who manifests his divine power, saying, "Blessed be he who has kept his own Place undefiled!"

35. Judas attacha la tête de Nicanor à la citadelle,comme un signe manifeste et visible à tous du secours duSeigneur.

35. Judas hung up Nicanor's head on the wall of the citadel, a clear and evident proof to all of the Lord's help.

36. D'un commun accord on rendit un édit public ordonnantde ne pas laisser passer ce jour sans solennité,

36. By public vote it was unanimously decreed never to let this day pass unobserved, but to celebrate it on the thirteenth day of the twelfth month, called Adar in Aramaic, the eve of Mordecai's Day.

37. mais de célébrer le treizième jour dudouzième mois, appelé Adar en syriaque, la veilledu jour dit de Mardochée.

37. Since Nicanor's doings ended in this way, with the city remaining in possession of the Hebrews from that time on, I will bring my own story to an end here too.

38. Ainsi se passèrent les choses concernant Nicanor, et,comme à partir de ce temps la ville demeura en possessiondes Hébreux, moi aussi je finirai là monrécit.

38. If it is well written and to the point, that is what I wanted; if it is poorly done and mediocre, that is the best I could do.

39. Si la disposition des faits en est heureuse et bienconçue, c'est aussi ce que j'ai voulu; si elle estimparfaite et médiocre, c'est tout ce que j'ai pufaire.

39. Just as it is harmful to drink wine alone or water alone, whereas mixing wine with water makes a more pleasant drink that increases delight, so a skillfully composed story delights the ears of those who read the work. Let this, then, be the end.

40. Car de même qu'il ne vaut rien de boire seulement du vinou seulement de l'eau, tandis que le vin mêléà l'eau est bon et produit une agréable jouissance,de même c'est l'art de disposer le récit qui charmeles oreilles de ceux qui lisent l'histoire. C'est donc ici que jetermine.
