Cantar, 8

1. ¡Ah, si fueras tú un hermano mío, amamantado a los pechos de mi madre! Podría besarte, al encontrarte afuera, sin que me despreciaran.

1. O that thou [wert] as my brother, that sucked the breasts of my mother! [when] I should find thee without, I would kiss thee; yea, I should not be despised.

2. Te llevaría, te introduciría en la casa de mi madre, y tú me enseñarías. Te daría a beber vino aromado, el licor de mis granadas.

2. I would lead thee, [and] bring thee into my mother's house, [who] would instruct me: I would cause thee to drink of spiced wine of the juice of my pomegranate.

3. Su izquierda está bajo mi cabeza, y su diestra me abraza.

3. His left hand [should be] under my head, and his right hand should embrace me.

4. Yo os conjuro, hijas de Jerusalén, no despertéis, no desveléis al amor, hasta que le plazca.

4. I charge you, O daughters of Jerusalem, that ye stir not up, nor awake [my] love, until he please.

5. ¿Quién es ésta que sube del desierto, apoyada en su amado? Debajo del manzano te desperté, allí donde te concibió tu madre, donde concibió la que te dio a luz.

5. Who [is] this that cometh up from the wilderness, leaning upon her beloved? I raised thee up under the apple tree: there thy mother brought thee forth: there she brought thee forth [that] bare thee.

6. Ponme cual sello sobre tu corazón, como un sello en tu brazo. Porque es fuerte el amor como la Muerte, implacable como el seol la pasión. Saetas de fuego, sus saetas, una llama de Yahveh.

6. Set me as a seal upon thine heart, as a seal upon thine arm: for love [is] strong as death; jealousy [is] cruel as the grave: the coals thereof [are] coals of fire, [which hath a] most vehement flame.

7. Grandes aguas no pueden apagar el amor, ni los ríos anegarlo. Si alguien ofreciera todos los haberes de su casa por el amor, se granjearía desprecio.

7. Many waters cannot quench love, neither can the floods drown it: if [a] man would give all the substance of his house for love, it would utterly be contemned.

8. Tenemos una hermana pequeña: no tiene pechos todavía. ¿Qué haremos con nuestra hermana el día que se hable de ella?

8. We have a little sister, and she hath no breasts: what shall we do for our sister in the day when she shall be spoken for?

9. - Si es una muralla, construiremos sobre ella almenas de plata si es una puerta, apoyaremos contra ella barras de cedro.

9. If she [be] a wall, we will build upon her a palace of silver: and if she [be] a door, we will inclose her with boards of cedar.

10. - Yo soy una muralla, y mis pechos, como torres. Así soy a sus ojos como quien ha hallado la paz.

10. I [am] a wall, and my breasts like towers: then was I in his eyes as one that found favour.

11. Salomón tenía una viña en Baal Hamón. Encomendó la viña a los guardas, y cada uno le traía por sus frutos mil siclos de plata.

11. Solomon had a vineyard at Baalhamon; he let out the vineyard unto keepers; every one for the fruit thereof was to bring a thousand [pieces] of silver.

12. Mi viña, la mía, está ante mí; los mil siclos para ti, Salomón; y doscientos para los guardas de su fruto.

12. My vineyard, which [is] mine, [is] before me: thou, O Solomon, [must have] a thousand, and those that keep the fruit thereof two hundred.

13. ¡Oh tú, que moras en los huertos, mis compañeros prestan oído a tu voz: ¡deja que la oiga!

13. Thou that dwellest in the gardens, the companions hearken to thy voice: cause me to hear [it].

14. ¡Huye, amado mío, sé como la gacela o el joven cervatillo, por los montes de las balsameras!

14. Make haste, my beloved, and be thou like to a roe or to a young hart upon the mountains of spices.
