9. And the sons of Ammon, going out, set up a battle line before the gate of the city. But the kings who had come to their aid stood separately in the field.

1 Chronicles 19 tells the history of war between David and the Ammonites. Deuteronomy 20:4 - "For the Lord, your God, is what goes with you, to fight against your enemies to save you." This verse shows that David knew that God was with him in the battle against the Ammonites, and that gave him confidence to fight.

This verse shows that David trusted God and his spiritual weapons to fight the ammonites, not in his own skills or physical strength.
