Eclesiastes, 3

1. Para tudo há um tempo, para cada coisa há um momento debaixo do céu:

1. All things have their season, and in their times all things pass under heaven.

2. tempo de nascer e tempo de morrer; tempo de plantar e tempo de arrancar o que se plantou.

2. A time to be born and a time to die. A time to plant, and a time to pluck up that which is planted.

3. Tempo de matar e tempo de curar; tempo de demolir e tempo de construir.

3. A time to kill, and a time to heal. A time to destroy, and a time to build.

4. Tempo de chorar e tempo de rir; tempo de gemer e tempo de dançar.

4. A time to weep, and a time to laugh. A time to mourn, and a time to dance.

5. Tempo de atirar pedras e tempo de ajuntá-las; tempo de abraçar e tempo de apartar-se.*

5. A time to scatter stones, and a time to gather. A time to embrace, and a time to be far from embraces.

6. Tempo de procurar e tempo de perder; tempo de guardar e tempo de jogar fora.

6. A time to get, and a time to lose. A time to keep, and a time to cast away.

7. Tempo de rasgar e tempo de costurar; tempo de calar e tempo de falar.

7. A time to rend, and a time to sew. A time to keep silence, and a time to speak.

8. Tempo de amar e tempo de odiar; tempo de guerra e tempo de paz.

8. A time of love, and a time of hatred. A time of war, and a time of peace.

9. Que proveito tira o trabalhador de sua obra?

9. What hath man more of his labour?

10. Vi o trabalho que Deus impôs aos homens, para que nele se ocupassem.

10. I have seen the trouble, which God hath given the sons of men to be exercised in it.

11. As coisas que Deus fez são boas a seu tempo. Ele pôs, além disso, no seu coração, a duração inteira, sem que ninguém possa compreender a obra divina de um extremo ao outro.*

11. He hath made all things good in their time, and hath delivered the world to their consideration, so that man cannot flnd out the work which God hath made from the beginning to the end.

12. Assim, concluí que nada é melhor para o homem do que alegrar-se e procurar o bem-estar durante sua vida.

12. And I have known that there was no better thing than to rejoice, and to do well in this life.

13. Igualmente é dom de Deus que todos possam comer, beber e gozar do fruto de seu trabalho.

13. For every man that eateth and drinketh, and seeth good of his labour, this is the gift of God.

14. Reconheci que tudo o que Deus faz dura para sempre, sem que se possa ajuntar nada, nem nada suprimir. Deus procede dessa maneira para ser temido.*

14. I have learned that all the works which God hath made, continue for ever: we cannot add any thing, nor take away from those things which God hath made that he may be feared.

15. Aquilo que é, já existia, e aquilo que há de ser, já existiu; Deus chama de novo o que passou.

15. That which hath been made, the same continueth: the things that shall be, have already been: and God restoreth that which is past.

16. Debaixo do sol, observei ainda o seguinte: a injustiça ocupa o lugar do direito, e a iniquidade toma o lugar da justiça.

16. I saw under the sun in the place of judgment wickedness, and in the place of justice iniquity.

17. Então, disse comigo mesmo: “Deus julgará o justo e o ímpio, porque há um tempo para cada coisa e um tempo para cada obra”.

17. And I said in my heart: God shall judge both the just and the wicked, and then shall be the time of every thing.

18. Eu disse comigo mesmo a respeito dos homens: “Deus quer prová-los e mostrar-lhes que, quanto a eles, são semelhantes aos animais”.

18. I said in my heart concerning the sons of men, that God would prove them, and shew them to be like beasts.

19. Porque o destino dos filhos dos homens e o destino dos animais é o mesmo, um mesmo fim os espera. Tanto morre um como o outro. A ambos foi dado o mesmo sopro. A vantagem do homem sobre o animal é nula, porque tudo é vão.

19. Therefore the death of man, and of beasts is one, and the condition of them both is equal: as man dieth, so they also die: all things breathe alike, and man hath nothing more than beast: all things are subject to vanity.

20. Todos caminham para um mesmo lugar. Todos saem do pó e para o pó voltam.

20. And all things go to one place: of earth they were made, and into earth they return together.

21. Quem sabe se o sopro de vida dos filhos dos homens se eleva para o alto e o sopro de vida dos animais desce para a terra?*

21. Who knoweth if the spirit of the children of Adam ascend upward, and if the spirit of the beasts descend downward?

22. E verifiquei que nada há de melhor para o homem do que alegrar-se com o fruto de seus trabalhos. Esta é a parte que lhe toca. Pois, quem lhe dará a conhecer o que acontecerá com o volver dos anos?

22. And I have found that nothing is better than for a man to rejoice in his work, and that this is his portion. For who shall bring him to know the things that shall be after him?
