Jéremie, 40

1. La parole qui fut adressée à Jéré-mie de la part de Yahweh, après que Nabuzardan, chef des gardes, l'eut en-voyé de Rama, l'ayant fait prendre quand il était lié de chaînes au milieu de tous les prisonniers de Jérusalem et de Juda qu'on emmenait à Babylone.

1. This word came to Jeremiah from the LORD, after Nebuzaradan, captain of the bodyguard, had released him in Ramah, where he had found him a prisoner in chains, among the captives of Jerusalem and Judah who were being exiled to Babylon.

2. Le chef des gardes envoya chercher Jérémie et lui dit: "Yahweh, ton Dieu, avait annoncé ces malheurs contre ce lieu,

2. When the captain of the bodyguard took charge of Jeremiah, he said to him, "The LORD, your God, foretold the ruin of this place.

3. et il les a fait venir; il a exécuté ce qu'il avait dit, parce que vous avez péché contre Yahweh et que vous n'avez point obéi à sa voix, et ces choses vous sont arrivées.

3. Now he has brought about in deed what he threatened; because you sinned against the LORD and did not obey his voice, this fate has befallen you.

4. Maintenant voici que je t'ai dé-lié aujourd'hui des chaînes que tu avais aux mains. S'il te convient de venir avec moi à Babylone, viens, et j'aurai mes yeux sur toi; mais s'il ne te convient pas de venir avec moi à Babylone, laisse cela; regarde, tout le pays est devant toi; va où il te convient et où il te plaît d'aller."

4. And now, I am freeing you today from the fetters that bind your hands; if it seems good to you to come with me to Babylon, you may come: I will look after you well. But if it does not please you to come to Babylon, you need not come. See, the whole land is before you; go wherever you think good and proper";

5. Comme Jérémie tardait à s'en aller: "Retourne, ajouta-t-il, vers Godolias, fils d'Ahicam, fils de Saphan, que le roi de Babylone a établi sur les villes de Juda, et demeure avec lui parmi le peuple, ou bien va où il te plaira." - Puis le chef des gardes lui donna des vivres et des présents, et le congédia.

5. and then, before he left--"or go to Gedaliah, son of Ahikam, son of Shaphan, whom the king of Babylon has appointed ruler over the cities of Judah; stay with him among the people, or go wherever you please." The captain of the bodyguard gave him food and gifts and let him go.

6. Jérémie se rendit donc auprès de Godolias à Maspha, et il demeura avec lui parmi le peuple qu'on avait laissé dans le pays.

6. Jeremiah went to Gedaliah, son of Ahikam, in Mizpah, and stayed with him among the people left in the land.

7. Tous les chefs de troupes qui tenaient la campagne, eux et leurs hommes, ayant appris que le roi de Babylone avait éta-bli Godolias, fils d' Ahicam, gouverneur du pays, et qu'il lui avait confié les hom-mes, les femmes et les enfants, et ceux des pauvres du pays qu'on n'emmenait pas à Babylone,

7. When the army leaders who were still in the field with all their men heard that the king of Babylon had given Gedaliah, son of Ahikam, charge of the land, of men, women, and children, and of those poor who had not been led captive to Babylon,

8. ils se rendirent auprès de Godolias, à Maspha, savoir Ismaël, fils de Nathanias, Johanan et Jonathan, fils de Caréa, Séraïas, de Tanhumeth, les fils d'Ephoï, de Nétopha, et Jézonias, fils d'un Maacathite, eux et leurs hom-mes.

8. they came with their men to Gedaliah in Mizpah: Ishmael, son of Nethaniah; Johanan, son of Kareah; Seraiah, son of Tanhumeth; the sons of Ephai of Netophah; and Jezaniah of Beth-maacah.

9. Et Godolias, fils d'Ahicam, fils de Saphan, leur dit avec serment, à eux et à leurs hommes: "Ne craignez point de servir les Chaldéens; demeurez dans le pays, servez le roi de Babylone, et vous vous en trouverez bien.

9. Gedaliah, son of Ahikam, son of Shaphan, adjured them and their men not to be afraid to serve the Chaldeans: to stay in the land and submit to the king of Babylon, for their own welfare;

10. Pour, moi, je vais résider à Maspha pour être aux ordres des Chaldéens qui viendront vers vous; et vous, faites la récolte du vin, des fruits et de l'huile; mettez-les dans vos vases; et habitez les villes que vous occuperez."

10. saying that he himself would remain in Mizpah, as their intermediary with the Chaldeans who should come to them. They were to collect the wine, the fruit, and the oil, to store them in jars, and to settle in the cities they occupied.

11. Tous les Juifs qui étaient dans le pays de Moab et chez les fils d'Ammon, dans l'Idumée et dans tous ces pays-là, appri-rent que le roi de Babylone avait laissé un reste à Juda, et qu'il leur avait don-né pour gouverneur Godolias, fils d'Ahi-cam, fils de Saphan.

11. When the people of Judah in Moab, those among the Ammonites, those in Edom, and those in all other lands heard that the king of Babylon had left a remnant in Judah, and had appointed over them Gedaliah, son of Ahikam, son of Shaphan,

12. Alors tous les Juifs revinrent de tous les lieux où ils avaient été chassés, ils se rendirent au pays de Juda auprès de Godolias, à Maspha, et ils récoltèrent du vin et des fruits en abondance.

12. they all returned to the land of Judah from the places to which they had scattered. They went to Gedaliah at Mizpah and had a rich harvest of wine and fruit.

13. Mais Johanan, fils de Caréa, et tous les chefs de troupes qui tenaient la campagne, vinrent trouver Godolias à Maspha, et lui dirent:

13. Now Johanan, son of Kareah, and all the leaders of the armies in the field came to Gedaliah in Mizpah

14. "Ne sais-tu pas que Baalis, roi des fils d'Ammon, a envoyé Ismaël, fils de Nathanias, pour t'ôter la vie?" Mais Godolias, fils d'Ahicam, ne les crut point.

14. and asked him whether he did not know that Baalis, the king of the Ammonites, had sent Ishmael, son of Nethaniah, to assassinate him.

15. Et Johanan, fils de Caréa, parla en secret à Godolias à Maspha, et lui dit: "Permets que j'aille tuer Ismaël, fils de Nathanias, sans que personne le sache. Pourquoi t'ôterait-il la vie? Pourquoi tous les Juifs qui sont rassemblés vers toi seraient-ils dispersés?

15. But Gedaliah, son of Ahikam, would not believe them. Then Johanan, son of Kareah, said secretly to Gedaliah in Mizpah: "Let me go and kill Ishmael, son of Nethaniah; no one will know it. Why should he be allowed to kill you? All the Jews who have now rallied to you will be dispersed and the remnant of Judah will perish."

16. Godolias, fils d'Ahicam, dit à Johanan, fils de Caréa: "Ne fais point cela; car ce que tu dis au sujet d'Ismaël est faux."

16. Nevertheless, Gedaliah, son of Ahikam, answered Johanan, son of Kareah, "You shall do nothing of the kind; you have lied about Ishmael."
