1 Maccabées, 16

1. Jean monta de Gazara et vint annoncer à son père ce que faisait Cendé-bée.

1. John then went up from Gazara and told his father Simon what Cendebeus was doing.

2. Simon appela ses deux fils aînés, Judas et Jean, et leur dit : "Mes frères et moi, et la maison de non père, avons combattu les ennemis d'Israël depuis notre jeunesse jusqu'en ce jour, et nous avons souvent réussi par nos mains à sauver Israël.

2. Simon called his two oldest sons, Judas and John, and said to them: "I and my brothers and my father's house have fought the battles of Israel from our youth until today, and many times we succeeded in saving Israel.

3. Maintenant je suis devenu vieux, et vous, par la grâce divine, vous avez assez d'années; prenez ma place et celle de mon frère; allez com-battre pour notre nation, et que le se-cours du ciel soit avec vous!"

3. I have now grown old, but you, by the mercy of Heaven, have come to man's estate. Take my place and my brother's, and go out and fight for our nation; and may the help of Heaven be with you!"

4. Puis il choisit dans le pays vingt mille combat-tants et des cavaliers qui se mirent en marche contre Cendébée; ils campèrent la nuit à Modin.

4. John then mustered in the land twenty thousand warriors and horsemen. Setting out against Cendebeus, they spent the night at Modein,

5. S'étant levés le matin, ils s'avancèrent vers la plaine, et voici qu'une nombreuse armée de fantassins et de cavaliers vint à leur rencontre; le lit d'un torrent les séparait.

5. rose early, and marched into the plain. There, facing them, was an immense army of foot soldiers and horsemen, and between the two armies was a stream.

6. Jean avec ses hommes établît son camp en face d'eux. S'apercevant que ses troupes trem-blaient de traverser le torrent, il le fran-chit le premier; ce qu'ayant vu, ses guerriers le passèrent après lui.

6. John and his men took their position against the enemy. Seeing that his men were afraid to cross the stream, John crossed first. When his men saw this, they crossed over after him.

7. Il par-tagea son armée en deux corps, rangeant les cavaliers entre les fantassins ; or la cavalerie des ennemis était fort nom-breuse.

7. Then he divided his infantry into two corps and put his cavalry between them, for the enemy's horsemen were very numerous.

8. Ils firent retentir les trompettes, et Cendébée fut mis en fuite avec son armée; beaucoup tombèrent frappés à mort, et le reste chercha un refuge dans la forteresse.

8. They blew the trumpets, and Cendebeus and his army were put to flight; many of them fell wounded, and the rest fled toward the stronghold.

9. Alors Judas, frère de jean, fut blessé ; mais Jean poursui-vit les fuyards jusqu'à ce qu'il arriva à 10 Géant, que Cendébée avait fortifié. Les vaincus s'enfuirent jusqu'aux tours qui sont dans les champs d'Azot, et il livra la ville au feu. Deux mille d'entre eux pé-rirent, et Jean retourna en paix dans la Judée.

9. It was then that John's brother Judas fell wounded; but John pursued them until Cendebeus reached Kedron, which he had fortified.

10. Some took refuge in the towers on the plain of Azotus, but John set fire to these, and about two thousand of the enemy perished. He then returned to Judea in peace.

11. Ptolemy, son of Abubus, had been appointed governor of the plain of Jericho, and he had much silver and gold,

13. Son coeur s'enorgueillit; il aspi-ra à se rendre maître du pays, et il méditait des desseins perfides contre Simon et ses fils, pour les perdre.

13. But he became ambitious and sought to get control of the country. So he made treacherous plans to do away with Simon and his sons.

14. Or Simon, qui inspectait les villes de Judée, s'oc-cupant avec sollicitude de leur bien-être, descendit à Jéricho, lui, Mathathias son fils, et Judas, l'an cent soixante-dix-sept, au onzième mois; c'est le mois de Sabat.

14. As Simon was inspecting the cities of the country and providing for their needs, he and his sons Mattathias and Judas went down to Jericho in the year one hundred and seventy-seven, in the eleventh month (that is, the month Shebat).

15. Le fils d'Abobus les reçut par ruse dans une petite forteresse, nommée Doch, qu'il avait fait construire; il leur prépa-ra un grand festin et y tînt des hommes cachés.

15. The son of Abubus gave them a deceitful welcome in the little stronghold called Dok which he had built. While serving them a sumptuous banquet, he had his men hidden there.

16. Lorsque Simon fut ivre, ainsi que ses fils, Ptolémée se leva avec ses hommes, et, saisissant leurs armes, ils se précipitèrent sur Simon, dans la salle du festin, et le massacrèrent avec ses deux fils et quelques serviteurs.

16. Then, when Simon and his sons had drunk freely, Ptolemy and his men sprang up, weapons in hand, rushed upon Simon in the banquet hall, and killed him, his two sons, and some of his servants.

17. Il commit ainsi une grande trahison et rendît le mal pour le bien.

17. By this vicious act of treason he repaid good with evil.

18. Aussitôt Ptolémée écrivit au roi pour l'informer de l'événement, et lui demander d'envoyer des troupes à son aide, afin qu'il lui livrât le pays et les villes des Juifs.

18. Then Ptolemy wrote an account of this and sent it to the king, asking that troops be sent to help him and that the country be turned over to him.

19. Il dépêcha d'autres émissaires à Gazara pour tuer Jean, et expé-dia des lettres aux généraux, les convoquant près de lui, pour leur donner de l'argent, de l'or et des présents.

19. He sent other men to Gazara to do away with John. To the army officers he sent letters inviting them to come to him so that he might present them with silver, gold, and gifts.

20. Il en envoya d'autres encore pour occuper Jérusalem et la montagne du temple.

20. He also sent others to seize Jerusalem and the mount of the temple.

21. Mais un messager, ayant pris les devants, vint annoncer à Jean, dans Ga-zara, le meurtre de son père et de ses frères, et il ajouta ; "Il a aussi envoyé des assassins pour te tuer".

21. But someone ran ahead and brought word to John at Gazara that his father and his brothers had perished, and that Ptolemy had sent men to kill him also.

22. A cette nouvelle, Jean fut tout bouleversé; il se saisit des hommes qui venaient pour le tuer et il les fit mourir ; car il reconnut qu'ils avaient l'intention de le tuer.

22. On hearing this, John was utterly astounded. When the men came to kill him, he had them arrested and put to death, for he knew what they meant to do.

23. Now the rest of the history of John, his wars and the brave deeds he performed, his rebuilding of the walls, and his other achievements-
