Ezekiel, 25

1. The word of the LORD came again unto me, saying,

1. The word of Yahweh came to me in these terms,

2. Son of man, set thy face against the Ammonites, and prophesy against them;

2. "Turn towards the people of the Ammonites and prophesy against them.

3. And say unto the Ammonites, Hear the word of the Lord GOD; Thus saith the Lord GOD; Because thou saidst, Aha, against my sanctuary, when it was profaned; and against the land of Israel, when it was desolate; and against the house of Judah, when they went into captivity;

3. Say to them on my behalf: This is what Yahweh says: Because you mocked when my sanctuary was profaned, when the land of Israel was laid waste and the Judeans were exiled,

4. Behold, therefore I will deliver thee to the men of the east for a possession, and they shall set their palaces in thee, and make their dwellings in thee: they shall eat thy fruit, and they shall drink thy milk.

4. I am giving you over to the people of the East as their possession; they will pitch their camps and settle among you. They will eat your fruit and drink your milk.

5. And I will make Rabbah a stable for camels, and the Ammonites a couchingplace for flocks: and ye shall know that I [am] the LORD.

5. I will turn Rabbah into a pasture for camels and the towns of the Ammonites into a sheepfold and you will know that I am Yahweh."

6. For thus saith the Lord GOD; Because thou hast clapped [thine] hands, and stamped with the feet, and rejoiced in heart with all thy despite against the land of Israel;

6. Thus says Yahweh: "Because you clapped your hands and stamped your feet and danced for joy with an evil heart against the land of Israel,

7. Behold, therefore I will stretch out mine hand upon thee, and will deliver thee for a spoil to the heathen; and I will cut thee off from the people, and I will cause thee to perish out of the countries: I will destroy thee; and thou shalt know that I [am] the LORD.

7. I will stretch out my hand against you and hand you over as plunder to the nations. I will cut you off from the nations; no longer will you be numbered among them. I will destroy you and you will know I am Yahweh."

8. Thus saith the Lord GOD; Because that Moab and Seir do say, Behold, the house of Judah [is] like unto all the heathen;

8. Thus says Yahweh, "Because Moab said: 'Judah is like all the other nations,'

9. Therefore, behold, I will open the side of Moab from the cities, from his cities [which are] on his frontiers, the glory of the country, Bethjeshimoth, Baalmeon, and Kiriathaim,

9. I will leave Moab unprotected and destroy the towns which are her glory: Beth Jeshimoth, Baal Meon, Kiriathaim.

10. Unto the men of the east with the Ammonites, and will give them in possession, that the Ammonites may not be remembered among the nations.

10. I will give Moab along with the Ammonites as a possession to the people of the East so that the Ammonites will not be remembered among the nations.

11. And I will execute judgments upon Moab; and they shall know that I [am] the LORD.

11. When I will punish Moab, they will know I am Yahweh."

12. Thus saith the Lord GOD; Because that Edom hath dealt against the house of Judah by taking vengeance, and hath greatly offended, and revenged himself upon them;

12. Word of Yahweh, "Because Edom took revenge on Judah and was guilty in so doing, this is what

13. Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD; I will also stretch out mine hand upon Edom, and will cut off man and beast from it; and I will make it desolate from Teman; and they of Dedan shall fall by the sword.

13. Yahweh says: I will stretch out my hand against Edom, destroying men and animals. I will make it a ruins from Teman and let them be slain as far as Dedan.

14. And I will lay my vengeance upon Edom by the hand of my people Israel: and they shall do in Edom according to mine anger and according to my fury; and they shall know my vengeance, saith the Lord GOD.

14. I will put Israel in charge of my revenge against Edom. They will deal with Edom according to my wrath and my fury and Edom will experience my revenge" - word of Yahweh.

15. Thus saith the Lord GOD; Because the Philistines have dealt by revenge, and have taken vengeance with a despiteful heart, to destroy [it] for the old hatred;

15. Word of Yahweh, "Because the Philistines have taken revenge with an evil heart and because of their ceaseless hatred, thus says Yahweh:

16. Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD; Behold, I will stretch out mine hand upon the Philistines, and I will cut off the Cherethims, and destroy the remnant of the sea coast.

16. I intend to stretch out my hand against the Philistines; I will cut off the Kerethites and destroy the rest of the coast.

17. And I will execute great vengeance upon them with furious rebukes; and they shall know that I [am] the LORD, when I shall lay my vengeance upon them.

17. I will take terrible revenge and punish them in my wrath - then they will know I am Yahweh."

25:1-7 - The prophet Ezekiel pronounces judgment against Ammon, highlighting God's judgment on Israel's enemy nations. God's sovereignty is evident in targeting the nations that rejoiced at the fall of Jerusalem (see also Jeremiah 49:1-6 and Psalm 137:7-9).

25:8-11 - The judgment against Moab reveals God's wrath against those who mock God's people. Moab's sin is demonstrated in its pride and arrogance in despising the Jews. The punishment is a response to this presumption and lack of respect (see also Isaiah 16:6-14 and Amos 2:1-3).

Obadiah 1:11-12: "In the day you stood by, when foreigners took his wealth, when foreigners entered his gates and cast lots for Jerusalem, you were like one of them. You should not have rejoiced seeing your brother's misfortune on the day of his calamity; nor mocked the people of Judah in the day of their ruin; nor did he boast in the day of his affliction." - Obadiah condemns Edom for its attitude against Judah, similar to the condemnation of Edom in Ezekiel 25.

Psalms 137:7: "Remember, Lord, the Edomites and what they did when Jerusalem was destroyed, when they shouted, 'Destroy it! Demolish it to its foundations!'" - This psalm recalls Edom's attitude during the fall of Jerusalem, which is condemned in Ezekiel 25.
