Jeremiah 28 reports the dispute between the prophet Hananias and Jeremiah. Hananias states that God will break the yoke of Nebuchadnezzar and that the temple utensils that were taken to Babylon would be returned soon. However, Jeremiah warns that these words are false and that captivity in Babylon would last seventy years. Below are five verses related to the topics covered in Jeremiah 28:
Jeremiah 14:14: "Then the Lord said to me, The prophets falsely prophesy in my name; I did not send them, nor give them order, nor spoke to them; false vision, and guessing, and vanity, and the deceit of his heart is what they prophesy you. " The verse warns of the existence of false prophets, such as Hananias, who deceive the people with their false words in the name of God.
Deuteronomy 13:1-3: "If you raise a prophet, or dream dreamer, and to announce you a sign or prodigy, and succeed the sign or prodigy that you have spoken to you, saying, Let us go after other gods, That you have not known, and we serve them; Thou shalt not hear the words of this prophet or dream of dreams; for the Lord your God proves to you, to know if you love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul. " This verse emphasizes the importance of not following false prophets who seek to divert the people from true worship to God.
Jeremiah 14:15: "So thus saith the Lord about the prophets who prophesy in my name, without me having sent them, and say, neither sword or hunger there will be in this earth: these prophets will be consumed by sword and hunger." The verse shows that the false prophets who speak in the name of God without being sent by Him will suffer the consequences of their false words.
Matthew 24:24: "For false Christs and false prophets will be raised, and will make great signs and wonders; in such a way that if possible, they would even deceive the chosen ones." This verse warns of the existence of false prophets who make signs and wonders to deceive people, and states that even Christians can be deceived if they are not aware.
1 John 4:1: "Beloved, do not believe the whole Spirit, but prove whether the spirits are of God; for many false prophets have come out around the world." The verse urges Christians to test spirits to verify that messages and teachings are indeed from God, for many false prophets are acting in the world.
