Tobit, 1

1. Tobit was from the tribe and city of Naphtali (which is in the upper parts of Galilee above Asher, after the way, which leads to the west, that has on its left the city of Sephet).

1. Povijest Tobita, sina Tobielova, sina Ananielova, sina Aduelova, sina Gabaelova, potomka Asielova, iz plemena Naftalijeva -

2. Although he had been taken captive in the days of Shalmaneser, the king of the Assyrians, even in such a situation as captivity, he did not desert the way of truth.

2. koji je u vrijeme Šalmanasara, kralja asirskoga, bio odveden u sužanjstvo iz Tisbe, koja se nalazi južno od Kedeša Naftalijeva, u Gornjoj Galileji, nešto poviše Hasora.

3. So then, every day, all that he was able to obtain, he bestowed on his fellow captive brothers, who were from his kindred.

3. Ja, Tobit, hodio sam putovima istine i pravde svega svog života. Udijelio sam mnogo milostinje svojoj braæi i ljudima koji su došli sa mnom u Ninivu, zemlju Asiraca.

4. And, when he was among the youngest of any in the tribe of Naphtali, he showed not so much as any childish behavior in his work.

4. Dok sam se, u vrijeme svoje mladosti, još nalazio u domovini, u zemlji Izraelovoj, sve se pleme Naftalija, oca mojega, bilo udaljilo od doma Davidova i od Jeruzalema, izabrana meðu svim plemenima Izraelovim da bi u njemu prinosili svoje žrtve. Zbog toga je i bio podignut i posveæen Hram, Prebivalište Svevišnjega, za sva vjekovita pokoljenja.

5. And then, when all went to the golden calves which Jeroboam, king of Israel, had made, he alone fled from the company of them all.

5. Ali su se sva plemena okrenula, pa i pleme oca moga Naftalija, i prinosila su žrtve teletu što ga bijaše naèinio Jeroboam, kralj izraelski, u Danu, na brdima galilejskim.

6. Yet he continued on to Jerusalem, to the temple of the Lord, and there he adored the Lord God of Israel, offering faithfully all his first-fruits and his tithes.

6. Èesto sam tako, za svetkovinu, sam išao u Jeruzalem, da se poklonim, kako je propisano svemu Izraelu zauvijek, noseæi prvine i desetine plodina i vunu prve postrižine.

7. So then, in the third year, he administered all his tithes to new converts and to new arrivals.

7. Predavao sam sve to sveæenicima, sinovima Aronovim, za žrtvenik; od svih plodova davao sam desetinu sinovima Levijevim, koji vrše službu u Jeruzalemu, i prodavao odgovarajuæi dio druge desetine te utržak trošio svake godine u Jeruzalemu.

8. These and similar such things, even as a boy, he observed according to the law of God.

8. Najposlije, poklanjao sam treæu desetinu onima kojima je pripadala, kao što mi bijaše naredila Debora, moja baka, buduæi da sam iza oca ostao siroèe.

9. Truly, when he had become a man, he received as wife Anna of his own tribe, and he conceived a son by her, to whom he assigned his own name.

9. Kad postadoh zreo èovjek oženih se Anom, djevojkom iz svoga plemena, i dobih s njome sina Tobiju.

10. From his infancy, he taught him to fear God and to abstain from all sin.

10. Kad sam kao sužanj došao u Ninivu, sva moja braæa, a tako i moji suplemenici, blagovahu jela poganska;

11. Therefore, when, during the captivity, he had arrived with his wife and son at the city of Nineveh, with all his tribe,

11. a ja sam otklanjao da ih jedem.

12. (even though they all ate from the foods of the Gentiles,) he guarded his soul and never was contaminated with their foods.

12. Misli sam i srce upravljao Bogu svome,

13. And because he was mindful of the Lord with his whole heart, God gave him favor in the sight of Shalmaneser the king.

13. i zato me Svevišnji nagradi milošæu i naklonošæu Šalmanasara, komu postadoh upraviteljem dobara.

14. And he gave him the power to go wherever he would want, having the freedom to do whatever he wished.

14. Poslije toga išao sam u Mediju, gdje sam za nj kupovao sve do njegove smrti i ondje pohranih deset srebrenih talenata u Gabaela, Gabrijeva brata, u Ragesu, gradu medijskom.

15. Therefore, he continued on to all who were in captivity, and he gave them helpful advice.

15. Ali kada Šalmanasar umrije, zakralji se mjesto njega Sanherib, njegov sin. Ceste njegove postadoše opasne i ja više nisam mogao iæi u Mediju.

16. But when he had arrived at Rages, a city of the Medes, he had ten talents of silver, from that which he had been given in honor by the king.

16. U vrijeme Šalmanasarovo dijelio sam obilno milostinju svojoj braæi:

17. And when, in the midst of the great tumult of his kindred, he saw the destitution of Gabael, who was from his tribe, he loaned him, under a written agreement, the aforementioned weight of silver.

17. hranio sam gladne, odijevao gole, kad bih vidio koga od roda svoga ubijena pa baèena izvan zidina Ninive, brižno bih ga ukopao.

18. In truth, after a long time, Shalmaneser the king died, while Sennacherib his son reigned in his place, and he held a hatred for the sons of Israel.

18. Sahranjivao sam potajno one koje je ubio kralj Sanherib, natjeran na povlaèenje iz Judeje. Uistinu, ubio ih je mnogo u svome gnjevu: po nareðenju kraljevu tražili su mrtva tijela, ali ih ne mogahu naæi.

19. Every day, Tobit traveled though all his own people, and he consoled them, and he distributed to each one as much as he could from his resources.

19. Onda jedan iz Ninive ode kralju te me tuži da sam ja onaj koji ih pokopava; a ja se tada utajah. Doznavši da me traže kako bi me pogubili, uplašen se udaljih.

20. He nourished the hungry, and he supplied clothes to the naked, and he showed concern for the burial of the dead and of the slain.

20. Zaplijenili su mi sva dobra i ne osta mi ništa do žene Ane i sina Tobije.

21. And then, when king Sennacherib had returned from Judea, fleeing the scourge which God had caused all around him because of his blasphemy, and, being angry, he was slaughtering many from the sons of Israel, Tobit buried their bodies.

21. Nije prošlo ni pedeset dana kadli kralja ubiše njegova dva sina; poslije toga pobjegoše u planinu Ararat, a zakralji se mjesto njega sin mu Asarhadon. On na èelo državne riznice i èitave uprave postavi Ahikara, sina moga brata Anaela.

22. And when it was reported to the king, he ordered him to be slain, and he took away all his belongings.

22. Ahikar se zauze za me i ja se vratih u Ninivu. Ahikar je Sanheribu, kralju asirskom, bio peharnik, èuvar državnog peèata, upravitelj i riznièar. Asarhadon ga imenova na sve te dužnosti ponovo. A bijaše Ahikar moj bratiæ.

23. In truth, Tobit, fleeing with nothing but his son and his wife, was able to remain hidden because many loved him.

24. In truth, after forty-five days, the king was slain by his own sons,

25. and Tobit was able to return to his house, and all his resources were restored to him.
