1 Chronicles, 12

1. These are the men who rallied to David at Ziklag while he was still being kept away from Saul son of Kish; they were among the champions, the warriors.

1. Now these are the men who came to David at Ziklag, while he could not move about freely because of Saul the son of Kish; and they were among the mighty men who helped him in war.

2. They were equipped with bows and could sling stones or shoot arrows from the bow with either right hand or left. Of Saul's fellow-tribesmen from Benjamin:

2. They were bowmen, and could shoot arrows and sling stones with either the right or the left hand; they were Benjaminites, Saul's kinsmen.

3. Ahiezer the leader, and Joash, sons of Hassemar of Gibeah, Jeziel and Peleth, sons of Azmaveth, Berachah and Jehu of Anathoth,

3. The chief was Ahi-e'zer, then Jo'ash, both sons of Shema'ah of Gib'e-ah; also Je'zi-el and Pelet the sons of Az'maveth; Ber'acah, Jehu of An'athoth,

4. Ishmaiah of Gibeon, one of the champions in the Thirty and commander of the Thirty,

4. Ishma'iah of Gibeon, a mighty man among the thirty and a leader over the thirty; Jeremiah, Jaha'ziel, Joha'nan, Joz'abad of Gede'rah,

5. Jeremiah, Jahaziel, Johanan and Jozabed of Gederoth,

5. Elu'zai, Jer'imoth, Beali'ah, Shemari'ah, Shephati'ah the Har'uphite;

6. Eluzai, Jerimoth, Bealiah, Shemariah, Shephatiah of Hariph,

6. Elka'nah, Isshi'ah, Az'arel, Jo-e'zer, and Jasho'be-am, the Ko'rahites;

7. Elkanah, Isshiah, Azarel, Joezer and Jashobeam the Korahites,

7. and Joe'lah and Zebadi'ah, the sons of Jero'ham of Gedor.

8. Joelah, Zebadiah, sons of Jeroham of Gedor.

8. From the Gadites there went over to David at the stronghold in the wilderness mighty and experienced warriors, expert with shield and spear, whose faces were like the faces of lions, and who were swift as gazelles upon the mountains:

9. From the Gadites, some good, capable fighting men defected and came to David at the stronghold in the desert -- all skilled with shield and spear, fierce as lions and nimble as mountain gazelles.

9. Ezer the chief, Obadi'ah second, Eli'ab third,

10. Ezer was the leader, Obadiah second, Eliab third,

10. Mishman'nah fourth, Jeremiah fifth,

11. Mishmannah fourth, Jeremiah fifth,

11. Attai sixth, Eli'el seventh,

12. Attai sixth, Eliel seventh,

12. Joha'nan eighth, Elza'bad ninth,

13. Johanan eighth, Elzabad ninth,

13. Jeremiah tenth, Mach'bannai eleventh.

14. Jeremiah tenth, Machbannai eleventh.

14. These Gadites were officers of the army, the lesser over a hundred and the greater over a thousand.

15. These Gadites were the leaders of the troops, the least of them a match for a hundred men and the greatest a match for a thousand.

15. These are the men who crossed the Jordan in the first month, when it was overflowing all its banks, and put to flight all those in the valleys, to the east and to the west.

16. These were the men who once crossed the Jordan in the first month, when it had overflowed its banks and had driven out all the lowlanders to east and west.

16. And some of the men of Benjamin and Judah came to the stronghold to David.

17. Some of the Benjaminites and Judahites also joined David at the stronghold.

17. David went out to meet them and said to them, "If you have come to me in friendship to help me, my heart will be knit to you; but if to betray me to my adversaries, although there is no wrong in my hands, then may the God of our fathers see and rebuke you."

18. When David came forward to meet them, he responded to them by saying, 'If you have come to me with peaceful intent to help me, you will find me a good friend. But if it is to betray me to my enemies, seeing that I have done nothing wrong, may the God of our ancestors take note and condemn you.'

18. Then the Spirit came upon Ama'sai, chief of the thirty, and he said, "We are yours, O David; and with you, O son of Jesse! Peace, peace to you, and peace to your helpers! For your God helps you." Then David received them, and made them officers of his troops.

19. Then the Spirit invested Amasai the leader of the Thirty: 'We are your men, David; with you, son of Jesse! Peace be with you, peace be with you; peace be with those who help you! For your God has helped you!' And David accepted them, including them among his more senior officers.

19. Some of the men of Manas'seh deserted to David when he came with the Philistines for the battle against Saul. (Yet he did not help them, for the rulers of the Philistines took counsel and sent him away, saying, "At peril to our heads he will desert to his master Saul.")

20. Some Manassehites also defected to David as he was setting out with the Philistines to fight Saul. But he did not help the Philistines because, after consultation, their chiefs sent him away, saying, 'He will defect to his master Saul and it will cost us our heads!'

20. As he went to Ziklag these men of Manas'seh deserted to him: Adnah, Joz'abad, Jedi'a-el, Michael, Joz'abad, Eli'hu, and Zil'lethai, chiefs of thousands in Manas'seh.

21. He was on his way to Ziklag when these Manassehites deserted to him: Adnah, Jozabad, Jediael, Michael, Jozabad, Elihu, Zillethai, chiefs of thousands in Manasseh.

21. They helped David against the band of raiders; for they were all mighty men of valor, and were commanders in the army.

22. They helped David and his band, since they were all men of standing and became officers in the army.

22. For from day to day men kept coming to David to help him, until there was a great army, like an army of God.

23. Indeed reinforcements reached David day after day, so that his camp grew into a camp of prodigious size.

23. These are the numbers of the divisions of the armed troops, who came to David in Hebron, to turn the kingdom of Saul over to him, according to the word of the LORD.

24. These are the numbers of fully armed men who joined David at Hebron to transfer Saul's kingdom to him in accordance with the order of Yahweh:

24. The men of Judah bearing shield and spear were six thousand eight hundred armed troops.

25. Judahites carrying shield and spear: six thousand eight hundred fully armed warriors;

25. Of the Simeonites, mighty men of valor for war, seven thousand one hundred.

26. Simeonites; seven thousand one hundred champions valiant in war;

26. Of the Levites four thousand six hundred.

27. Levites: four thousand six hundred,

27. The prince Jehoi'ada, of the house of Aaron, and with him three thousand seven hundred.

28. in addition to Jehoiada, in command of the Aaronites, with three thousand seven hundred of these,

28. Zadok, a young man mighty in valor, and twenty-two commanders from his own father's house.

29. Zadok, a young and valiant champion, and twenty-two commanders of his family;

29. Of the Benjaminites, the kinsmen of Saul, three thousand, of whom the majority had hitherto kept their allegiance to the house of Saul.

30. Benjaminites: three thousand kinsmen of Saul, most of them hitherto in the service of the House of Saul;

30. Of the E'phraimites twenty thousand eight hundred, mighty men of valor, famous men in their fathers' houses.

31. Ephraimites: twenty thousand eight hundred valiant champions, men famous in their families;

31. Of the half-tribe of Manas'seh eighteen thousand, who were expressly named to come and make David king.

32. of the half-tribe of Manasseh: eighteen thousand men assigned by name to go and proclaim David king;

32. Of Is'sachar men who had understanding of the times, to know what Israel ought to do, two hundred chiefs, and all their kinsmen under their command.

33. Issacharites, sound judges of the times when Israel should take action, and the way to do it: two hundred chiefs and all their kinsmen under their command;

33. Of Zeb'ulun fifty thousand seasoned troops, equipped for battle with all the weapons of war, to help David with singleness of purpose.

34. Zebulunites: fifty thousand men fit for service, marshalled for battle, with warlike weapons of every kind, staunch-hearted auxiliaries;

34. Of Naph'tali a thousand commanders with whom were thirty-seven thousand men armed with shield and spear.

35. Naphtalites: a thousand commanders, and with them thirty-seven thousand men armed with shield and spear;

35. Of the Danites twenty-eight thousand six hundred men equipped for battle.

36. Danites: twenty-eight thousand six hundred men marshalled for battle;

36. Of Asher forty thousand seasoned troops ready for battle.

37. Asherites: forty thousand men fit for service, marshalled for battle;

37. Of the Reubenites and Gadites and the half-tribe of Manas'seh from beyond the Jordan, one hundred and twenty thousand men armed with all the weapons of war.

38. from Transjordan: a hundred and twenty thousand men of Reuben, Gad and the half-tribe of Manasseh, with warlike weapons of every kind.

38. All these, men of war, arrayed in battle order, came to Hebron with full intent to make David king over all Israel; likewise all the rest of Israel were of a single mind to make David king.

39. All these warriors in battle array came to David at Hebron with the firm determination of making David king of all Israel; and the rest of Israel, too, was of one mind in wanting to make David king.

39. And they were there with David for three days, eating and drinking, for their brethren had made preparation for them.

40. For three days they stayed there with David, eating and drinking, their fellow-tribesmen having made preparations for them;

40. And also their neighbors, from as far as Is'sachar and Zeb'ulun and Naph'tali, came bringing food on asses and on camels and on mules and on oxen, abundant provisions of meal, cakes of figs, clusters of raisins, and wine and oil, oxen and sheep, for there was joy in Israel.

41. their neighbours too, from as far away as Issachar and Zebulun and Naphtali, came bringing food on donkeys, camels, mules and oxen-supplies of flour, fig cakes, bunches of raisins, wine, oil, quantities of oxen and sheep -- for there was joy in Israel.
