Numbers, 32

1. Now, the Reubenites and Gadites owned very large herds of cattle. Having seen that the territories of Jazer and Gilead formed an ideal region for raising stock,

2. the Gadites and Reubenites went to Moses, the priest Eleazar and the leaders of the community, and said to them,

2. Darum kamen sie zu Mose, zu dem Priester Eleasar und zu den Anführern der Gemeinde und sagten:

3. 'The territory of Ataroth, Dibon, Jazer, Nimrah, Heshbon, Elealeh, Sebam, Nebo and Beon,

3. Atarot, Dibon, Jaser, Nimra, Heschbon, Elale, Sibma, Nebo und Beon,

4. which Yahweh has conquered before the advancing community of Israel, is ideal land for raising stock, and your servants are cattle breeders.

4. das Land, das der Herr für die Gemeinde Israel erobert hat, ist gut geeignet für die Viehhaltung und deine Knechte haben Viehherden.

5. So', they said, 'if you approve, give your servants this land for us to own; do not make us cross the Jordan.'

5. Sie sagten: Wenn wir dein Wohlwollen gefunden haben, dann gebe man dieses Land deinen Knechten als Besitz. Nimm uns nicht über den Jordan mit!

6. Moses said to the Gadites and Reubenites, 'Do you intend your brothers to go into battle while you stay here?

6. Mose antwortete den Gaditern und den Rubenitern: Sollen eure Brüder in den Krieg ziehen, während ihr hier sitzen bleibt?

7. Why are you discouraging the Israelites from crossing to the country which Yahweh has given them?

7. Warum wollt ihr den Israeliten den Mut nehmen, in das Land hinüberzuziehen, das der Herr für sie bestimmt hat?

8. Your fathers behaved in the same way when I sent them from Kadesh-Barnea to see the country,

8. Genauso haben es schon eure Väter gemacht, als ich sie von Kadesch-Barnea ausgeschickt hatte, damit sie das Land erkundeten.

9. for, having gone as far as the Valley of Eshcol and seen the country, they discouraged the Israelites from entering the country which Yahweh had given them.

9. Sie waren bis zum Traubental hinaufgekommen, hatten das Land gesehen und haben dann den Israeliten den Mut genommen, sodass sie das Land nicht mehr betreten wollten, das der Herr für sie bestimmt hatte.

10. Hence Yahweh's anger was aroused that day and he swore this oath,

11. "No man of twenty years and over, who left Egypt, shall set eyes on the country which I promised on oath to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob . . . , for they have not followed me absolutely,

11. Auf keinen Fall werden die, die aus Ägypten heraufgekommen sind, die Männer von zwanzig Jahren und darüber, das Land zu sehen bekommen, das ich Abraham, Isaak und Jakob mit einem Eid zugesichert habe; denn sie haben nicht treu zu mir gehalten.

12. except for Caleb son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite, and Joshua son of Nun: these indeed have followed Yahweh absolutely."

12. Nur der Kenasiter Kaleb, der Sohn Jefunnes, und Josua, der Sohn Nuns, waren ausgenommen, denn sie hielten treu zum Herrn.

13. Yahweh's anger being aroused by Israel, he made them wander in the desert for forty years, until the generation that offended Yahweh had all disappeared.

13. Der Zorn des Herrn entbrannte über Israel und er ließ sie vierzig Jahre lang in der Wüste umherirren, bis die ganze Generation ausgestorben war, die getan hatte, was dem Herrn missfiel.

14. And now you rise up in your father's place, offshoot of sinful stock, to increase Yahweh's burning anger with Israel even more!

14. Und jetzt kommt ihr anstelle eurer Väter, ihr Brut von Sündern, um den glühenden Zorn des Herrn auf Israel noch größer zu machen?

15. If you turn away from him, he will prolong the time spent in the desert, and you will bring about this entire people's ruin.'

15. Wenn ihr euch von ihm abwendet, wird er dieses ganze Volk noch länger in der Wüste lassen und ihr richtet das ganze Volk zugrunde.

16. They came to Moses and said, 'We should like to build sheepfolds here for our flocks and towns for our little ones.

16. Doch sie traten noch näher an Mose heran und sagten: Wir errichten hier Pferche für unser Vieh, unsere Schafe und Ziegen, und bauen Städte für unsere Kinder.

17. We ourselves will take up arms and lead the Israelites until we have brought them to the place appointed for them, while our little ones stay in the fortified towns to be safe from the local inhabitants.

17. Wir selbst aber rüsten uns und ziehen bewaffnet vor den Israeliten her, bis wir sie in ihr Land gebracht haben. Unterdessen werden unsere Kinder in den Städten wohnen, die zum Schutz gegen die Einwohner des Landes befestigt sind.

18. We will not return to our homes until every one of the Israelites has taken possession of his heritage.

18. Wir kehren nicht in unsere Häuser zurück, bevor jeder Israelit seinen Erbbesitz erhalten hat.

19. For we shall have no heritage with them on the other bank of the Jordan or beyond, since our heritage has fallen to us here, east of the Jordan.'

19. Wir verlangen auf der anderen Seite des Jordan keinen Erbbesitz wie sie, wenn wir diesseits, östlich des Jordan, unseren Erbbesitz bekommen.

20. Moses said to them, 'If you do as you have said, if you are prepared to fight before Yahweh,

20. Mose antwortete ihnen: Wenn ihr das tut, wenn ihr euch also vor den Augen des Herrn zum Kampf rüstet

21. and if all those of you who bear arms cross the Jordan before Yahweh, until he has driven all his enemies out before him,

21. und jeder von euch, der sich gerüstet hat, vor den Augen des Herrn den Jordan überschreitet und kämpft, bis er seine Feinde vertrieben hat

22. then, once the country has become subject to Yahweh, you may go back, and will have discharged your obligation to Yahweh and Israel, and Yahweh will consider this territory yours.

22. und das Land dem Herrn unterworfen ist, dann dürft ihr nachher umkehren und ihr seid gegenüber dem Herrn und Israel frei von weiteren Verpflichtungen. Dann soll dieses Land vor den Augen des Herrn euch als Eigentum gehören.

23. But if you do not, you will sin against Yahweh, and be sure your sin will find you out.

23. Wenn ihr das aber nicht tut, versündigt ihr euch gegen den Herrn. Dann habt ihr die Folgen für eure Sünde zu tragen; das müsst ihr wissen.

24. Build towns, then, for your little ones and folds for your flocks; but do what you have promised.'

24. Baut euch Städte für eure Kinder und errichtet Pferche für eure Schafe und Ziegen! Aber haltet auch, was ihr versprochen habt.

25. The Gadites and Reubenites said to Moses, 'Your servants will do as my lord directs.

25. Da sagten die Gaditer und die Rubeniter zu Mose: Deine Knechte werden tun, was mein Herr befiehlt.

26. Our little ones, our wives, our flocks and all our livestock will stay in the towns of Gilead,

26. Unsere Kinder, unsere Frauen und unsere Herden, unser ganzes Vieh, werden dort in den Städten von Gilead bleiben.

27. but your servants, each armed for war, will cross in Yahweh's name and fight, as my lord says.'

27. Alle deine Knechte aber werden sich rüsten und vor den Augen des Herrn über den Jordan in den Krieg ziehen, wie mein Herr befiehlt.

28. So Moses gave orders about them to the priest Eleazar, Joshua son of Nun, and the heads of families in the Israelite tribes.

28. Für sie gab Mose dem Priester Eleasar, Josua, dem Sohn Nuns, und den Familienhäuptern der israelitischen Stämme folgende Weisung:

29. Moses said to them, 'If the Gadites and Reubenites, all those under arms, cross the Jordan with you to fight in Yahweh's name, then, once the country has become subject to you, you will give them the territory of Gilead as theirs.

29. Er sagte zu ihnen: Wenn die Gaditer und die Rubeniter, zum Kampf gerüstet, vor den Augen des Herrn mit euch den Jordan überschreiten und wenn ihr das Land unterworfen habt, dann gebt ihnen das Land Gilead zum Besitz!

30. But if they will not cross with you under arms, they will receive their domains in Canaan with the rest of you.'

30. Wenn sie sich aber nicht rüsten und mit euch hinübergehen, dann sollen sie mitten unter euch in Kanaan eigenen Grund und Boden erhalten.

31. To this, the Gadites and Reubenites replied, 'What Yahweh has said to your servants, we shall do.

31. Die Gaditer und die Rubeniter antworteten: Was der Herr zu deinen Knechten sagt, werden wir tun.

32. Under arms, we shall cross in Yahweh's name into Canaan, so that ownership of our heritage on this side of the Jordan will be ours.'

32. Wir rüsten uns und ziehen vor den Augen des Herrn nach Kanaan hinüber, dann bleibt uns jenseits des Jordan unser Erbbesitz erhalten.

33. Moses then gave them -- the Gadites, the Reubenites and the half-tribe of Manasseh son of Joseph -- the kingdom of Sihon king of the Amorites and the kingdom of Og king of Bashan, the country and the towns within its territory, and the country's frontier-towns.

33. Da übergab Mose den Gaditern, den Rubenitern und dem halben Stamm des Manasse, des Sohnes Josefs, das Reich des Amoriterkönigs Sihon und das Reich Ogs, des Königs des Baschan, das Land mit seinen Städten und deren ganzen Umgebung, soweit das Land reichte.

34. The Gadites rebuilt Dibon, Ataroth, Aroer,

34. Die Gaditer erbauten die befestigten Städte Dibon, Atarot, Aroër,

35. Atroth-Shophan, Jazer, Jogbehah,

35. Atrot-Schofan, Jaser, Jogboha,

36. Beth-Nimrah and Beth-Haran as fortified towns with folds for the flocks.

36. Bet-Nimra und Bet-Haran und errichteten Schafpferche.

37. The Reubenites rebuilt Heshbon, Elealeh, Kiriathaim,

37. Die Rubeniter erbauten Heschbon, Elale, Kirjatajim,

38. Nebo and Baal-Meon (the names of which were altered), and Sibmah, giving new names to the towns which they rebuilt.

38. Nebo und Baal-Meon, denen sie andere Namen gaben, sowie Sibma. Sie gaben nämlich den Städten, die sie wieder aufbauten, neue Namen.

39. The descendants of Machir son of Manasseh went to Gilead. They conquered it and drove out the Amorites who were there.

39. Die Söhne Machirs, des Sohnes des Manasse, zogen nach Gilead und eroberten es. Sie vertrieben die Amoriter, die dort lebten.

40. Moses gave Gilead to Machir son of Manasseh, and he settled there.

40. Da übergab Mose Gilead dem Machir, dem Sohn des Manasse, und Machir ließ sich dort nieder.

41. Jair son of Manasseh went and seized their encampments, renaming them the Encampments of Jair.

41. Jaïr, der Sohn des Manasse, zog in den Kampf und eroberte die Zeltdörfer der Amoriter; er nannte sie Hawot-Jaïr (Zeltdörfer Jaïrs).

42. Nobah went and seized Kenat with its dependent townships, and called it Nobah after himself.

42. Nobach zog in den Kampf, eroberte Kenat und seine Tochterstädte und nannte es nach seinem eigenen Namen Nobach.
