Matthew, 23

1. Then addressing the crowds and his disciples Jesus said,

1. Darauf wandte sich Jesus an das Volk und an seine Jünger

2. 'The scribes and the Pharisees occupy the chair of Moses.

2. und sagte: Die Schriftgelehrten und die Pharisäer haben sich auf den Stuhl des Mose gesetzt.

3. You must therefore do and observe what they tell you; but do not be guided by what they do, since they do not practise what they preach.

3. Tut und befolgt also alles, was sie euch sagen, aber richtet euch nicht nach dem, was sie tun; denn sie reden nur, tun selbst aber nicht, was sie sagen.

4. They tie up heavy burdens and lay them on people's shoulders, but will they lift a finger to move them? Not they!

4. Sie schnüren schwere Lasten zusammen und legen sie den Menschen auf die Schultern, wollen selber aber keinen Finger rühren, um die Lasten zu tragen.

5. Everything they do is done to attract attention, like wearing broader headbands and longer tassels,

5. Alles, was sie tun, tun sie nur, damit die Menschen es sehen: Sie machen ihre Gebetsriemen breit und die Quasten an ihren Gewändern lang,

6. like wanting to take the place of honour at banquets and the front seats in the synagogues,

6. bei jedem Festmahl möchten sie den Ehrenplatz und in der Synagoge die vordersten Sitze haben,

7. being greeted respectfully in the market squares and having people call them Rabbi.

7. und auf den Straßen und Plätzen lassen sie sich gern grüßen und von den Leuten Rabbi (Meister) nennen.

8. 'You, however, must not allow yourselves to be called Rabbi, since you have only one Master, and you are all brothers.

8. Ihr aber sollt euch nicht Rabbi nennen lassen; denn nur einer ist euer Meister, ihr alle aber seid Brüder.

9. You must call no one on earth your father, since you have only one Father, and he is in heaven.

9. Auch sollt ihr niemand auf Erden euren Vater nennen; denn nur einer ist euer Vater, der im Himmel.

10. Nor must you allow yourselves to be called teachers, for you have only one Teacher, the Christ.

10. Auch sollt ihr euch nicht Lehrer nennen lassen; denn nur einer ist euer Lehrer, Christus.

11. The greatest among you must be your servant.

11. Der Größte von euch soll euer Diener sein.

12. Anyone who raises himself up will be humbled, and anyone who humbles himself will be raised up.

12. Denn wer sich selbst erhöht, wird erniedrigt, und wer sich selbst erniedrigt, wird erhöht werden.

13. 'Alas for you, scribes and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You shut up the kingdom of Heaven in people's faces, neither going in yourselves nor allowing others to go who want to.

13. Weh euch, ihr Schriftgelehrten und Pharisäer, ihr Heuchler! Ihr verschließt den Menschen das Himmelreich. Ihr selbst geht nicht hinein; aber ihr lasst auch die nicht hinein, die hineingehen wollen.

15. 'Alas for you, scribes and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You travel over sea and land to make a single proselyte, and anyone who becomes one you make twice as fit for hell as you are.

15. Weh euch, ihr Schriftgelehrten und Pharisäer, ihr Heuchler! Ihr zieht über Land und Meer, um einen einzigen Menschen für euren Glauben zu gewinnen; und wenn er gewonnen ist, dann macht ihr ihn zu einem Sohn der Hölle, der doppelt so schlimm ist wie ihr selbst.

16. 'Alas for you, blind guides! You say, "If anyone swears by the Temple, it has no force; but anyone who swears by the gold of the Temple is bound."

16. Weh euch, ihr seid blinde Führer! Ihr sagt: Wenn einer beim Tempel schwört, so ist das kein Eid; wer aber beim Gold des Tempels schwört, der ist an seinen Eid gebunden.

17. Fools and blind! For which is of greater value, the gold or the Temple that makes the gold sacred?

17. Ihr blinden Narren! Was ist wichtiger: das Gold oder der Tempel, der das Gold erst heilig macht?

18. Again, "If anyone swears by the altar it has no force; but anyone who swears by the offering on the altar, is bound."

18. Auch sagt ihr: Wenn einer beim Altar schwört, so ist das kein Eid; wer aber bei dem Opfer schwört, das auf dem Altar liegt, der ist an seinen Eid gebunden.

19. You blind men! For which is of greater worth, the offering or the altar that makes the offering sacred?

19. Ihr Blinden! Was ist wichtiger: das Opfer oder der Altar, der das Opfer erst heilig macht?

20. Therefore, someone who swears by the altar is swearing by that and by everything on it.

20. Wer beim Altar schwört, der schwört bei ihm und bei allem, was darauf liegt.

21. And someone who swears by the Temple is swearing by that and by the One who dwells in it.

21. Und wer beim Tempel schwört, der schwört bei ihm und bei dem, der darin wohnt.

22. And someone who swears by heaven is swearing by the throne of God and by the One who is seated there.

22. Und wer beim Himmel schwört, der schwört beim Thron Gottes und bei dem, der darauf sitzt.

23. 'Alas for you, scribes and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You pay your tithe of mint and dill and cummin and have neglected the weightier matters of the Law-justice, mercy, good faith! These you should have practised, those not neglected.

23. Weh euch, ihr Schriftgelehrten und Pharisäer, ihr Heuchler! Ihr gebt den Zehnten von Minze, Dill und Kümmel und lasst das Wichtigste im Gesetz außer Acht: Gerechtigkeit, Barmherzigkeit und Treue. Man muss das eine tun, ohne das andere zu lassen.

24. You blind guides, straining out gnats and swallowing camels!

24. Blinde Führer seid ihr: Ihr siebt Mücken aus und verschluckt Kamele.

25. 'Alas for you, scribes and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You clean the outside of cup and dish and leave the inside full of extortion and intemperance.

25. Weh euch, ihr Schriftgelehrten und Pharisäer, ihr Heuchler! Ihr haltet Becher und Schüsseln außen sauber, innen aber sind sie voll von dem, was ihr in eurer Maßlosigkeit zusammengeraubt habt.

26. Blind Pharisee! Clean the inside of cup and dish first so that it and the outside are both clean.

26. Du blinder Pharisäer! Mach den Becher zuerst innen sauber, dann ist er auch außen rein.

27. 'Alas for you, scribes and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You are like whitewashed tombs that look handsome on the outside, but inside are full of the bones of the dead and every kind of corruption.

27. Weh euch, ihr Schriftgelehrten und Pharisäer, ihr Heuchler! Ihr seid wie die Gräber, die außen weiß angestrichen sind und schön aussehen; innen aber sind sie voll Knochen, Schmutz und Verwesung.

28. In just the same way, from the outside you look upright, but inside you are full of hypocrisy and lawlessness.

28. So erscheint auch ihr von außen den Menschen gerecht, innen aber seid ihr voll Heuchelei und Ungehorsam gegen Gottes Gesetz.

29. 'Alas for you, scribes and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You build the sepulchres of the prophets and decorate the tombs of the upright,

29. Weh euch, ihr Schriftgelehrten und Pharisäer, ihr Heuchler! Ihr errichtet den Propheten Grabstätten und schmückt die Denkmäler der Gerechten

30. saying, "We would never have joined in shedding the blood of the prophets, had we lived in our ancestors' day."

30. und sagt dabei: Wenn wir in den Tagen unserer Väter gelebt hätten, wären wir nicht wie sie am Tod der Propheten schuldig geworden.

31. So! Your own evidence tells against you! You are the children of those who murdered the prophets!

31. Damit bestätigt ihr selbst, dass ihr die Söhne der Prophetenmörder seid.

32. Very well then, finish off the work that your ancestors began.

32. Macht nur das Maß eurer Väter voll!

33. 'You serpents, brood of vipers, how can you escape being condemned to hell?

33. Ihr Nattern, ihr Schlangenbrut! Wie wollt ihr dem Strafgericht der Hölle entrinnen?

34. This is why -- look -- I am sending you prophets and wise men and scribes; some you will slaughter and crucify, some you will scourge in your synagogues and hunt from town to town;

34. Darum hört: Ich sende Propheten, Weise und Schriftgelehrte zu euch; ihr aber werdet einige von ihnen töten, ja sogar kreuzigen, andere in euren Synagogen auspeitschen und von Stadt zu Stadt verfolgen.

35. and so you will draw down on yourselves the blood of every upright person that has been shed on earth, from the blood of Abel the holy to the blood of Zechariah son of Barachiah whom you murdered between the sanctuary and the altar.

35. So wird all das unschuldige Blut über euch kommen, das auf Erden vergossen worden ist, vom Blut Abels, des Gerechten, bis zum Blut des Zacharias, Barachias' Sohn, den ihr im Vorhof zwischen dem Tempelgebäude und dem Altar ermordet habt.

36. In truth I tell you, it will all recoil on this generation.

36. Amen, das sage ich euch: Das alles wird über diese Generation kommen.

37. 'Jerusalem, Jerusalem, you that kill the prophets and stone those who are sent to you! How often have I longed to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, and you refused!

37. Jerusalem, Jerusalem, du tötest die Propheten und steinigst die Boten, die zu dir gesandt sind. Wie oft wollte ich deine Kinder um mich sammeln, so wie eine Henne ihre Küken unter ihre Flügel nimmt; aber ihr habt nicht gewollt.

38. Look! Your house will be deserted,

38. Darum wird euer Haus (von Gott) verlassen.

39. for, I promise, you shall not see me any more until you are saying: Blessed is he who is coming in the name of the Lord!'

39. Und ich sage euch: Von jetzt an werdet ihr mich nicht mehr sehen, bis ihr ruft: Gesegnet sei er, der kommt im Namen des Herrn!
