Joshua, 5

1. When all the kings of the Amorites living to westward across the Jordan, and all the kings of the Canaanites living on the seaboard, heard that Yahweh had dried up the waters of the Jordan before the Israelites until they had crossed, their hearts failed and they lost all courage to resist the Israelites.

1. Alle Könige der Amoriter jenseits des Jordan im Westen und alle Könige der Kanaaniter am Meer hörten, dass der Herr das Wasser des Jordan vor den Augen der Israeliten austrocknen ließ, bis sie hinübergezogen waren; da zerschmolz ihr Herz und jedem stockte der Atem wegen der Israeliten.

2. At this time Yahweh said to Joshua, 'Make flint knives and circumcise the Israelites again (a second time).

2. Damals sagte der Herr zu Josua: Mach dir Steinmesser und ordne wieder eine Beschneidung der Israeliten an, eine zweite!

3. Joshua made flint knives and circumcised the Israelites on the Hill of Foreskins.

3. Da machte sich Josua Steinmesser und er beschnitt die Israeliten auf dem «Hügel der Vorhäute».

4. The reason why Joshua circumcised them was this. All the males of the people who had come out of Egypt of age to bear arms had died in the desert on their journey after leaving Egypt.

4. Josua nahm die Beschneidung vor, weil das ganze Volk, das aus Ägypten ausgezogen war, das heißt die Männer, alle Krieger, nach ihrem Auszug aus Ägypten auf dem Weg durch die Wüste gestorben waren.

5. Now, all the people who came out had been circumcised; but none of those born in the desert, during the journey, after leaving Egypt, had been circumcised;

5. Als das Volk auszog, waren alle beschnitten. Alle aber, die nach dem Auszug aus Ägypten unterwegs in der Wüste geboren wurden, hatte man nicht beschnitten.

6. for the Israelites walked the desert for forty years, until the whole nation had died out, that is, the men who had come out of Egypt of age to bear arms; they had not obeyed the voice of Yahweh, and Yahweh had sworn to them never to let them see the land which he had sworn to their ancestors that he would give us a land flowing with milk and honey.

6. Denn vierzig Jahre lang wanderten die Israeliten durch die Wüste. Schließlich war das ganze Volk, alle Krieger, die aus Ägypten ausgezogen waren, umgekommen, weil sie nicht auf die Stimme des Herrn gehört hatten. Der Herr hatte ihnen geschworen, er werde sie das Land nicht schauen lassen, das er ihren Vätern mit einem Eid zugesichert hatte, ein Land, in dem Milch und Honig fließen.

7. But in place of these he set their sons, and these were the ones whom Joshua circumcised: they were uncircumcised because they had not been circumcised during the journey.

7. Ihre Söhne, die der Herr an ihre Stelle treten ließ, beschnitt Josua; denn sie waren noch unbeschnitten, da man sie unterwegs nicht beschnitten hatte.

8. When the circumcising of the whole nation was finished, they stayed resting in the camp till they were well again.

8. Als nun das ganze Volk beschnitten war, blieb man an Ort und Stelle, im Lager, bis die Männer wieder gesund waren.

9. Yahweh then said to Joshua, 'Today I have taken the shame of Egypt away from you.' Hence, the place has been called Gilgal ever since.

9. Und der Herr sagte zu Josua: Heute habe ich die ägyptische Schande von euch abgewälzt. Darum nennt man diesen Ort bis zum heutigen Tag Gilgal (Wälzplatz).

10. The Israelites pitched their camp at Gilgal and kept the Passover there on the fourteenth day of the month, at evening, in the plain of Jericho.

10. Als die Israeliten in Gilgal ihr Lager hatten, feierten sie am Abend des vierzehnten Tages jenes Monats in den Steppen von Jericho das Pascha.

11. On the very next day after the Passover, they ate what the land produced, unleavened bread and roasted ears of corn.

11. Am Tag nach dem Pascha, genau an diesem Tag, aßen sie ungesäuerte Brote und geröstetes Getreide aus den Erträgen des Landes.

12. The manna stopped the day after they had eaten the produce of the land. The Israelites from that year onwards ate the produce of Canaan and had no more manna.

12. Vom folgenden Tag an, nachdem sie von den Erträgen des Landes gegessen hatten, blieb das Manna aus; von da an hatten die Israeliten kein Manna mehr, denn sie aßen in jenem Jahr von der Ernte des Landes Kanaan.

13. Now when Joshua was near Jericho, he looked up and saw a man standing in front of him, grasping a naked sword. Joshua walked towards him and said to him, 'Are you on our side or on that of our enemies?'

13. Als Josua bei Jericho war und Ausschau hielt, sah er plötzlich einen Mann mit einem gezückten Schwert in der Hand vor sich stehen. Josua ging auf ihn zu und fragte ihn: Gehörst du zu uns oder zu unseren Feinden?

14. He replied, 'On neither side. I have come now as the captain of the army of Yahweh.' Joshua fell on his face to the ground, worshipping him, and said, 'What has my Lord to say to his servant?'

14. Er antwortete: Nein, ich bin der Anführer des Heeres des Herrn. Ich bin soeben gekommen. Da warf sich Josua vor ihm zu Boden, um ihm zu huldigen, und fragte ihn: Was befiehlt mein Herr seinem Knecht?

15. The captain of the army of Yahweh answered Joshua, 'Take your sandals off your feet, for the place where you are standing is holy.' And Joshua did so.

15. Der Anführer des Heeres des Herrn antwortete Josua: Zieh deine Schuhe aus; denn der Ort, wo du stehst, ist heilig. Und Josua tat es.
