1. La première alliance avait aussi ses règlements relatifs au culte, et un sanctuaire terrestre.

1. Now (even) the first covenant had regulations for worship and an earthly sanctuary.

2. En effet, on a cons-truit un tabernacle, avec une partie intérieure, appelée le lieu saint, où étaient le chandelier, la table et les pains de proposition.

2. For a tabernacle was constructed, the outer one, in which were the lampstand, the table, and the bread of offering; this is called the Holy Place.

3. Derrière le second voile, se trouvait la partie du tabernacle appe-lée le Saint des saints, ayant un autel d'or pour les parfums et l'arche de l'al-liance toute recouverte d'or.

3. Behind the second veil was the tabernacle called the Holy of Holies,

4. Dans l'ar-che se trouvait une urne d'or renfermant la manne, la verge d'Aaron qui avait fleuri, et les tables de l'alliance.

4. in which were the gold altar of incense and the ark of the covenant entirely covered with gold. In it were the gold jar containing the manna, the staff of Aaron that had sprouted, and the tablets of the covenant.

5. Au des-sus étaient des chérubins de la gloire, couvrant de leur ombre le propitiatoire. Mais ce n'est pas ici le lieu de parler sur ce sujet en détail.

5. Above it were the cherubim of glory overshadowing the place of expiation. Now is not the time to speak of these in detail.

6. Or, ces choses étant ainsi disposées, les prêtres entrent en tout temps dans la partie antérieure du tabernacle, lors-qu'ils font le service du culte;

6. With these arrangements for worship, the priests, in performing their service, go into the outer tabernacle repeatedly,

7. le grand prêtre seul, une seule fois l'année, entre dans la seconde partie, mais avec du sang qu'il offre pour lui-même et pour les péchés du peuple.

7. but the high priest alone goes into the inner one once a year, not without blood that he offers for himself and for the sins of the people.

8. L'Esprit-Saint montre par là que le chemin du Saint des Saints n'a pas encore été ouvert, tant que subsiste le premier tabernacle.

8. In this way the holy Spirit shows that the way into the sanctuary had not yet been revealed while the outer tabernacle still had its place.

9. C'est une figure qui a rapport au temps présent; elle signifie que les oblations et les sacrifices offerts ne peuvent amener à Ia perfection, au point de vue de la conscience, celui qui rend ce culte.

9. This is a symbol of the present time, in which gifts and sacrifices are offered that cannot perfect the worshiper in conscience

10. Car avec les prescriptions relatives aux aliments, aux boissons et aux diverses ablutions, ce ne sont que des ordonnances charnelles, imposées seulement jusqu'à une époque de réformation.

10. but only in matters of food and drink and various ritual washings: regulations concerning the flesh, imposed until the time of the new order.

11. Mais le Christ ayant paru comme grand prêtre des biens à venir, c'est en passant par un tabernacle plus ex-cellent et plus parfait, qui n'est pas construit de main d'homme, c'est-à--dire, qui n'appartient pas à cette créa-tion-ci

11. But when Christ came as high priest of the good things that have come to be, passing through the greater and more perfect tabernacle not made by hands, that is, not belonging to this creation,

12. et ce n'est pas avec le sang des boucs et des taureaux, mais avec son propre sang, qu'il est entré une fois pour toutes dans le saint des Saints, après avoir acquis une rédemption éter-nelle.

12. he entered once for all into the sanctuary, not with the blood of goats and calves but with his own blood, thus obtaining eternal redemption.

13. Car si le sang des boucs et des taureaux, si la cendre d'une vache, dont on asperge ceux qui sont souillés, sanctifient de manière à procurer la pu-reté de la chair,

13. For if the blood of goats and bulls and the sprinkling of a heifer's ashes can sanctify those who are defiled so that their flesh is cleansed,

14. combien plus le sang du Christ qui, par l'Esprit éternel, s'est offert lui-même sans tache à Dieu, purifiera-t-il notre conscience des oeuvres mortes, pour servir le Dieu vivant?

14. how much more will the blood of Christ, who through the eternal spirit offered himself unblemished to God, cleanse our consciences from dead works to worship the living God.

15. Et c'est pour cela qu'il est médiateur d'une nouvelle alliance, afin que, sa mort avant eu lieu pour le pardon des transgressions commises sous la premiers alliance, ceux qui ont été appelés reçoivent l'héritage éternel qui leur a été promis.

15. For this reason he is mediator of a new covenant: since a death has taken place for deliverance from transgressions under the first covenant, those who are called may receive the promised eternal inheritance.

16. Car, là où il y a un testament, il est nécessaire que la mort du testateur intervienne;

16. Now where there is a will, the death of the testator must be established.

17. parce qu'un testament n'a son effet qu'en cas de mort, étant sans force lorsque le testateur est en vie.

17. For a will takes effect only at death; it has no force while the testator is alive.

18. Voilà pourquoi même la première alliance n'a pas été inaugu-rée sans effusion de sang.

18. Thus not even the first covenant was inaugurated without blood.

19. Moïse, après avoir proclamé devant tout le peuple tous les commandements selon la teneur de la Loi, prit le sang des taureaux et des boucs, avec de l'eau, de la laine écarlate et de l'hysope, et il fit l'aspersion sur le Livre lui-même et sur tout le peuple, en disant :

19. When every commandment had been proclaimed by Moses to all the people according to the law, he took the blood of calves (and goats), together with water and crimson wool and hyssop, and sprinkled both the book itself and all the people,

20. " Voici le sang de l'alliance que Dieu a contractée avec vous.

20. saying, "This is 'the blood of the covenant which God has enjoined upon you.'"

21. " II aspergea de même avec le sang le tabernacle et tous les ustensiles du culte. 22 Et d'après la Loi, pres-que tout se purifie avec du sang; et sans effusion de sang il n'y a pas de rémission.

21. In the same way, he sprinkled also the tabernacle and all the vessels of worship with blood.

22.

22. According to the law almost everything is purified by blood, and without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness.

23. Puisque les images des choses qui sont dans les cieux devaient être purifiées de cette manière, il était donc nécessaire que les choses célestes elles-mêmes fus-sent inaugurées par des sacrifices supérieurs à ceux-Ià.

23. Therefore, it was necessary for the copies of the heavenly things to be purified by these rites, but the heavenly things themselves by better sacrifices than these.

24. Car ce n'est pas dans un sanctuaire fait de main d'homme, image du véritable, que le Christ est entré: mais il est entré dans le ciel méme, afin de se tenir désormais pour nous présent devant la face de Dieu.

24. For Christ did not enter into a sanctuary made by hands, a copy of the true one, but heaven itself, that he might now appear before God on our behalf.

25. Et ce n'est pas pour s'offrir lui-même plusieurs fois, comme le grand prêtre entre chaque année dans le sanctuaire avec un sang qui n'est pas le sien :

25. Not that he might offer himself repeatedly, as the high priest enters each year into the sanctuary with blood that is not his own;

26. autrement il au-rait dû souffrir plusieurs fois depuis la fondation du monde; mais il s'est montré une seule fois, dans les derniers âges, pour abolir le péché par son sacrifice.

26. if that were so, he would have had to suffer repeatedly from the foundation of the world. But now once for all he has appeared at the end of the ages to take away sin by his sacrifice.

27. Et comme il est arrêté que les hommes meurent une seule fois, après quoi vient le jugement,

27. Just as it is appointed that human beings die once, and after this the judgment,

28. ainsi le Christ, après s'être offert une seule fois pour ôter les péchés de la multitude, apparaîtra une seconde fois, sans péché, pour donner le salut à ceux qui l'attendent.

28. so also Christ, offered once to take away the sins of many, will appear a second time, not to take away sin but to bring salvation to those who eagerly await him.
