Ecclésiaste (or Qohélet), 7

1. Une bonne renommée vaut mieux qu'un bon parfum, et le jour de la mort que le jour de la naissance.

1. A good name is better than good ointment, and the day of death than the day of birth.

2. Mieux vaut aller à la maison de deuil qu'aller à la maison de festin. Car dans la première apparaît la fin de tout homme, et le vivant y applique son c?ur.

2. It is better to go to the house of mourning than to the house of feasting, For that is the end of every man, and the living should take it to heart.

3. Mieux vaut la tristesse que le rire, car un visage triste fait du bien au c?ur.

3. Sorrow is better than laughter, because when the face is sad the heart grows wiser.

4. Le c?ur des sages est dans la maison de deuil, et le c?ur des insensés dans la maison de joie.

4. The heart of the wise is in the house of mourning, but the heart of fools is in the house of mirth.

5. Mieux vaut entendre la réprimande du sage que d'entendre la chanson des insensés.

5. It is better to hearken to the wise man's rebuke than to hearken to the song of fools;

6. Car semblable au pétillement des épines sous la chaudière est le rire des insensés: c'est encore là une vanité.

6. For as the crackling of thorns under a pot, so is the fool's laughter.

7. Car l'oppression rend insensé le sage et les présents corrompent le c?ur.

7. For oppression can make a fool of a wise man, and a bribe corrupts the heart.

8. Mieux vaut la fin d'une chose que son commencement; mieux vaut un esprit patient qu'un esprit hautain.

8. Better is the end of speech than its beginning; better is the patient spirit than the lofty spirit.

9. Ne te hâte pas dans ton esprit de t'irriter, car l'irritation repose dans le sein des insensés.

9. Do not in spirit become quickly discontented, for discontent lodges in the bosom of a fool.

10. Ne dis pas: "D'où vient que les jours anciens étaient meilleurs que ceux-ci?" Car ce n'est pas par sagesse que tu interroges à ce sujet.

10. Do not say: How is it that former times were better than these? For it is not in wisdom that you ask about this.

11. La sagesse est bonne avec un patrimoine, et profitable à ceux qui voient le soleil.

11. Wisdom and an inheritance are good, and an advantage to those that see the sun.

12. Car telle la protection de l'argent, telle la protection de la sagesse; mais un avantage du savoir, c'est que la sagesse fait vivre ceux qui la possèdent.

12. For the protection of wisdom is as the protection of money; and the advantage of knowledge is that wisdom preserves the life of its owner.

13. Regarde l'?uvre de Dieu: qui pourra redresser ce qu'il a courbé?

13. Consider the work of God. Who can make straight what he has made crooked?

14. Au jour du bonheur, sois joyeux, et au jour du malheur, réfléchis: Dieu a fait l'un comme l'autre, afin que l'homme ne découvre point ce qui doit lui arriver.

14. On a good day enjoy good things, and on an evil day consider: Both the one and the other God has made, so that man cannot find fault with him in anything.

15. Tout ceci, je l'ai vu au jour de ma vanité: il y a tel juste qui périt dans sa justice, et il y a tel méchant qui prolonge sa vie dans sa méchanceté.

15. I have seen all manner of things in my vain days: a just man perishing in his justice, and a wicked one surviving in his wickedness.

16. Ne sois pas juste à l'excès, et ne te montre pas sage outre mesure: pourquoi voudrais-tu te détruire?

16. "Be not just to excess, and be not overwise, lest you be ruined.

17. Ne sois pas méchant à l'excès, et ne sois pas insensé: pourquoi voudrais-tu mourir avant ton temps?

17. Be not wicked to excess, and be not foolish. Why should you die before your time?"

18. Il est bon que tu retiennes ceci, et que tu ne relâches pas ta main de cela, car celui qui craint Dieu évite tous les excès.

18. It is good to hold to this rule, and not to let that one go; but he who fears God will win through at all events.

19. La sagesse donne au sage plus de force que n'en possèdent dix chefs qui sont dans la ville. 20.Car il n'y a pas sur terre d'homme juste qui fasse le bien sans jamais pécher.

19. Wisdom is a better defense for the wise man than would be ten princes in the city,

20. yet there is no man on earth so just as to do good and never sin.

21. Ne fais pas non plus attention à toutes les paroles qui se disent, de peur que tu n'entendes ton serviteur te maudire;

21. Do not give heed to every word that is spoken lest you hear your servant speaking ill of you,

22. Car ton c?ur sait que bien des fois aussi tu as maudit les autres.

22. for you know in your heart that you have many times spoken ill of others.

23. J'ai reconnu vrai tout cela par la sagesse; J'ai dit: "Je veux être sage!" Mais la sagesse est restée loin de moi.

23. All these things I probed in wisdom. I said, "I will acquire wisdom"; but it was beyond me.

24. Ce qui arrive est lointain, profond, profond: qui peut l'atteindre?

24. What exists is far-reaching; it is deep, very deep: who can find it out?

25. Je me suis appliqué et mon c?ur a cherché à connaître, à sonder et à poursuivre la sagesse et la raison des choses, et j'ai reconnu que la méchanceté est une démence, et qu'une conduite folle est un délire.

25. I turned my thoughts toward knowledge; I sought and pursued wisdom and reason, and I recognized that wickedness is foolish and folly is madness.

26. Et j'ai trouvé plus amère que la mort, la femme dont le c?ur est un piège et un filet, et dont les mains sont des liens; Celui qui est agréable à Dieu lui échappe, mais le pécheur sera enlacé par elle.

26. More bitter than death I find the woman who is a hunter's trap, whose heart is a snare and whose hands are prison bonds. He who is pleasing to God will escape her, but the sinner will be entrapped by her.

27. Vois, j'ai trouvé ceci, dit l'Écclésiaste, en considérant les choses une à une pour en découvrir la raison, que mon âme a constamment cherchée, sans que je l'aie trouvée: J'ai trouvé un homme entre mille, mais je n'ai pas trouvé une femme dans le même nombre.

27. Behold, this have I found, says Qoheleth, adding one thing to another that I might discover the answer

28. Seulement, vois, j'ai trouvé ceci: c'est que Dieu a fait l'homme droit, mais eux cherchent beaucoup de subtilités.

28. which my soul still seeks and has not found: One man out of a thousand have I come upon, but a woman among them all I have not found.

29. Behold, only this have I found out: God made mankind straight, but men have had recourse to many calculations.
