Daniel, 14

1. Or Daniel mangeait à la table du roi, et il était honoré plus que tous ses autres amis.

1. After King Astyages was laid with his fathers, Cyrus the Persian succeeded to his kingdom.

2. Il y avait chez les Babyloniens une idole nommée Bel; on dépensait chaque jour pour elle douze artabes de farine, quarante brebis et six métrètes de vin.

2. Daniel was the king's favorite and was held in higher esteem than any of the friends of the king.

3. Le roi aussi la vénérait, et il allait chaque jour l'adorer; mais Daniel adorait son Dieu.

3. The Babylonians had an idol called Bel, and every day they provided for it six barrels of fine flour, forty sheep, and six measures of wine.

4. Le roi lui dit : " Pourquoi n'adores-tu pas Bel? " Il lui ré-pondit :" Parce que je ne vénère pas des idoles faites de main d'homme, mais le Dieu vivant qui a fait le ciel et la terre et qui a puissance sur toute chair. "

4. The king worshiped it and went every day to adore it; but Daniel adored only his God.

5. Le roi lui dit : " Est-ce que Bel ne te sem-ble pas un être vivant? Ne vois-tu pas tout ce qu'il mange et boit chaque jour?"

5. When the king asked him, "Why do you not adore Bel?" Daniel replied, "Because I worship not idols made with hands, but only the living God who made heaven and earth and has dominion over all mankind."

6. Daniel répondit en souriant : " Ne t'y trompes pas, ô roi ; car il est de boue en dedans et d'airain à l'extérieur, et il n'a jamais rien mangé. "

6. Then the king continued, "You do not think Bel is a living god? Do you not see how much he eats and drinks every day?"

7. Le roi irrité ap-pela les prêtres de Bel et leur dit : " Si vous ne me dites pas qui est celui qui mange ces offrandes, vous mourrez ;

7. Daniel began to laugh. "Do not be deceived, O king," he said; "it is only clay inside and bronze outside; it has never taken any food or drink."

8. mais si vous me démontrez que c'est Bel qui les mange, Daniel mourra, parce qu'il a blasphémé contre Bel."

8. Enraged, the king called his priests and said to them, "Unless you tell me who it is that consumes these provisions, you shall die.

9. Or il y avait soixante-dix prêtres de Bel, sans compter leurs femmes et leurs enfants. Et le roi se rendit avec Daniel au temple de Bel.

9. But if you can show that Bel consumes them, Daniel shall die for blaspheming Bel." Daniel said to the king, "Let it be as you say!"

10. Les prêtres de Bel dirent " Voici que nous allons sortir; toi, ô roi, fais placer les mets et apporter le vin, après l'avoir mélangé; puis ferme la porte, et scelle-la avec ton anneau.

10. There were seventy priests of Bel, besides their wives and children. When the king went with Daniel into the temple of Bel,

11. Et quand tu entreras demain matin, si tu ne trouves pas que tout a été mangé par Bel, nous mourrons ; ou bien ce sera Daniel, qui a menti contre tous. "

11. the priests of Bel said, "See, we are going to leave. Do you, O king, set out the food and prepare the wine; then shut the door and seal it with your ring.

12. Ils songeaient qu'ils avaient fait sous la table une ouverture secrète, par laquelle ils s'introduisaient toujours et verraient consommer les offrandes

12. If you do not find that Bel has eaten it all when you return in the morning, we are to die; otherwise Daniel shall die for his lies against us."

13. Lorsqu'ils furent sortis et que le roi eut fait mettre les aliments devant Bel, Daniel commanda à ses serviteurs d'ap-porter de la cendre, et il la répandirent par tout le temple en présence du roi seul puis ils sortirent, fermèrent la porte en la scellant avec l'anneau du roi, et s'en allèrent.

13. They were not perturbed, because under the table they had made a secret entrance through which they always came in to consume the food.

14. Pendant la nuit, les prêtres entrèrent selon leur coutume avec leurs femmes et leurs enfants, et ils mangèrent et burent tout ce qui était là.

14. After they departed the king set the food before Bel, while Daniel ordered his servants to bring some ashes, which they scattered through the whole temple; the king alone was present. Then they went outside, sealed the closed door with the king's ring, and departed.

15. Le roi se leva dès le point du jour, et Daniel avec lui. Le roi dit:

15. The priests entered that night as usual, with their wives and children, and they ate and drank everything.

16. " Les sceaux sont-ils intacts, Daniel? " Celui-ci répondit : " Ils sont intacts, ô roi. "

16. Early the next morning, the king came with Daniel.

17. Dès qu'il eut ouvert la porte et regardé la table, le roi s'écria à haute voix : " Tu es grand, ô Bel, et il n'y a pas la moindre tromperie en toi. "

17. "Are the seals unbroken, Daniel?" he asked. And Daniel answered, "They are unbroken, O king."

18. Daniel se prit à rire et, retenant le roi pour qu'il n'entrât pas plus avant, il lui dit : " Regarde le pavé, considère de qui sont ces pas. "

18. As soon as he had opened the door, the king looked at the table and cried aloud, "Great you are, O Bel; there is no trickery in you."

19. Le roi dit : " je vois des pas d'hommes, de femmes et d'enfants ; " et le roi entra dans une grande colère.

19. But Daniel laughed and kept the king from entering. "Look at the floor," he said; "whose footprints are these?"

20. Alors il fit saisir les prêtres, leurs femmes et leurs enfants, et ils lui montrèrent les portes secrètes par où ils s'introduisaient et venaient manger ce qui était sur la ta-ble.

20. "I see the footprints of men, women, and children!" said the king.

21. Il les fit mettre à mort et livra Bel au pouvoir de Daniel, qui le détruisit ainsi que son temple.

21. The angry king arrested the priests, their wives, and their children. They showed him the secret door by which they used to enter to consume what was on the table.

22. Il y avait aussi un grand dragon, et les Babyloniens le vénéraient.

22. He put them to death, and handed Bel over to Daniel, who destroyed it and its temple.

23. Le roi dit à Daniel : " Diras-tu encore que celui-ci est d'airain? Vois, il vit,il mange et boit. Maintenant, tu ne pourras pas dire que ce n'est pas un dieu vivant. "

23. There was a great dragon which the Babylonians worshiped.

24. Daniel répondit : " J'adore le Seigneur, mon Dieu, car lui est un Dieu vivant; mais celui-ci n'est point un dieu vivant.

24. "Look!" said the king to Daniel, "you cannot deny that this is a living god, so adore it."

25. Toi, ô roi, donne-moi la permission, et je tuerai ce dragon sans épée ni bâton. "

25. But Daniel answered, "I adore the Lord, my God, for he is the living God.

26. Le roi dit : " Je te la donne. " Alors Daniel prit de la poix, de la graisse et des poils, fit bouillir le tout ensemble et en fit des boules qu'il jeta dans la gueule du dragon. Et le dragon creva. Et il dit " Voilà celui que vous vénériez! "

26. Give me permission, O king, and I will kill this dragon without sword or club." "I give you permission," the king said.

27. Les Babyloniens, l'ayant appris, furent saisis d'une vive indigna!ion; ils se rassemblèrent contre le roi et dirent: " Le roi est devenu juif ; il a détruit Bel, fait mourir le dragon et massacrer les prêtres. "

27. Then Daniel took some pitch, fat, and hair; these he boiled together and made into cakes. He put them into the mouth of the dragon, and when the dragon ate them, he burst asunder. "This," he said, "is what you worshiped."

28. Ils vinrent donc trouver le roi et lui dirent: " Livre-nous Daniel ; sinon, nous te ferons mourir, toi et ta maison. "

28. When the Babylonians heard this, they were angry and turned against the king. "The king has become a Jew," they said; "he has destroyed Bel, killed the dragon, and put the priests to death."

29. Le roi vit qu'ils se jetaient sur lui avec violence ; cédant à la nécessité, il leur livra Da-niel.

29. They went to the king and demanded: "Hand Daniel over to us, or we will kill you and your family."

30. Ils le jetèrent dans la fosse aux lions, et il y demeura six jours.

30. When he saw himself threatened with violence, the king was forced to hand Daniel over to them.

31. Dans la fosse, il y avait sept lions, et on leur don-nait chaque jour deux corps et deux bre-bis ; mais alors on ne leur donna pas cette pâture, afin qu'ils dévorassent Daniel.

31. They threw Daniel into a lions' den, where he remained six days.

32. Or le prophète Habacuc était en Judée ; après avoir fait cuire une bouil-lie et émietté du pain dans un vase, il allait aux champs le porter à ses mois-sonneurs.

32. In the den were seven lions, and two carcasses and two sheep had been given to them daily. But now they were given nothing, so that they would devour Daniel.

33. L'ange du Seigneur dit à Habacuc : " Porte le repas que tu tiens à Babylone, à Daniel, qui est dans la fosse aux lions. "

33. In Judea there was a prophet, Habakkuk; he mixed some bread in a bowl with the stew he had boiled, and was going to bring it to the reapers in the field,

34. Habacuc dit : " Seigneur, je n'ai jamais vu Babylone, et je ne connais pas la fosse. "

34. when an angel of the Lord told him, "Take the lunch you have to Daniel in the lions' den at Babylon."

35. Alors l'ange le prit par le haut de la tête, le porta, par les cheveux de sa tête, et le déposa à Babylone, au-dessus de la fosse, avec toute l'agilité de sa nature spirituelle.

35. But Habakkuk answered, "Babylon, sir, I have never seen, and I do not know the den!"

36. Et Habacuc cria : " Daniel, serviteur de Dieu, prends le repas que Dieu t'envoie."

36. The angel of the Lord seized him by the crown of his head and carried him by the hair; with the speed of the wind, he set him down in Babylon above the den.

37. Daniel répondit : " Vous vous êtes, en effet, souvenu de moi, ô Dieu, et vous n'avez pas abandonné ceux qui vous aiment. "

37. "Daniel, Daniel," cried Habakkuk, "take the lunch God has sent you."

38. Et Daniel se leva et mangea. Et l'ange du Seigneur remit aussitôt Habacuc en son lieu.

38. "You have remembered me, O God," said Daniel; "you have not forsaken those who love you."

39. Le septième jour, le roi vint pour pleurer Daniel ; étant venu vers la fosse, il regarda, et voici que Daniel était assis au milieu des lions.

39. While Daniel began to eat, the angel of the Lord at once brought Habakkuk back to his own place.

40. Il cria à haute voix et dit : " Vous êtes grand, Seigneur, Dieu de Daniel, et il n'y en a point d'autre que vous ! " Et il le retira de la fosse aux lions.

40. On the seventh day the king came to mourn for Daniel. As he came to the den and looked in, there was Daniel, sitting there!

41. Puis il fit jeter dans la fosse ceux qui avaient voulu le perdre, et ils furent dévorés sous ses yeux, en un instant. Alors le roi dit :

41. The king cried aloud, "You are great, O Lord, the God of Daniel, and there is no other besides you!"

42. " Que tous les habitants de la terre entière craignent le Dieu de Daniel, car c'est lui qui est le Sauveur, qui fait des signes et des prodiges sur la terre, lui qui a délivré Daniel de la fosse aux lions ! "

42. Daniel he took out, but those who had tried to destroy him he threw into the den, and they were devoured in a moment before his eyes.
