Actes des Apôtres, 17

1. Ayant fait route par Amphipolis et Apollonie, ils vinrent à Thessalonique, où était une synagogue des Juifs.

1. When they took the road through Amphipolis and Apollonia, they reached Thessalonica, where there was a synagogue of the Jews.

2. Selon sa coutume, Paul entra chez eux et, pendant trois sabbats, il discourut avec eux en partant des Ecritures,

2. Following his usual custom, Paul joined them, and for three sabbaths he entered into discussions with them from the scriptures,

3. expliquant et établissant que le Messie devait souffrir et ressusciter d'entre les morts, et que : " C'est lui, le Christ, Jésus que je vous annonce. "

3. expounding and demonstrating that the Messiah had to suffer and rise from the dead, and that "This is the Messiah, Jesus, whom I proclaim to you."

4. Quelques-uns d'entre eux furent persuadés, et ils devinrent le lot de Paul et de Silas, ainsi qu'une grande masse de Grecs craignant Dieu et un assez grand nombre de femmes de premier rang.

4. Some of them were convinced and joined Paul and Silas; so, too, a great number of Greeks who were worshipers, and not a few of the prominent women.

5. Mais les Juifs, piqués de jalousie, ramassèrent quelques mauvais sujets de la lie du peuple, provoquèrent des attroupements, et répandirent l'agitation dans la ville. Puis, se présentant à la maison de Jason, ils cherchaient (Paul et Silas) pour les amener devant l'assemblée du peuple.

5. But the Jews became jealous and recruited some worthless men loitering in the public square, formed a mob, and set the city in turmoil. They marched on the house of Jason, intending to bring them before the people's assembly.

6. Mais, ne les ayant pas trouvés, ils traînèrent Jason et quelques frères devant les politarques, en criant : " Ces gens qui ont bouleversé le monde sont aussi venus ici,

6. When they could not find them, they dragged Jason and some of the brothers before the city magistrates, shouting, "These people who have been creating a disturbance all over the world have now come here,

7. et Jason les a reçus. Ils sont tous en contravention avec les édits de César, disant qu'il y a un autre roi, Jésus. "

7. and Jason has welcomed them. They all act in opposition to the decrees of Caesar and claim instead that there is another king, Jesus."

8. Ils mirent ainsi en émoi la foule et les politarques qui entendaient cela.

8. They stirred up the crowd and the city magistrates who, upon hearing these charges,

9. (Ceux-ci), après avoir reçu caution de Jason et des autres, les laissèrent aller.

9. took a surety payment from Jason and the others before releasing them.

10. Les frères, aussitôt, firent partir de nuit Paul et Silas pour Bérée. Quand ils (y) furent arrivés, ils se rendirent à la synagogue des Juifs.

10. The brothers immediately sent Paul and Silas to Beroea during the night. Upon arrival they went to the synagogue of the Jews.

11. Ces derniers avaient des sentiments plus nobles que ceux de Thessalonique; ils reçurent la parole avec un entier empressement, examinant chaque jour les Ecritures (pour voir) s'il en était bien ainsi.

11. These Jews were more fair-minded than those in Thessalonica, for they received the word with all willingness and examined the scriptures daily to determine whether these things were so.

12. Beaucoup d'entre eux crurent donc, ainsi que des femmes grecques de qualité et des hommes en assez grand nombre.

12. Many of them became believers, as did not a few of the influential Greek women and men.

13. Mais, quand les Juifs de Thessalonique surent qu'à Bérée aussi la parole de Dieu avait été annoncée par Paul, ils vinrent agiter et troubler là encore les populations.

13. But when the Jews of Thessalonica learned that the word of God had now been proclaimed by Paul in Beroea also, they came there too to cause a commotion and stir up the crowds.

14. Alors aussitôt les frères firent partir Paul pour aller jusqu'à la mer; mais Silas et Timothée restèrent là.

14. So the brothers at once sent Paul on his way to the seacoast, while Silas and Timothy remained behind.

15. Quant à ceux qui conduisaient Paul, ils le menèrent jusqu'à Athènes; puis, ayant pris ordre pour Silas et Timothée de venir à lui au plus tôt, ils s'en retournèrent.

15. After Paul's escorts had taken him to Athens, they came away with instructions for Silas and Timothy to join him as soon as possible.

16. Pendant que Paul les attendait à Athènes, il sentait en son âme une vive indignation au spectacle de la ville remplie d'idoles.

16. While Paul was waiting for them in Athens, he grew exasperated at the sight of the city full of idols.

17. Il discutait donc dans la synagogue avec les Juifs et les hommes craignant Dieu, et tous les jours sur l'Agora avec ceux qui se trouvaient là.

17. So he debated in the synagogue with the Jews and with the worshipers, and daily in the public square with whoever happened to be there.

18. Or, quelques-uns aussi des philosophes épicuriens et stoïciens conféraient avec lui; et les uns disaient : " Que veut dire ce discoureur? " D'autres, parce qu'il prêchait Jésus et la résurrection, (disaient) : " Ce paraît être un annonceur de divinités étrangères. "

18. Even some of the Epicurean and Stoic philosophers engaged him in discussion. Some asked, "What is this scavenger trying to say?" Others said, "He sounds like a promoter of foreign deities," because he was preaching about 'Jesus' and 'Resurrection.'

19. Et l'ayant pris, ils le menèrent sur l'Aréopage, disant : " Pourrions-nous savoir quelle est cette nouvelle doctrine que tu enseignes?

19. They took him and led him to the Areopagus and said, "May we learn what this new teaching is that you speak of?

20. Car tu nous fais entendre des choses étranges; nous voudrions donc savoir ce que cela peut être. "

20. For you bring some strange notions to our ears; we should like to know what these things mean."

21. Tous les Athéniens et les étrangers résidant (chez eux) ne passaient leur temps qu'à dire ou à écouter les dernières nouvelles.

21. Now all the Athenians as well as the foreigners residing there used their time for nothing else but telling or hearing something new.

22. Paul, debout au milieu de l'Aréopage, dit : " Athéniens, en tout je vous vois éminemment religieux.

22. Then Paul stood up at the Areopagus and said: "You Athenians, I see that in every respect you are very religious.

23. Car, passant et regardant ce qui est de votre culte, j'ai trouvé même un autel avec cette inscription : " Au dieu inconnu. " Ce que vous adorez sans le connaître, c'est ce que je vous annonce.

23. For as I walked around looking carefully at your shrines, I even discovered an altar inscribed, 'To an Unknown God.' What therefore you unknowingly worship, I proclaim to you.

24. Le Dieu qui a fait le monde et tout ce qu'il renferme, étant Seigneur du ciel et de la terre, n'habite point dans des temples faits de main d'homme,

24. The God who made the world and all that is in it, the Lord of heaven and earth, does not dwell in sanctuaries made by human hands,

25. et il n'est point servi par des mains humaines, (comme) s'il avait besoin de quelque chose, lui qui donne à tous la vie, le souffle et toutes choses.

25. nor is he served by human hands because he needs anything. Rather it is he who gives to everyone life and breath and everything.

26. D'un seul (homme) il a fait sortir tout le genre humain pour habiter sur toute la face de la terre, ayant fixé des époques prescrites et les frontières pour l'habitation (des hommes),

26. He made from one the whole human race to dwell on the entire surface of the earth, and he fixed the ordered seasons and the boundaries of their regions,

27. afin qu'ils cherchent Dieu, si toutefois ils le peuvent trouver en tâtonnant, et vraiment il n'est pas loin de chacun de nous.

27. so that people might seek God, even perhaps grope for him and find him, though indeed he is not far from any one of us.

28. C'est en lui en effet que nous avons la vie, le mouvement et l'être, comme l'ont dit aussi quelques-uns de vos poètes : " Car nous sommes aussi de sa race. "

28. For 'In him we live and move and have our being,' as even some of your poets have said, 'For we too are his offspring.'

29. Ainsi donc, étant de la race de Dieu, nous ne devons pas croire que la divinité soit semblable à de l'or ou à de l'argent, ou à de la pierre, sculptés par l'art et l'imagination de l'homme.

29. Since therefore we are the offspring of God, we ought not to think that the divinity is like an image fashioned from gold, silver, or stone by human art and imagination.

30. Dieu, ne tenant pas compte de ces temps d'ignorance, annonce maintenant aux hommes qu'ils aient tous, en tous lieux, à se repentir,

30. God has overlooked the times of ignorance, but now he demands that all people everywhere repent

31. parce qu'il a fixé un jour où il doit juger le monde avec justice, par un homme qu'il (y) a destiné, fournissant à tous une garantie en le ressuscitant d'entre les morts. "

31. because he has established a day on which he will 'judge the world with justice' through a man he has appointed, and he has provided confirmation for all by raising him from the dead."

32. Mais, lorsqu'ils entendirent parler de résurrection de morts, les uns se moquèrent, les autres dirent : " Nous t'entendrons là-dessus encore une autre fois. "

32. When they heard about resurrection of the dead, some began to scoff, but others said, "We should like to hear you on this some other time."

33. C'est ainsi que Paul se retira du milieu d'eux.

33. And so Paul left them.

34. Quelques hommes néanmoins s'attachèrent à lui et crurent, parmi lesquels (étaient) aussi Denys l'Aréopagite et une femme nommée Damaris, et d'autres avec eux.

34. But some did join him, and became believers. Among them were Dionysius, a member of the Court of the Areopagus, a woman named Damaris, and others with them.
