2 Maccabées, 8

1. Cependant Judas Machabée et ses compagnons,s'introduisant secrètement dans les villages, appelaientautour d'eux leurs parents, et, s'adjoignant ceux quiétaient restés fidèles au judaïsme, ilsrassemblèrent ainsi une troupe d'environ six millehommes.

1. Judas Maccabeus and his companions entered the villages, secretly, summoned their kinsmen, and by also enlisting others who remained faithful to Judaism, assembled about six thousand men.

2. Ils conjuraient le Seigneur de regarder son peuple que tout lemonde foulait aux pieds, d'avoir aussi pitié de son templeprofané par les impies,

2. They implored the Lord to look kindly upon his people, who were being oppressed on all sides; to have pity on the temple, which was profaned by godless men;

3. d'avoir compassion de la ville dévastée quiallait se trouver au niveau du sol, et d'écouter la voixdu sang qui criait vers lui,

3. to have mercy on the city, which was being destroyed and about to be leveled to the ground; to hearken to the blood that cried out to him;

4. de se souvenir du meurtre criminel des petits enfants innocentset des outrages faits à son nom, et de montrer sa hainecontre les méchants.

4. to remember the criminal slaughter of innocent children and the blasphemies uttered against his name; and to manifest his hatred of evil.

5. Une fois à la tête d'une troupe nombreuse,Machabée devint invincible aux nations, car lacolère du Seigneur s'était changée enmiséricorde.

5. Once Maccabeus got his men organized, the Gentiles could not withstand him, for the Lord's wrath had now changed to mercy.

6. Tombant à l'improviste sur les villes et les villages,il les brûlait; occupant les positions les plus favorables,il infligeait des défaites à de nombreuxennemis.

6. Coming unexpectedly upon towns and villages, he would set them on fire. He captured strategic positions, and put to flight a large number of the enemy.

7. C'est surtout la nuit qu'il choisissait pour favoriser lesuccès de ces sortes d'expéditions. Le bruit de savaleur se répandit en tous lieux.

7. He preferred the nights as being especially helpful for such attacks. Soon the fame of his valor spread everywhere.

8. Philippe ne fut pas longtemps à voir quelsprogrès faisait cet homme, et les succès de plus enplus fréquents qu'il remportait; il écrivit doncà Ptolémée, chef militaire de laCoelé-Syrie et de la Phénicie, de venir en aide auxaffaires du roi.

8. When Philip saw that Judas was gaining ground little by little and that his successful advances were becoming more frequent, he wrote to Ptolemy, governor of Coelesyria and Phoenicia, to come to the aid of the king's government.

9. Ptolémée s'étant mis à l'oeuvresans tarder, fit partir Nicanor, fils de Patrocle, un desprincipaux favoris du roi, à la tête d'au moinsvingt mille hommes de diverses nations, pour qu'ilexterminât la race entière des Juifs; il luiadjoignit Gorgias, général fortexpérimenté dans les choses de la guerre.

9. Ptolemy promptly selected Nicanor, son of Patroclus, one of the Chief Friends, and sent him at the head of at least twenty thousand armed men of various nations to wipe out the entire Jewish race. With him he associated Gorgias, a professional military commander, well-versed in the art of war.

10. Nicanor comptait bien procurer au roi, sur la vente descaptifs pris en Judée, le tribut de deux mille talentsdû aux Romains.

10. Nicanor planned to raise the two thousand talents of tribute owed by the king to the Romans by selling captured Jews into slavery.

11. Il s'empressa d'envoyer aux villes maritimes l'invitationà venir acheter des esclaves Juifs, promettant de leur endonner quatre-vingt-dix pour un talent: il ne songeait pasà la vengeance du Tout-Puissant qui allait tomber surlui.

11. So he immediately sent word to the coastal cities, inviting them to buy Jewish slaves and promising to deliver ninety slaves for a talent--little did he dream of the punishment that was to fall upon him from the Almighty.

12. Dès que Judas eut appris la marche de Nicanor, ilinforma ses compagnons de l'approche de l'armée.

12. When Judas learned of Nicanor's advance and informed his companions about the approach of the army,

13. Alors les uns, frappés de crainte et manquant de foi enla justice de Dieu, prirent la fuite et passèrent end'autres lieux;

13. the cowardly and those who lacked faith in God's justice deserted and got away.

14. les autres vendirent tout ce qui leur restait et, enmême temps, ils priaient le Seigneur de les délivrerde l'impie Nicanor, qui les avait vendus avant même que labataille fit engagée:

14. But the others sold everything they had left, and at the same time besought the Lord to deliver those whom the ungodly Nicanor had sold before even meeting them.

15. sinon à cause d'eux, du moins en considérationdes alliances faites avec leurs pères, et parce que sonnom saint et auguste avait été nommé sureux.

15. They begged the Lord to do this, if not for their sake, at least for the sake of the covenants made with their forefathers, and because they themselves bore his holy, glorious name.

16. Machabée ayant réuni ceux qui étaientrestés avec lui, au nombre de six mille hommes, lesexhorta à ne pas craindre les ennemis, et à ne passe troubler devant la multitude des nations qui marchaientinjustement contre eux, mais à combattre vaillamment,

16. Maccabeus assembled his men, six thousand strong, and exhorted them not to be panic-stricken before the enemy, nor to fear the large number of the Gentiles attacking them unjustly, but to fight courageously,

17. ayant devant les yeux l'indigne profanation accomplie parelles contre le lieu saint, l'outrage de la ville ravagée,ainsi que la ruine des institutions des ancêtres.

17. keeping before their eyes the lawless outrage perpetrated by the Gentiles against the holy Place and the affliction of the humiliated city, as well as the subversion of their ancestral way of life.

18. "Eux, dit-il, se confient dans leurs armes et des chargeshardies; nous, c'est en Dieu, maître de toutes choses, quipeut d'un signe renverser ceux qui viennent nous attaquer etl'univers même, que nous mettons notre confiance."

18. "They trust in weapons and acts of daring," he said, "but we trust in almighty God, who can by a mere nod destroy not only those who attack us, but the whole world."

19. Il énuméra aussi devant eux les exemplesantiques de la protection de Dieu; et comment, sousSennachérib, les cent quatre-vingt mille hommes avaientpéri;

19. He went on to tell them of the times when help had been given their ancestors: both the time of Sennacherib, when a hundred and eighty-five thousand of his men were destroyed,

20. et comment, dans la bataille livrée aux Galates enBabylonie, ceux qui prenaient part à l'action étanten tout huit mille, avec quatre mille Macédoniens, etceux-ci étant vivement pressés, les huit milleavaient détruit cent vingt mille ennemis, grâce ausecours qui leur était venu du ciel, et avaientremporté un grand profit.

20. and the time of the battle in Babylonia against the Galatians, when only eight thousand Jews fought along with four thousand Macedonians; yet when the Macedonians were hard pressed, the eight thousand routed one hundred and twenty thousand and took a great quantity of booty, because of the help they received from Heaven.

21. Après les avoir, par ces souvenirs, remplis deconfiance et disposés à mourir pour les lois etpour la patrie, il divisa son armée en quatre corps.

21. With such words he encouraged them and made them ready to die for their laws and their country. Then Judas divided his army into four,

22. A la tête de chaque corps, il mit ses frèresSimon, Joseph et Jonathas, leur donnant à chacun quinzecents hommes.

22. placing his brothers, Simon, Joseph, and Jonathan, each over a division, assigning to each fifteen hundred men.

23. En outre, il ordonna à Eléazar de faite lalecture du Livre saint; puis, ayant donné pour motd'ordre: Secours de Dieu! Judas prit le commandement du premiercorps et attaqua Nicanor.

23. (There was also Eleazar.) After reading to them from the holy book and giving them the watchword, "The Help of God," he himself took charge of the first division and joined in battle with Nicanor.

24. Le Tout-Puissant leur étant venu en aide, ilstuèrent plus de neuf mille ennemis, blessèrent etmutilèrent la plus grande partie des soldats de Nicanor etles mirent tous en fuite.

24. With the Almighty as their ally, they killed more than nine thousand of the enemy, wounded and disabled the greater part of Nicanor's army, and put all of them to flight.

25. Ils prirent aussi l'argent de ceux qui étaient venuspour les acheter. Ayant poursuivi assez loin les fuyards,

25. They also seized the money of those who had come to buy them as slaves. When they had pursued the enemy for some time,

26. ils revinrent sur leurs pas, arrêtés par letemps, car c'était la veille du sabbat; c'est pourquoi ilsne continuèrent pas leur poursuite.

26. they were obliged to return by reason of the late hour, it was the day before the sabbath, and for that reason they could not continue the pursuit.

27. Ayant donc ramassé les armes des ennemis et recueillileurs dépouilles, ils célébrèrent lesabbat, bénissant mille fois et louant le Seigneur qui lesavait délivrés pour ce jour, ayant résolu deleur montrer un commencement de miséricorde.

27. They collected the enemy's arms and stripped them of their spoils, and then observed the sabbath with fervent praise and thanks to the Lord who kept them safe for that day on which he let descend on them the first dew of his mercy.

28. Après le sabbat, ils distribuèrent une part dubutin à ceux qui avaient souffert de lapersécution, aux veuves et aux orphelins; eux-mêmeset leurs enfants se partagèrent le reste.

28. After the sabbath, they gave a share of the booty to the persecuted and to widows and orphans; the rest they divided among themselves and their children.

29. Cela fait, ils se mirent à prier tous ensemble,conjurant le Seigneur miséricordieux de seréconcilier entièrement avec ses serviteurs.

29. When this was done, they made supplication in common, imploring the merciful Lord to be completely reconciled with his servants.

30. Ils tuèrent aussi plus de vingt mille hommes destroupes qui combattaient sous les ordres de Timothée et deBacchidès, et s'emparèrent vaillamment de hautesforteresses. Ils divisèrent leur immense butin, en faisantdeux parts égales, l'une pour eux-mêmes, l'autrepour les persécutés, les orphelins et les veuves,ainsi que pour les vieillards.

30. They also challenged the forces of Timothy and Bacchides, killed more than twenty thousand of them, and captured some very high fortresses. They divided the enormous plunder, allotting half to themselves and the rest to the persecuted, to orphans, widows, and the aged.

31. Ils recueillirent les armes et les déposèrenttoutes avec soin en des lieux convenables, ettransportèrent à Jérusalem le reste dubutin.

31. They collected the enemies' weapons and carefully stored them in suitable places; the rest of the spoils they carried to Jerusalem.

32. Ils mirent à mort Phylarque, qui accompagnaitTimothée; c'était un homme très pervers, quiavait fait beaucoup de mal aux Juifs.

32. They also killed the commander of Timothy's forces, a most wicked man, who had done great harm to the Jews.

33. Pendant qu'ils fêtaient leur victoire dans leurcapitale, Callisthène et quelques autres, qui avaientlivré aux flammes les saintes portes du temple,s'étant réfugiés dans une petite maison, ilsles y brûlèrent et leur rendirent ainsi le justesalaire de leurs profanations.

33. While celebrating the victory in their ancestral city, they burned both those who had set fire to the sacred gates and Callisthenes, who had taken refuge in a little house; so he received the reward his wicked deeds deserved.

34. Le triple scélérat Nicanor, qui avait fait venirles mille marchands pour leur vendre les Juifs,

34. The accursed Nicanor, who had brought the thousand slave dealers to buy the Jews,

35. humilié, grâce au secours du Seigneur, par ceuxqu'il croyait plus faibles que lui, se dépouilla de sesvêtements d'honneur et, prenant à travers champscomme un fuyard, sans escorte, il rentra seul à Antioche,au désespoir d'avoir perdu son armée.

35. after being humbled through the Lord's help by those whom he had thought of no account, laid aside his fine clothes and fled alone across country like a runaway slave, until he reached Antioch. He was eminently successful in destroying his own army.

36. Et lui qui avait promis de parfaire le tribut aux Romains avecle prix des captifs de Jérusalem, il publiait maintenantque les Juifs avaient Dieu pour défenseur et qu'ainsi ilsétaient invulnérables, parce qu'ilsobéissaient aux lois qu'il leur avait prescrites.

36. So he who had promised to provide tribute for the Romans by the capture of the people of Jerusalem testified that the Jews had a champion, and that they were invulnerable for the very reason that they followed the laws laid down by him. Death of Antiochus
