Ecclesiasticus, 36
1. Have mercy upon us, O God of all, and behold us, and shew us the light of thy mercies:
1. ἐλέησον ἡμᾶς δέσποτα ὁ θεὸς πάντων καὶ ἐπίβλεψον καὶ ἐπίβαλε τὸν φόβον σου ἐπὶ πάντα τὰ ἔθνη
2. And send thy fear upon the nations, that have not sought after thee: that they may know that there is no God beside thee, and that they may shew forth thy wonders.
2. ἔπαρον τὴν χεῖρά σου ἐπὶ ἔθνη ἀλλότρια καὶ ἰδέτωσαν τὴν δυναστείαν σου
3. Lift up thy hand over the strange nations, that they may see thy power.
3. ὥσπερ ἐνώπιον αὐτῶν ἡγιάσθης ἐν ἡμῖν οὕτως ἐνώπιον ἡμῶν μεγαλυνθείης ἐν αὐτοῖς
4. For as thou hast been sanctified in us in their sight, so thou shalt be magnified among them in our presence,
4. καὶ ἐπιγνώτωσάν σε καθάπερ καὶ ἡμεῖς ἐπέγνωμεν ὅτι οὐκ ἔστιν θεὸς πλὴν σοῦ κύριε
5. That they may know thee, as we also have known thee, that there is no God beside thee, O Lord.
5. ἐγκαίνισον σημεῖα καὶ ἀλλοίωσον θαυμάσια δόξασον χεῖρα καὶ βραχίονα δεξιόν
6. Renew thy signs, and work new miracles.
6. ἔγειρον θυμὸν καὶ ἔκχεον ὀργήν ἔξαρον ἀντίδικον καὶ ἔκτριψον ἐχθρόν
7. Glorify thy hand, and thy right arm.
7. σπεῦσον καιρὸν καὶ μνήσθητι ὁρκισμοῦ καὶ ἐκδιηγησάσθωσαν τὰ μεγαλεῖά σου
8. Raise up indignation, and pour out wrath.
8. ἐν ὀργῇ πυρὸς καταβρωθήτω ὁ σῳζόμενος καὶ οἱ κακοῦντες τὸν λαόν σου εὕροισαν ἀπώλειαν
9. Take away the adversary, and crush the enemy.
9. σύντριψον κεφαλὰς ἀρχόντων ἐχθρῶν λεγόντων οὐκ ἔστιν πλὴν ἡμῶν
10. Hasten the time, and remember the end, that they may declare thy wonderful works.
10. συνάγαγε πάσας φυλὰς Ιακωβ καὶ κατακληρονόμησον αὐτοὺς καθὼς ἀπ’ ἀρχῆς
11. 11Let him that escapeth be consumed by the rage of the fire: and let them perish that oppress thy people.
11. ἐλέησον λαόν κύριε κεκλημένον ἐπ’ ὀνόματί σου καὶ Ισραηλ ὃν πρωτογόνῳ ὡμοίωσας
12. Crush the head of the princes of the enemies that say: There is no other beside us.
12. οἰκτίρησον πόλιν ἁγιάσματός σου Ιερουσαλημ τόπον καταπαύματός σου
13. Gather together all the tribes of Jacob: that they may know that there is no God besides thee, and may declare thy great works: and thou shalt inherit them as from the beginning.
13. πλῆσον Σιων ἀρεταλογίας σου καὶ ἀπὸ τῆς δόξης σου τὸν λαόν σου
14. Have mercy on thy people, upon whom thy name is invoked: and upon Israel, m whom thou hast raised up to be thy firstborn.
14. δὸς μαρτύριον τοῖς ἐν ἀρχῇ κτίσμασίν σου καὶ ἔγειρον προφητείας τὰς ἐπ’ ὀνόματί σου
15. Have mercy on Jerusalem, the city which thou hast sanctified, the city of thy rest.
15. δὸς μισθὸν τοῖς ὑπομένουσίν σε καὶ οἱ προφῆταί σου ἐμπιστευθήτωσαν
16. Fill Sion with thy unspeakable words, and thy people with thy glory.
16. εἰσάκουσον κύριε δεήσεως τῶν ἱκετῶν σου κατὰ τὴν εὐλογίαν Ααρων περὶ τοῦ λαοῦ σου
17. Give testimony to them that are thy creatures from the beginning, and raise up the prophecies which the former prophets spoke in thy name.
17. καὶ γνώσονται πάντες οἱ ἐπὶ τῆς γῆς ὅτι κύριος εἶ ὁ θεὸς τῶν αἰώνων
18. Reward them that patiently wait for thee, that thy prophets may be found faithful: and hear the prayers of thy servants,
18. πᾶν βρῶμα φάγεται κοιλία ἔστιν δὲ βρῶμα βρώματος κάλλιον
19. According to the blessing of Aaron over thy people, and direct us into the way of justice, and let all know that dwell upon the earth, that thou art God the beholder of all ages.
19. φάρυγξ γεύεται βρώματα θήρας οὕτως καρδία συνετὴ λόγους ψευδεῖς
20. The belly will devour all meat, yet one is better than another.
20. καρδία στρεβλὴ δώσει λύπην καὶ ἄνθρωπος πολύπειρος ἀνταποδώσει αὐτῷ
21. 21The palate tasteth venison and the wise heart false speeches.
21. πάντα ἄρρενα ἐπιδέξεται γυνή ἔστιν δὲ θυγάτηρ θυγατρὸς κρείσσων
22. A perverse heart will cause grief, and a man of experience will resist it.
22. κάλλος γυναικὸς ἱλαρύνει πρόσωπον καὶ ὑπὲρ πᾶσαν ἐπιθυμίαν ἀνθρώπου ὑπεράγει
23. A woman will receive every man: yet one daughter is better than an- other.
23. εἰ ἔστιν ἐπὶ γλώσσης αὐτῆς ἔλεος καὶ πραΰτης οὐκ ἔστιν ὁ ἀνὴρ αὐτῆς καθ’ υἱοὺς ἀνθρώπων
24. The beauty of a woman cheereth the countenance of her husband, and a man desireth nothing more.
24. ὁ κτώμενος γυναῖκα ἐνάρχεται κτήσεως βοηθὸν κατ’ αὐτὸν καὶ στῦλον ἀναπαύσεως
25. If she have a tongue that can cure, and likewise mitigate and shew mercy: her husband is not like other men.
25. οὗ οὐκ ἔστιν φραγμός διαρπαγήσεται κτῆμα καὶ οὗ οὐκ ἔστιν γυνή στενάξει πλανώμενος
26. He that possesseth a good wife, beginneth a possession: she is a help like to himself, and a pillar of rest.
26. τίς γὰρ πιστεύσει εὐζώνῳ λῃστῇ ἀφαλλομένῳ ἐκ πόλεως εἰς πόλιν
27. Where there is no hedge, the possession shall be spoiled: and where there is no wife, he mourneth that is in want.
27. οὕτως ἀνθρώπῳ μὴ ἔχοντι νοσσιὰν καὶ καταλύοντι οὗ ἐὰν ὀψίσῃ
28. Who will trust him that hath no rest, and that lodgeth wheresoever the night taketh him, as a robber well appointed, that skippeth from city to city.
