1. I have told you all this so that you may not fall away.

1. "I have said all this to you to keep you from falling away.

2. They will expel you from the synagogues, and indeed the time is coming when anyone who kills you will think he is doing a holy service to God.

2. They will put you out of the synagogues; indeed, the hour is coming when whoever kills you will think he is offering service to God.

3. They will do these things because they have never known either the Father or me.

3. And they will do this because they have not known the Father, nor me.

4. But I have told you all this, so that when the time for it comes you may remember that I told you. I did not tell you this from the beginning, because I was with you;

4. But I have said these things to you, that when their hour comes you may remember that I told you of them. "I did not say these things to you from the beginning, because I was with you.

5. but now I am going to the one who sent me. Not one of you asks, 'Where are you going?'

5. But now I am going to him who sent me; yet none of you asks me, `Where are you going?'

6. Yet you are sad at heart because I have told you this.

6. But because I have said these things to you, sorrow has filled your hearts.

7. Still, I am telling you the truth: it is for your own good that I am going, because unless I go, the Paraclete will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you.

7. Nevertheless I tell you the truth: it is to your advantage that I go away, for if I do not go away, the Counselor will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you.

8. And when he comes, he will show the world how wrong it was, about sin, and about who was in the right, and about judgement:

8. And when he comes, he will convince the world concerning sin and righteousness and judgment:

9. about sin: in that they refuse to believe in me;

9. concerning sin, because they do not believe in me;

10. about who was in the right: in that I am going to the Father and you will see me no more;

10. concerning righteousness, because I go to the Father, and you will see me no more;

11. about judgement: in that the prince of this world is already condemned.

11. concerning judgment, because the ruler of this world is judged.

12. I still have many things to say to you but they would be too much for you to bear now.

12. "I have yet many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now.

13. However, when the Spirit of truth comes he will lead you to the complete truth, since he will not be speaking of his own accord, but will say only what he has been told; and he will reveal to you the things to come.

13. When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth; for he will not speak on his own authority, but whatever he hears he will speak, and he will declare to you the things that are to come.

14. He will glorify me, since all he reveals to you will be taken from what is mine.

14. He will glorify me, for he will take what is mine and declare it to you.

15. Everything the Father has is mine; that is why I said: all he reveals to you will be taken from what is mine.

15. All that the Father has is mine; therefore I said that he will take what is mine and declare it to you.

16. In a short time you will no longer see me, and then a short time later you will see me again.

16. "A little while, and you will see me no more; again a little while, and you will see me."

17. Then some of his disciples said to one another, 'What does he mean, "In a short time you will no longer see me, and then a short time later you will see me again," and, "I am going to the Father"?

17. Some of his disciples said to one another, "What is this that he says to us, `A little while, and you will not see me, and again a little while, and you will see me'; and, `because I go to the Father'?"

18. What is this "short time"? We don't know what he means.'

18. They said, "What does he mean by `a little while'? We do not know what he means."

19. Jesus knew that they wanted to question him, so he said, 'You are asking one another what I meant by saying, "In a short time you will no longer see me, and then a short time later you will see me again."

19. Jesus knew that they wanted to ask him; so he said to them, "Is this what you are asking yourselves, what I meant by saying, `A little while, and you will not see me, and again a little while, and you will see me'?

20. 'In all truth I tell you, you will be weeping and wailing while the world will rejoice; you will be sorrowful, but your sorrow will turn to joy.

20. Truly, truly, I say to you, you will weep and lament, but the world will rejoice; you will be sorrowful, but your sorrow will turn into joy.

21. A woman in childbirth suffers, because her time has come; but when she has given birth to the child she forgets the suffering in her joy that a human being has been born into the world.

21. When a woman is in travail she has sorrow, because her hour has come; but when she is delivered of the child, she no longer remembers the anguish, for joy that a child is born into the world.

22. So it is with you: you are sad now, but I shall see you again, and your hearts will be full of joy, and that joy no one shall take from you.

22. So you have sorrow now, but I will see you again and your hearts will rejoice, and no one will take your joy from you.

23. When that day comes, you will not ask me any questions. In all truth I tell you, anything you ask from the Father he will grant in my name.

23. In that day you will ask nothing of me. Truly, truly, I say to you, if you ask anything of the Father, he will give it to you in my name.

24. Until now you have not asked anything in my name. Ask and you will receive, and so your joy will be complete.

24. Hitherto you have asked nothing in my name; ask, and you will receive, that your joy may be full.

25. I have been telling you these things in veiled language. The hour is coming when I shall no longer speak to you in veiled language but tell you about the Father in plain words.

25. "I have said this to you in figures; the hour is coming when I shall no longer speak to you in figures but tell you plainly of the Father.

26. When that day comes you will ask in my name; and I do not say that I shall pray to the Father for you,

26. In that day you will ask in my name; and I do not say to you that I shall pray the Father for you;

27. because the Father himself loves you for loving me, and believing that I came from God.

27. for the Father himself loves you, because you have loved me and have believed that I came from the Father.

28. I came from the Father and have come into the world and now I am leaving the world to go to the Father.'

28. I came from the Father and have come into the world; again, I am leaving the world and going to the Father."

29. His disciples said, 'Now you are speaking plainly and not using veiled language.

29. His disciples said, "Ah, now you are speaking plainly, not in any figure!

30. Now we see that you know everything and need not wait for questions to be put into words; because of this we believe that you came from God.'

30. Now we know that you know all things, and need none to question you; by this we believe that you came from God."

31. Jesus answered them: Do you believe at last?

31. Jesus answered them, "Do you now believe?

32. Listen; the time will come -- indeed it has come already -- when you are going to be scattered, each going his own way and leaving me alone. And yet I am not alone, because the Father is with me.

32. The hour is coming, indeed it has come, when you will be scattered, every man to his home, and will leave me alone; yet I am not alone, for the Father is with me.

33. I have told you all this so that you may find peace in me. In the world you will have hardship, but be courageous: I have conquered the world.

33. I have said this to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world."
