Deuteronomy, 4

1. 'And now, Israel, listen to the laws and customs which I am teaching you today, so that, by observing them, you may survive to enter and take possession of the country which Yahweh, God of your ancestors, is giving you.

1. Und nun, Israel, höre die Gesetze und Rechtsvorschriften, die ich euch zu halten lehre. Hört und ihr werdet leben, ihr werdet in das Land, das der Herr, der Gott eurer Väter, euch gibt, hineinziehen und es in Besitz nehmen.

2. You must add nothing to what I command you, and take nothing from it, but keep the commandments of Yahweh your God just as I lay them down for you.

2. Ihr sollt dem Wortlaut dessen, worauf ich euch verpflichte, nichts hinzufügen und nichts davon wegnehmen; ihr sollt auf die Gebote des Herrn, eures Gottes, achten, auf die ich euch verpflichte.

3. You can see for yourselves what Yahweh has done about the Baal of Peor; Yahweh your God has destroyed all those of you who followed the Baal of Peor;

3. Ihr habt mit eigenen Augen gesehen, was der Herr wegen des Baal-Pegor getan hat. Jeden, der dem Baal-Pegor nachfolgte, hat der Herr, dein Gott, in deiner Mitte vernichtet.

4. but those of you who stayed faithful to Yahweh your God are all alive today.

4. Ihr aber habt euch am Herrn, eurem Gott, fest gehalten, und darum seid ihr alle heute noch am Leben.

5. Look: as Yahweh my God commanded me, I have taught you laws and customs, for you to observe in the country of which you are going to take possession.

5. Hiermit lehre ich euch, wie es mir der Herr, mein Gott, aufgetragen hat, Gesetze und Rechtsvorschriften. Ihr sollt sie innerhalb des Landes halten, in das ihr hineinzieht, um es in Besitz zu nehmen.

6. Keep them, put them into practice, and other peoples will admire your wisdom and prudence. Once they know what all these laws are, they will exclaim, "No other people is as wise and prudent as this great nation!"

6. Ihr sollt auf sie achten und sollt sie halten. Denn darin besteht eure Weisheit und eure Bildung in den Augen der Völker. Wenn sie dieses Gesetzeswerk kennen lernen, müssen sie sagen: In der Tat, diese große Nation ist ein weises und gebildetes Volk.

7. And indeed, what great nation has its gods as near as Yahweh our God is to us whenever we call to him?

7. Denn welche große Nation hätte Götter, die ihr so nah sind, wie Jahwe, unser Gott, uns nah ist, wo immer wir ihn anrufen?

8. And what great nation has laws and customs as upright as the entirety of this Law which I am laying down for you today?

8. Oder welche große Nation besäße Gesetze und Rechtsvorschriften, die so gerecht sind wie alles in dieser Weisung, die ich euch heute vorlege?

9. 'But take care, as you value your lives! Do not forget the things which you yourselves have seen, or let them slip from your heart as long as you live; teach them, rather, to your children and to your children's children.

9. Jedoch, nimm dich in Acht, achte gut auf dich! Vergiss nicht die Ereignisse, die du mit eigenen Augen gesehen, und die Worte, die du gehört hast. Lass sie dein ganzes Leben lang nicht aus dem Sinn! Präge sie deinen Kindern und Kindeskindern ein!

10. The day you stood at Horeb in the presence of Yahweh your God, Yahweh said to me, "Summon the people to me; I want them to hear me speaking, so that they will learn to fear me all the days they live on earth, and teach this to their children."

10. Vergiss nicht den Tag, als du am Horeb vor dem Herrn, deinem Gott, standest. Der Herr hatte zu mir gesagt: Ruf mir das Volk zusammen! Ich will sie meine Worte hören lassen. Sie sollen lernen, mich zu fürchten, so lange, wie sie im Land leben, und sie sollen es auch ihre Kinder lehren.

11. So you came and stood at the foot of the mountain, and the mountain flamed to the very sky, a sky darkened by cloud, murky and thunderous.

11. Ihr wart herangekommen und standet unten am Berg und der Berg brannte: Feuer, hoch bis in den Himmel hinauf, Finsternis, Wolken und Dunkel.

12. Yahweh then spoke to you from the heart of the fire; you heard the sound of words but saw no shape; there was only a voice.

12. Der Herr sprach zu euch mitten aus dem Feuer. Ihr hörtet den Donner der Worte. Eine Gestalt habt ihr nicht gesehen. Ihr habt nur den Donner gehört.

13. He revealed his covenant to you and commanded you to observe it, the Ten Words which he inscribed on two tablets of stone.

13. Der Herr offenbarte euch seinen Bund, er verpflichtete euch, ihn zu halten: die Zehn Worte. Er schrieb sie auf zwei Steintafeln.

14. Yahweh then ordered me to teach you the laws and customs that you were to observe in the country into which you are about to cross, to take possession of it.

14. Mir befahl damals der Herr, euch Gesetze und Rechtsvorschriften zu lehren, die ihr in dem Land halten sollt, in das ihr hinüberzieht, um es in Besitz zu nehmen.

15. 'Hence, be very careful what you do. Since you saw no shape that day at Horeb when Yahweh spoke to you from the heart of the fire,

15. Nehmt euch um eures Lebens willen gut in Acht! Denn eine Gestalt habt ihr an dem Tag, als der Herr am Horeb mitten aus dem Feuer zu euch sprach, nicht gesehen.

16. see that you do not corrupt yourselves by making an image in the shape of anything whatever: be it statue of man or of woman,

16. Lauft nicht in euer Verderben und macht euch kein Gottesbildnis, das irgendetwas darstellt, keine Statue, kein Abbild eines männlichen oder weiblichen Wesens,

17. or of any animal on the earth, or of any bird that flies in the heavens,

17. kein Abbild irgendeines Tiers, das auf der Erde lebt, kein Abbild irgendeines gefiederten Vogels, der am Himmel fliegt,

18. or of any reptile that crawls on the ground, or of any fish in the waters under the earth.

18. kein Abbild irgendeines Tiers, das am Boden kriecht, und kein Abbild irgendeines Meerestieres im Wasser unter der Erde.

19. When you raise your eyes to heaven, when you see the sun, the moon, the stars -- the entire array of heaven -- do not be tempted to worship them and serve them. Yahweh your God has allotted these to all the other peoples under heaven,

19. Wenn du die Augen zum Himmel erhebst und das ganze Himmelsheer siehst, die Sonne, den Mond und die Sterne, dann lass dich nicht verführen! Du sollst dich nicht vor ihnen niederwerfen und ihnen nicht dienen. Der Herr, dein Gott, hat sie allen anderen Völkern überall unter dem Himmel zugewiesen.

20. but Yahweh has chosen you, bringing you out of the iron-foundry, Egypt, to be his own people, his own people as you still are today.

20. Euch aber hat der Herr genommen und aus dem Schmelzofen, aus Ägypten, herausgeführt, damit ihr sein Volk, sein Erbbesitz werdet - wie ihr es heute seid.

21. 'Yahweh is angry with me because of you; he has sworn that I shall not cross the Jordan or enter the fine country which Yahweh your God is giving you as your heritage.

21. Zwar hat der Herr mir wegen eures Murrens gegrollt und mir geschworen, ich dürfe nicht über den Jordan ziehen und das prächtige Land betreten, das der Herr, dein Gott, dir als Erbbesitz gibt.

22. Yes, I am to die in this country; I shall not cross this Jordan; you will go over and take possession of that rich land.

22. Ich muss in diesem Land hier sterben und werde nicht über den Jordan ziehen. Aber ihr werdet hinüberziehen und dieses prächtige Land in Besitz nehmen.

23. Be careful not to forget the covenant which Yahweh your God has made with you, by sculpting an image or making a statue of anything, since Yahweh your God has forbidden this;

23. Nehmt euch in Acht! Vergesst nicht den Bund, den der Herr, euer Gott, mit euch geschlossen hat. Ihr sollt euch kein Gottesbildnis machen, das irgendetwas darstellt, was der Herr, dein Gott, dir verboten hat.

24. for Yahweh your God is a consuming fire, a jealous God.

24. Denn der Herr, dein Gott, ist verzehrendes Feuer. Er ist ein eifersüchtiger Gott.

25. 'When you have fathered children and grandchildren and have grown old in the country, when you have grown corrupt and made some image, doing what Yahweh regards as wrong and so provoking his anger-

25. Wenn du Kinder und Kindeskinder zeugst und ihr im Land heimisch seid, wenn ihr dann ins Verderben lauft und ein Gottesbildnis macht, das irgendetwas darstellt, wenn ihr also tut, was in den Augen des Herrn, deines Gottes, böse ist, und wenn ihr ihn erzürnt -

26. today I call heaven and earth to witness against you -- you will quickly vanish from the country which you are crossing the Jordan to possess. Your days will not be prolonged there, for you will be utterly destroyed.

26. den Himmel und die Erde rufe ich heute als Zeugen gegen euch an: dann werdet ihr unverzüglich aus dem Land ausgetilgt sein, in das ihr jetzt über den Jordan zieht, um es in Besitz zu nehmen. Nicht lange werdet ihr darin leben. Ihr werdet vernichtet werden.

27. Yahweh will scatter you among the peoples, and only a small number of you will remain among the nations where Yahweh will have driven you.

27. Der Herr wird euch unter die Völker verstreuen. Nur einige von euch werden übrig bleiben in den Nationen, zu denen der Herr euch führt.

28. There you will serve gods made by human hand, of wood and of stone, that cannot see or hear, eat or smell.

28. Dort müsst ihr Göttern dienen, Machwerken von Menschenhand, aus Holz und Stein. Sie können nicht sehen und nicht hören, nicht essen und nicht riechen.

29. 'If, however, from there you start searching once more for Yahweh your God, and if you search for him honestly and sincerely, you will find him.

29. Dort werdet ihr den Herrn, deinen Gott, wieder suchen. Du wirst ihn auch finden, wenn du dich mit ganzem Herzen und mit ganzer Seele um ihn bemühst.

30. You will suffer; everything I have said will befall you, but in the final days you will return to Yahweh your God and listen to his voice.

30. Wenn du in Not bist, werden alle diese Worte dich finden. In späteren Tagen wirst du zum Herrn, deinem Gott, zurückkehren und auf seine Stimme hören.

31. For Yahweh your God is a merciful God and will not desert or destroy you or forget the covenant which he made on oath with your ancestors.

31. Denn der Herr, dein Gott, ist ein barmherziger Gott. Er lässt dich nicht fallen und gibt dich nicht dem Verderben preis und vergisst nicht den Bund mit deinen Vätern, den er ihnen beschworen hat.

32. 'Put this question, then, to the ages that are past, that have gone before you, from when God created the human race on earth: Was there ever a word so majestic, from one end of heaven to the other? Was anything like it ever heard?

32. Forsche doch einmal in früheren Zeiten nach, die vor dir gewesen sind, seit dem Tag, als Gott den Menschen auf der Erde schuf; forsche nach vom einen Ende des Himmels bis zum andern Ende: Hat sich je etwas so Großes ereignet wie dieses und hat man je solche Worte gehört?

33. Did ever a people hear the voice of the living God speaking from the heart of the fire, as you have heard it, and remain alive?

33. Hat je ein Volk einen Gott mitten aus dem Feuer im Donner sprechen hören, wie du ihn gehört hast, und ist am Leben geblieben?

34. Has it ever been known before that any god took action himself to bring one nation out of another one, by ordeals, signs, wonders, war with mighty hand and outstretched arm, by fearsome terrors -- all of which things Yahweh your God has done for you before your eyes in Egypt?

34. Oder hat je ein Gott es ebenso versucht, zu einer Nation zu kommen und sie mitten aus einer anderen herauszuholen unter Prüfungen, unter Zeichen, Wundern und Krieg, mit starker Hand und hoch erhobenem Arm und unter großen Schrecken, wie es der Herr, euer Gott, in Ägypten mit euch getan hat, vor deinen Augen?

35. 'This he showed you, so that you might know that Yahweh is the true God and that there is no other.

35. Das hast du sehen dürfen, damit du erkennst: Jahwe ist der Gott, kein anderer ist außer ihm.

36. To instruct you, he made you hear his voice from heaven, and on earth he let you see his great fire, and from the heart of the fire you heard his words.

36. Vom Himmel herab ließ er dich seinen Donner hören, um dich zu erziehen. Auf der Erde ließ er dich sein großes Feuer sehen und mitten aus dem Feuer hast du seine Worte gehört.

37. Because he loved your ancestors and, after them, chose their descendants, he has brought you out of Egypt, displaying his presence and mighty power,

37. Weil er deine Väter lieb gewonnen hatte, hat er alle Nachkommen eines jeden von ihnen erwählt und dich dann in eigener Person durch seine große Kraft aus Ägypten geführt,

38. dispossessing for you nations who were larger and stronger than you, to make way for you and to give you their country as your heritage, as it still is today.

38. um bei deinem Angriff Völker zu vertreiben, die größer und mächtiger sind als du, um dich in ihr Land zu führen und es dir als Erbbesitz zu geben, wie es jetzt geschieht.

39. 'Hence, grasp this today and meditate on it carefully: Yahweh is the true God, in heaven above as on earth beneath, he and no other.

39. Heute sollst du erkennen und dir zu Herzen nehmen: Jahwe ist der Gott im Himmel droben und auf der Erde unten, keiner sonst.

40. Keep his laws and commandments as I give them to you today, so that you and your children after you may prosper and live long in the country that Yahweh your God is giving you for ever.'

40. Daher sollst du auf seine Gesetze und seine Gebote, auf die ich dich heute verpflichte, achten, damit es dir und später deinen Nachkommen gut geht und du lange lebst in dem Land, das der Herr, dein Gott, dir gibt für alle Zeit.

41. Moses then set aside three towns in the east, beyond the Jordan,

41. Damals hat Mose jenseits des Jordan, nach Osten hin, drei Städten eine Sonderstellung zugewiesen.

42. to which any killer might flee who had accidentally, without any previous feud, killed his fellow; by taking refuge in one of these towns he could save his life.

42. Dorthin soll jeder, der einen Menschen getötet hat, fliehen können, falls er den andern ohne Vorsatz getötet hat und nicht schon früher mit ihm verfeindet gewesen ist. Wenn er in eine dieser Städte flieht, darf er am Leben bleiben.

43. These were, for the Reubenites, Bezer in the desert on the tableland; for the Gadites, Ramoth in Gilead; for the Manassehites, Golan in Bashan.

43. Es sind Bezer im Wüstengebiet der Hochebene für die Rubeniter, Ramot in Gilead für die Gaditer und Golan im Baschan für die Manassiter.

44. This is the Law which Moses presented to the Israelites.

44. Und das ist die Weisung, die Mose den Israeliten vorgelegt hat.

45. These are the stipulations, the laws and the customs which Moses gave the Israelites after they had left Egypt,

45. Das sind die Satzungen, die Gesetze und Rechtsvorschriften, die Mose den Israeliten verkündet hat, als sie aus Ägypten zogen.

46. beyond the Jordan in the valley near Beth-Peor, in the country of Sihon the Amorite king who had lived at Heshbon. Moses and the Israelites had defeated him when they left Egypt,

46. Es geschah jenseits des Jordan, in der Talschlucht gegenüber Bet-Pegor, im Land Sihons, des Königs der Amoriter, der in Heschbon seinen Sitz hatte. Ihn hatten Mose und die Israeliten geschlagen, als sie aus Ägypten zogen.

47. and had taken possession of his country, as well as that of Og king of Bashan -- two Amorite kings to the east beyond the Jordan,

47. Sie hatten sein Land und das Land Ogs, des Königs des Baschan, in Besitz genommen, das Land der beiden Amoriterkönige jenseits des Jordan, im Osten,

48. from Aroer on the edge of the Arnon Valley, all the way to Mount Sion (that is, Hermon) -

48. von Aroër am Rand des Arnontals bis zum Gebirge Sion - das ist der Hermon -

49. and of the whole Arabah east of the Jordan as far as the Sea of the Arabah, at the foot of the slopes of Pisgah.

49. und die ganze Araba jenseits des Jordan nach Osten hin, bis zum Meer der Araba unterhalb der Steilhänge des Pisga.
