1. Quand le Seigneur connut que les Pharisiens avaient appris que Jésus faisait plus de disciples et en baptisait plus que Jean,

1. Now when Jesus learned that the Pharisees had heard that Jesus was making and baptizing more disciples than John

2. - toutefois ce n'était pas Jésus lui-même qui baptisait, mais ses disciples, -

2. (although Jesus himself was not baptizing, just his disciples),

3. Il quitta la Judée, et s'en alla de nouveau en Galilée.

3. he left Judea and returned to Galilee.

4. Or, il fallait passer par la Samarie.

4. He had to pass through Samaria.

5. Il vint donc en une ville de Samarie, nommée Sichar, près du champ que Jacob avait donné à son fils Joseph.

5. So he came to a town of Samaria called Sychar, near the plot of land that Jacob had given to his son Joseph.

6. Or, là était le puits de Jacob. Jésus fatigué de la route, s'assit tout simplement au bord du puits: il était environ la sixième heure.

6. Jacob's well was there. Jesus, tired from his journey, sat down there at the well. It was about noon.

7. Une femme de Samarie vint puiser de l'eau.

7. A woman of Samaria came to draw water. Jesus said to her, "Give me a drink."

8. Jésus lui dit: "Donnez-moi à boire." Car ses disciples étaient allés à la ville pour acheter des vivres.

8. His disciples had gone into the town to buy food.

9. La femme samaritaine lui dit: "Comment vous, qui êtes Juif, me demandez-vous à boire, à moi qui suis Samaritaine? (les Juifs, en effet, n'ont pas de commerce avec les Samaritains).

9. The Samaritan woman said to him, "How can you, a Jew, ask me, a Samaritan woman, for a drink?" (For Jews use nothing in common with Samaritans.)

10. Jésus lui répondit: "Si vous connaissiez le don de Dieu, et qui est celui qui vous dit: Donnez-moi à boire, vous même lui en auriez fait la demande, et il vous aurait donné de l'eau vive."

10. Jesus answered and said to her, "If you knew the gift of God and who is saying to you, 'Give me a drink,' you would have asked him and he would have given you living water."

11. "Seigneur, lui dit la femme, vous n'avez rien pour puiser, et le puits est profond: d'où auriez-vous donc cette eau vive?

11. (The woman) said to him, "Sir, you do not even have a bucket and the cistern is deep; where then can you get this living water?

12. Etes-vous plus grand que notre père Jacob, qui nous a donné ce puits, et en a bu lui-même, ainsi que ses fils et ses troupeaux?"

12. Are you greater than our father Jacob, who gave us this cistern and drank from it himself with his children and his flocks?"

13. Jésus lui répondit: "Quiconque boit de cette eau aura encore soif; mais celui qui boira de l'eau que je lui donnerai, n'aura plus jamais soif;

13. Jesus answered and said to her, "Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again;

14. Au contraire, l'eau que je lui donnerai deviendra en lui une source d'eau jaillissant jusqu'à la vie éternelle."

14. but whoever drinks the water I shall give will never thirst; the water I shall give will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life."

15. La femme lui dit: "Seigneur, donnez-moi de cette eau, afin que je n'aie plus soif, et que je ne vienne plus puiser ici."

15. The woman said to him, "Sir, give me this water, so that I may not be thirsty or have to keep coming here to draw water."

16. "Allez, lui dit Jésus, appelez votre mari, et venez ici."

16. Jesus said to her, "Go call your husband and come back."

17. La femme répondit: "Je n'ai point de mari." Jésus lui dit: "Vous avez raison de dire: Je n'ai point de mari;

17. The woman answered and said to him, "I do not have a husband." Jesus answered her, "You are right in saying, 'I do not have a husband.'

18. Car vous avez eu cinq maris, et celui que vous avez maintenant n'est pas à vous; en cela, vous avez dit vrai."

18. For you have had five husbands, and the one you have now is not your husband. What you have said is true."

19. La femme dit: "Seigneur, je vois que vous êtes un prophète.

19. The woman said to him, "Sir, I can see that you are a prophet.

20. Nos pères ont adoré sur cette montagne, et vous, vous dites que c'est à Jérusalem qu'est le lieu où il faut adorer."

20. Our ancestors worshiped on this mountain; but you people say that the place to worship is in Jerusalem."

21. Jésus dit: "Femme, croyez-moi, l'heure vient où ce ne sera ni sur cette montagne, ni dans Jérusalem, que vous adorerez le Père.

21. Jesus said to her, "Believe me, woman, the hour is coming when you will worship the Father neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem.

22. Vous adorez ce que vous ne connaissez pas; nous, nous adorons ce que nous connaissons, car le salut vient des Juifs.

22. You people worship what you do not understand; we worship what we understand, because salvation is from the Jews.

23. Mais l'heure approche, et elle est déjà venue, où les vrais adorateurs adoreront le Père en esprit et en vérité; ce sont de tels adorateurs que le Père demande.

23. But the hour is coming, and is now here, when true worshipers will worship the Father in Spirit and truth; and indeed the Father seeks such people to worship him.

24. Dieu est esprit, et ceux qui l'adorent doivent l'adorer en esprit et en vérité."

24. God is Spirit, and those who worship him must worship in Spirit and truth."

25. La femme lui répondit: "Je sais que le Messie (celui qu'on appelle Christ) va venir; lorsqu'il sera venu, il nous instruira de toutes choses."

25. The woman said to him, "I know that the Messiah is coming, the one called the Anointed; when he comes, he will tell us everything."

26. Jésus lui dit: " Je le suis, moi qui vous parle."

26. Jesus said to her, "I am he, the one who is speaking with you."

27. Et à ce moment arrivèrent ses disciples, et ils s'étonnèrent de ce qu'il parlait avec une femme; néanmoins, aucun ne dit: "Que demandez-vous?" ou: "Pourquoi parlez-vous avec elle?"

27. At that moment his disciples returned, and were amazed that he was talking with a woman, but still no one said, "What are you looking for?" or "Why are you talking with her?"

28. La femme, alors, laissant là sa cruche, s'en alla dans la ville, et dit aux habitants:

28. The woman left her water jar and went into the town and said to the people,

29. "Venez voir un homme qui m'a dit ce que j'ai fait; ne serait-ce point le Christ?"

29. "Come see a man who told me everything I have done. Could he possibly be the Messiah?"

30. Ils sortirent de la ville, et vinrent à lui.

30. They went out of the town and came to him.

31. Pendant l'intervalle, ses disciples le pressaient, en disant: "Maître, mangez."

31. Meanwhile, the disciples urged him, "Rabbi, eat."

32. Mais il leur dit: "J'ai à manger une nourriture que vous ne connaissez pas."

32. But he said to them, "I have food to eat of which you do not know."

33. Et les disciples se disaient les uns aux autres: "Quelqu'un lui aurait-il apporté à manger?"

33. So the disciples said to one another, "Could someone have brought him something to eat?"

34. Jésus leur dit: "Ma nourriture est de faire la volonté de celui qui m'a envoyé et d'accomplir son ?uvre.

34. Jesus said to them, "My food is to do the will of the one who sent me and to finish his work.

35. Ne dites-vous pas vous-mêmes: Encore quatre mois, et ce sera la moisson? Moi, je vous dis: Levez les yeux, et voyez les champs qui déjà blanchissent pour la moisson.

35. Do you not say, 'In four months the harvest will be here'? I tell you, look up and see the fields ripe for the harvest.

36. Le moissonneur reçoit son salaire et recueille du fruit pour la vie éternelle, afin que le semeur et le moissonneur se réjouissent ensemble.

36. The reaper is already receiving his payment and gathering crops for eternal life, so that the sower and reaper can rejoice together.

37. Car ici s'applique l'adage: Autre est le semeur et autre le moissonneur.

37. For here the saying is verified that 'One sows and another reaps.'

38. Je vous ai envoyés moissonner ce que vous n'avez pas travaillé; d'autres ont travaillé et vous, vous êtes entrés dans leur travail."

38. I sent you to reap what you have not worked for; others have done the work, and you are sharing the fruits of their work."

39. Or, beaucoup de Samaritains de cette ville crurent en Jésus sur la parole de la femme qui avait rendu ce témoignage: "Il m'a dit tout ce que j'ai fait."

39. Many of the Samaritans of that town began to believe in him because of the word of the woman who testified, "He told me everything I have done."

40. Les Samaritains étant donc venus vers lui, le prièrent de rester chez eux, et il y demeura deux jours.

40. When the Samaritans came to him, they invited him to stay with them; and he stayed there two days.

41. Et un plus grand nombre crurent en lui pour l'avoir entendu lui-même.

41. Many more began to believe in him because of his word,

42. Et ils disaient à la femme: "Maintenant ce n'est plus à cause de ce que vous avez dit que nous croyons; car nous l'avons entendu nous-mêmes, et nous savons qu'il est vraiment le Sauveur du monde."

42. and they said to the woman, "We no longer believe because of your word; for we have heard for ourselves, and we know that this is truly the savior of the world."

43. Après ces deux jours, Jésus partit de là pour se rendre en Galilée.

43. After the two days, he left there for Galilee.

44. Car Jésus avait déclaré lui-même qu'un prophète n'est point honoré dans sa patrie.

44. For Jesus himself testified that a prophet has no honor in his native place.

45. Lorsqu'il fut arrivé en Galilée, les Galiléens l'accueillirent, ayant vu tout ce qu'il avait fait à Jérusalem pendant la fête;

45. When he came into Galilee, the Galileans welcomed him, since they had seen all he had done in Jerusalem at the feast; for they themselves had gone to the feast.

46. Car eux aussi étaient allés à la fête. Il retourna donc à Cana en Galilée, où il avait changé l'eau en vin. Or, il y avait un officier du roi dont le fils était malade à Capharnaüm.

46. Then he returned to Cana in Galilee, where he had made the water wine. Now there was a royal official whose son was ill in Capernaum.

47. Ayant appris que Jésus arrivait de Judée en Galilée, il alla vers lui, et le pria de descendre, pour guérir son fils qui était à la mort.

47. When he heard that Jesus had arrived in Galilee from Judea, he went to him and asked him to come down and heal his son, who was near death.

48. Jésus lui dit; "Si vous ne voyez des signes et des prodiges, vous ne croyez point."

48. Jesus said to him, "Unless you people see signs and wonders, you will not believe."

49. L'officier du roi lui dit: "Seigneur, venez avant que mon enfant ne meure"

49. The royal official said to him, "Sir, come down before my child dies."

50. "Va, lui répondit Jésus, ton enfant est plein de vie." Cet homme crut à la parole que Jésus lui avait dite et partit.

50. Jesus said to him, "You may go; your son will live." The man believed what Jesus said to him and left.

51. Comme il s'en retournait, ses serviteurs vinrent à sa rencontre, et lui apprirent que son enfant vivait.

51. While he was on his way back, his slaves met him and told him that his boy would live.

52. Il leur demanda à quelle heure il s'était trouvé mieux, et ils lui dirent: "Hier, à la septième heure, la fièvre l'a quitté."

52. He asked them when he began to recover. They told him, "The fever left him yesterday, about one in the afternoon."

53. Le père reconnut que c'était l'heure à laquelle Jésus lui avait dit: "Ton fils est plein de vie", et il crut, lui et toute sa maison.

53. The father realized that just at that time Jesus had said to him, "Your son will live," and he and his whole household came to believe.

54. Ce fut le second miracle que fit Jésus en revenant de Judée en Galilée.

54. (Now) this was the second sign Jesus did when he came to Galilee from Judea.
