Baruch, 2

1. C'est pourquoi le Seigneur notre Dieu a accompli sa paroleQu'il avait prononcée contre nous, Contre nos juges quiont jugé Israël, Contre nos rois, contre nos chefs,Et contre tous les hommes d'Israël et de Juda,

1. "And the LORD fulfilled the warning he had uttered against us: against our judges, who governed Israel, against our kings and princes, and against the men of Israel and Judah.

2. Nous menaçant de faire venir sur nous de grandescalamités, Telles qu'il n'en a jamais existé sousle ciel comme il y en a eu à Jérusalem, Selon cequi est écrit dans la loi de Moïse,

2. He brought down upon us evils so great that there has not been done anywhere under heaven what has been done in Jerusalem, as was written in the law of Moses:

3. Savoir, que chacun mangerait la chair de son fils et la chairde sa fille.

3. that one after another of us should eat the flesh of his son or of his daughter.

4. Et le Seigneur les a mis sous la main de tous les rois qui sontautour de nous, Pour être un objet d'opprobre et destupéfaction Pour tous les peuples au milieu desquels leSeigneur nous a dispersés.

4. He has made us subject to all the kingdoms round about us, a reproach and a horror among all the nations round about to which the LORD has scattered us.

5. Et nous avons été assujettis au lieu decommander, Parce que nous avons offensé le Seigneur notreDieu En n'obéissant pas à sa voix.

5. We are brought low, not raised up, because we sinned against the LORD, our God, not heeding his voice.

6. Au Seigneur notre Dieu appartient la justice, A nous età nos pères la confusion du visage, Comme on levoit en ce jour.

6. "Justice is with the LORD, our God; and we, like our fathers, are flushed with shame even today.

7. Tous ces maux dont le Seigneur nous avait menacés Sontvenus sur nous.

7. All the evils of which the LORD had warned us have come upon us:

8. Et nous n'avons pas prié la face du Seigneur De fairerevenir chacun de nous des pensées de son c?urmauvais.

8. and we did not plead before the LORD, or turn, each from the figments of his evil heart.

9. Aussi le Seigneur a veillé sur notre malheur, Et il l'afait venir sur nous; Car le Seigneur est juste dans toutes les?uvres qu'il nous a commandées.

9. And the LORD kept watch over the evils, and brought them home to us; for the LORD is just in all the works he commanded us to do,

10. Et nous n'avons pas écouté sa voix, Pourobserver les préceptes que le Seigneur a mis devantnous.

10. but we did not heed his voice, or follow the precepts of the LORD which he set before us.

11. Et maintenant, Seigneur, Dieu d'Israël, Qui avez faitsortir votre peuple du pays d'Egypte Par une main forte, par des miracles et des prodiges, Endéployant une grande puissance et un brasélevé, Et qui vous êtes fait un nom, comme onle voit en ce jour,

11. "And now, LORD, God of Israel, you who led your people out of the land of Egypt with your mighty hand, with signs and wonders and great might, and with your upraised arm, so that you have made for yourself a name till the present day:

12. Nous avons péché, nous avons fait des actesimpies, Nous avons commis l'iniquité, Seigneur notre Dieu,En transgressant tous vos préceptes.

12. we have sinned, been impious, and violated, O LORD, our God, all your statutes.

13. Que votre colère se détourne de nous, Puisquenous ne sommes plus qu'un faible reste Parmi les nationsoù vous nous avez dispersés.

13. Let your anger be withdrawn from us, for we are left few in number among the nations to which you scattered us.

14. Exaucez, Seigneur, nos prières et nos supplications;Venez-nous en aide pour l'honneur de votre nom, Et faites-noustrouver faveur auprès de ceux qui nous ont emmenésen exil.

14. Hear, O LORD, our prayer of supplication, and deliver us for your own sake: grant us favor in the presence of our captors,

15. Afin que toute la terre sache que vous êtes le Seigneurnotre Dieu, Car votre nom a été invoqué surIsraël et sur sa race.

15. that the whole earth may know that you are the LORD, our God, and that Israel and his descendants bear your name.

16. Regardez-nous, Seigneur, de votre demeure sainte, songezà nous; Inclinez votre oreille et écoutez;

16. O LORD, look down from your holy dwelling and take thought of us; turn, O LORD, your ear to hear us.

17. Ouvrez les yeux et considérez: Ce ne sont pas lesmorts, habitants du sombre séjour, Dont l'esprit est sortide leurs entrailles, Qui rendent gloire au Seigneur et publientses justices;

17. Look directly at us, and behold: it is not the dead in the nether world, whose spirits have been taken from within them, who will give glory and vindication to the LORD.

18. Mais le vivant, attristé de la grandeur de ses maux,Qui marche courbé et sans force, Dont les yeux sontlanguissants, Le vivant que presse la faim, C'est lui qui vousrend gloire Et publie vos justices, Seigneur.

18. He whose soul is deeply grieved, who walks bowed and feeble, with failing eyes and famished soul, will declare your glory and justice, LORD!

19. Car ce n'est pas à cause de la justice de nospères et de nos rois Que nous espérons obtenir devous miséricorde, Seigneur notre Dieu.

19. "Not on the just deeds of our fathers and our kings do we base our plea for mercy in your sight, O LORD, our God.

20. Car vous avez envoyé sur nous votre colère etvotre indignation, Comme vous l'aviez annoncé par vosserviteurs les prophètes, En disant: Ainsi parle leSeigneur:

20. You have brought your wrath and anger down upon us, as you had warned us through your servants the prophets:

21. "Inclinez vos épaules [et votre cou] Et servez le roide Babylone, Et vous demeurerez dans le pays que j'aidonné à vos pères.

21. 'Thus says the LORD: Bend your shoulders to the service of the king of Babylon, that you may continue in the land I gave your fathers:

22. Que si vous n'écoutez pas la voix du Seigneur votreDieu En servant le roi de Babylone,

22. for if you do not hear the LORD'S voice so as to serve the king of Babylon,

23. Je ferai cesser dans les villes de Juda et hors deJérusalem Les chants de joie et d'allégresse, Lechant du fiancé et le chant de la fiancée, Et toutle pays deviendra un désert, sans habitants."

23. I will make to cease from the cities of Judah and from the streets of Jerusalem The sounds of joy and the sounds of gladness, the voice of the bridegroom and the voice of the bride; And all the land shall be deserted, without inhabitants.'

24. Nous n'avons pas écouté votre voix En servant leroi de Babylone, Et vous avez accompli vos parolesprononcées par vos serviteurs les prophètes,Annonçant que les ossements de nos rois et les ossementsde nos pères Seraient ôtés de leurssépulcres.

24. But we did not heed your voice, or serve the king of Babylon, and you fulfilled the threats you had made through your servants the prophets, to have the bones of our kings and the bones of our fathers brought out from their burial places.

25. Et leurs restes ont été en effet jetéssur le sol, Exposés aux ardeurs du soleil et au froid dela nuit, Et ceux qui sont morts ont péri dans de cruellessouffrances, Par la faim, par le glaive et par la peste.

25. And indeed, they lie exposed to the heat of day and the frost of night. They died in dire anguish, by hunger and the sword and plague.

26. Vous avez réduit le temple, où votre nométait invoqué, Dans l'état où il estaujourd'hui, A cause de la méchanceté de la maisond'Israël et de la maison de Juda.

26. And you reduced the house which bears your name to what it is today, for the wickedness of the kingdom of Israel and the kingdom of Judah.

27. Vous avez agi envers nous, Seigneur notre Dieu, Selon toutevotre bonté et selon toute votre grandemiséricorde,

27. "But with us, O Lord, our God, you have dealt in all your clemency and in all your great mercy.

28. Comme vous l'aviez déclaré par votre serviteurMoïse, Au jour où vous lui ordonnâtesd'écrire la loi En présence des enfantsd'Israël,

28. This was your warning through your servant Moses, the day you ordered him to write down your law in the presence of the Israelites:

29. If you do not heed my voice, surely this great and numerous throng will dwindle away among the nations to which I will scatter them.

30. Car je sais bien que ce peuple ne m'écoutera pas, Parceque c'est un peuple à la tête dure; Mais ilsrentreront en eux-mêmes dans le pays de leur exil;

30. For I know they will not heed me, because they are a stiff-necked people. But in the land of their captivity they shall have a change of heart;

31. Et ils sauront que je suis le Seigneur leur Dieu, Et je leurdonnerai un c?ur [qui comprenne], Et des oreilles quientendent.

31. they shall know that I, the LORD, am their God. I will give them hearts, and heedful ears;

32. Et ils me loueront dans le pays de leur exil, Et ils sesouviendront de mon nom.

32. and they shall praise me in the land of their captivity, and shall invoke my name.

33. Ils renonceront à leur cou raide et à leursmaximes perverses, Parce qu'ils se souviendront du sort de leurspères Qui ont péché devant le Seigneur.

33. Then they shall turn back from their stiff-necked stubbornness, and from their evil deeds, because they shall remember the fate of their fathers who sinned against the LORD.

34. Et je les ramènerai dans le pays Que j'ai promis parserment à leurs pères, A Abraham, à Isaac età Jacob, Et ils en seront les maîtres, Et je lesmultiplierai, et ils ne diminueront point.

34. And I will bring them back to the land which with my oath I promised to their fathers, to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob; and they shall rule it. I will make them increase; they shall not then diminish.

35. Je ferai avec eux une alliance éternelle, Afin que jesois leur Dieu Et qu'ils soient mon peuple, Et je ne chasseraiplus mon peuple d'Israël Du pays que je leur aidonné.

35. And I will establish for them, as an eternal covenant, that I will be their God, and they shall be my people; and I will not again remove my people Israel from the land I gave them.
