1. And he went out from thence, and came into his own country; and his disciples follow him.

1. Leaving that place, Jesus returned to his own country, and his disciples followed him.

2. And when the sabbath day was come, he began to teach in the synagogue: and many hearing [him] were astonished, saying, From whence hath this [man] these things? and what wisdom [is] this which is given unto him, that even such mighty works are wrought by his hands?

2. When the sabbath came, he began teaching in the synagogue, and most of those who heard him were astonished. They commented, "How did this come to him? What kind of wisdom has been given to him that he also performs such miracles?

3. Is not this the carpenter, the son of Mary, the brother of James, and Joses, and of Juda, and Simon? and are not his sisters here with us? And they were offended at him.

3. Who is he but the carpenter, the son of Mary and the brother of James and Joset and Judas and Simon? His sisters, too, are they not here among us?" So they took offense at him.

4. But Jesus said unto them, A prophet is not without honour, but in his own country, and among his own kin, and in his own house.

4. And Jesus said to them, "Prophets are despised only in their own country, among their relatives and in their own family."

5. And he could there do no mighty work, save that he laid his hands upon a few sick folk, and healed [them].

5. And he could work no miracles there, but only healed a few sick people by laying his hands on them.

6. And he marvelled because of their unbelief. And he went round about the villages, teaching.

6. Jesus himself was astounded at their unbelief. Jesus then went around the villages teaching.

7. And he called [unto him] the twelve, and began to send them forth by two and two; and gave them power over unclean spirits;

7. He called the Twelve to him and began to send them out two by two, giving them authority over evil spirits.

8. And commanded them that they should take nothing for [their] journey, save a staff only; no scrip, no bread, no money in [their] purse:

8. And he ordered them to take nothing for the journey except a staff; no food, no bag, no money in their belts.

9. But [be] shod with sandals; and not put on two coats.

9. They were to wear sandals and were not to take an extra tunic.

10. And he said unto them, In what place soever ye enter into an house, there abide till ye depart from that place.

10. And he added, "In whatever house you are welcomed, stay there until you leave the place.

11. And whosoever shall not receive you, nor hear you, when ye depart thence, shake off the dust under your feet for a testimony against them. Verily I say unto you, It shall be more tolerable for Sodom and Gomorrha in the day of judgment, than for that city.

11. If any place doesn't receive you and the people refuse to listen to you, leave after shaking the dust off your feet. It will be a testimony against them."

12. And they went out, and preached that men should repent.

12. So they set out to proclaim that this was the time to repent.

13. And they cast out many devils, and anointed with oil many that were sick, and healed [them].

13. They drove out many demons and healed many sick people by anointing them.

14. And king Herod heard [of him]; (for his name was spread abroad:) and he said, That John the Baptist was risen from the dead, and therefore mighty works do shew forth themselves in him.

14. King Herod also heard about Jesus because his name had become well-known. Some people said, "John the Baptist has been raised from the dead and that is why miraculous powers are at work in him."

15. Others said, That it is Elias. And others said, That it is a prophet, or as one of the prophets.

15. Others thought, "He is Elijah," and others, "He is a prophet like the prophets of times past."

16. But when Herod heard [thereof], he said, It is John, whom I beheaded: he is risen from the dead.

16. When Herod was told of this, he thought: "I had John beheaded, yet he has risen from the dead!"

17. For Herod himself had sent forth and laid hold upon John, and bound him in prison for Herodias' sake, his brother Philip's wife: for he had married her.

17. For this is what had happened. Herod had ordered John to be arrested and had him bound and put in prison because of Herodias, the wife of his brother Philip. Herod had married her

18. For John had said unto Herod, It is not lawful for thee to have thy brother's wife.

18. and John had told him, "It is not right for you to live with your brother's wife."

19. Therefore Herodias had a quarrel against him, and would have killed him; but she could not:

19. So Herodias held a grudge against John and wanted to kill him, but she could not

20. For Herod feared John, knowing that he was a just man and an holy, and observed him; and when he heard him, he did many things, and heard him gladly.

20. because Herod respected John. He knew John to be an upright and holy man and kept him safe. And he liked listening to him, although he became very disturbed whenever he heard him.

21. And when a convenient day was come, that Herod on his birthday made a supper to his lords, high captains, and chief [estates] of Galilee;

21. Herodias had her chance on Herod's birthday, when he gave a dinner for all the senior government officials, military chiefs and the leaders of Galilee.

22. And when the daughter of the said Herodias came in, and danced, and pleased Herod and them that sat with him, the king said unto the damsel, Ask of me whatsoever thou wilt, and I will give [it] thee.

22. On that occasion the daughter of Herodias came in and danced; and she delighted Herod and his guests. The king said to the girl, "Ask me for anything you want and I will give it to you."

23. And he sware unto her, Whatsoever thou shalt ask of me, I will give [it] thee, unto the half of my kingdom.

23. And he went so far as to say with many oaths, "I will give you anything you ask, even half my kingdom."

24. And she went forth, and said unto her mother, What shall I ask? And she said, The head of John the Baptist.

24. She went out to consult her mother, "What shall I ask for?" The mother replied, "The head of John the Baptist."

25. And she came in straightway with haste unto the king, and asked, saying, I will that thou give me by and by in a charger the head of John the Baptist.

25. The girl hurried to the king and made her request: "I want you to give me the head of John the Baptist, here and now, on a dish."

26. And the king was exceeding sorry; [yet] for his oath's sake, and for their sakes which sat with him, he would not reject her.

26. The king was very displeased, but he would not refuse in front of his guests because of his oaths.

27. And immediately the king sent an executioner, and commanded his head to be brought: and he went and beheaded him in the prison,

27. So he sent one of the bodyguards with orders to bring John's head. He went and beheaded John in prison;

28. And brought his head in a charger, and gave it to the damsel: and the damsel gave it to her mother.

28. then he brought the head on a dish and gave it to the girl. And the girl gave it to her mother.

29. And when his disciples heard [of it], they came and took up his corpse, and laid it in a tomb.

29. When John's disciples heard of this, they came and took his body and buried it.

30. And the apostles gathered themselves together unto Jesus, and told him all things, both what they had done, and what they had taught.

30. The apostles returned and reported to Jesus all they had done and taught.

31. And he said unto them, Come ye yourselves apart into a desert place, and rest a while: for there were many coming and going, and they had no leisure so much as to eat.

31. Then he said to them, "Go off by yourselves to a remote place and have some rest." For there were so many people coming and going that the apostles had no time even to eat.

32. And they departed into a desert place by ship privately.

32. And they went away in the boat to a secluded area by themselves.

33. And the people saw them departing, and many knew him, and ran afoot thither out of all cities, and outwent them, and came together unto him.

33. But people saw them leaving and many could guess where they were going. So, from all the towns they hurried there on foot, arriving ahead of them.

34. And Jesus, when he came out, saw much people, and was moved with compassion toward them, because they were as sheep not having a shepherd: and he began to teach them many things.

34. As Jesus went ashore he saw a large crowd, and he had compassion on them for they were like sheep without a shepherd. And he began a long teaching session with them.

35. And when the day was now far spent, his disciples came unto him, and said, This is a desert place, and now the time [is] far passed:

35. It was now getting late, so his disciples came to him and said, "This is a lonely place and it is now late.

36. Send them away, that they may go into the country round about, and into the villages, and buy themselves bread: for they have nothing to eat.

36. You should send the people away and let them go to the farms and villages around here to buy themselves something to eat."

37. He answered and said unto them, Give ye them to eat. And they say unto him, Shall we go and buy two hundred pennyworth of bread, and give them to eat?

37. Jesus replied, "You yourselves give them something to eat." They answered, "If we are to give them food, we must go and buy two hundred silver coins' worth of bread."

38. He saith unto them, How many loaves have ye? go and see. And when they knew, they say, Five, and two fishes.

38. But Jesus said, "You have some loaves: how many? Go and see." The disciples found out and said, "There are five loaves and two fish."

39. And he commanded them to make all sit down by companies upon the green grass.

39. Then he told them to have the people sit down together in groups on the green grass.

40. And they sat down in ranks, by hundreds, and by fifties.

40. This they did in groups of hundreds and fifties.

41. And when he had taken the five loaves and the two fishes, he looked up to heaven, and blessed, and brake the loaves, and gave [them] to his disciples to set before them; and the two fishes divided he among them all.

41. And Jesus took the five loaves and the two fish and, raising his eyes to heaven, he pronounced a blessing, broke the loaves and handed them to his disciples to distribute to the people. He also divided the two fish among them.

42. And they did all eat, and were filled.

42. They all ate and everyone had enough.

43. And they took up twelve baskets full of the fragments, and of the fishes.

43. The disciples gathered up what was left and filled twelve baskets with broken pieces of bread and fish.

44. And they that did eat of the loaves were about five thousand men.

44. Five thousand men had eaten there.

45. And straightway he constrained his disciples to get into the ship, and to go to the other side before unto Bethsaida, while he sent away the people.

45. Immediately, Jesus obliged his disciples to get into the boat and go ahead of him to the other side, towards Bethsaida, while he himself sent the crowd away.

46. And when he had sent them away, he departed into a mountain to pray.

46. And having sent the people off, he went by himself to the hillside to pray.

47. And when even was come, the ship was in the midst of the sea, and he alone on the land.

47. When evening came, the boat was far out on the lake while he was alone on the land.

48. And he saw them toiling in rowing; for the wind was contrary unto them: and about the fourth watch of the night he cometh unto them, walking upon the sea, and would have passed by them.

48. Jesus saw his disciples straining at the oars, for the wind was against them, and before daybreak he came to them walking on the lake; and he was going to pass them by.

49. But when they saw him walking upon the sea, they supposed it had been a spirit, and cried out:

49. When they saw him walking on the lake, they thought it was a ghost and cried out;

50. For they all saw him, and were troubled. And immediately he talked with them, and saith unto them, Be of good cheer: it is I; be not afraid.

50. for they all saw him and were terrified. But at once he called to them, "Courage! It's me; don't be afraid."

51. And he went up unto them into the ship; and the wind ceased: and they were sore amazed in themselves beyond measure, and wondered.

51. Then Jesus got into the boat with them and the wind died down. They were completely astonished,

52. For they considered not [the miracle] of the loaves: for their heart was hardened.

52. for they had not really grasped the fact of the loaves; their minds were dull.

53. And when they had passed over, they came into the land of Gennesaret, and drew to the shore.

53. Having crossed the lake, they came ashore at Genesaret where they tied up the boat.

54. And when they were come out of the ship, straightway they knew him,

54. As soon as they landed, people recognized Jesus

55. And ran through that whole region round about, and began to carry about in beds those that were sick, where they heard he was.

55. and ran to spread the news throughout the countryside. Wherever he was they brought to him the sick lying on their mats.

56. And whithersoever he entered, into villages, or cities, or country, they laid the sick in the streets, and besought him that they might touch if it were but the border of his garment: and as many as touched him were made whole.

56. And wherever he went, to villages, towns or farms, they laid the sick in the marketplace and begged him to let them touch just the fringe of his cloak. And all who touched him were cured.
