2 Maccabees, 15

1. But when Nicanor understood that Judas was in the places of Samaria, he purposed to set upon him with all violence on the sabbath day.

1. Nicànore poi, avendo appreso che gli uomini di Giuda si trovavano nei pressi della Samaria, decise di assalirli con tutta sicurezza nel giorno del riposo.

2. And when the Jews that were constrained to follow him, said: Do not act so fiercely and barbarously, but give honour to the day that is sanctified: and reverence him that beholdeth all things:

2. Gli dissero, allora, i Giudei che lo seguivano per necessità: "Non li far perire in maniera così selvaggia e barbara, ma rendi piuttosto gloria a quel giorno che a preferenza degli altri è stato onorato con la santità da Colui che veglia su tutte le cose".

3. That unhappy man asked, if there were a mighty One in heaven, that had commanded the sabbath day to be kept.

3. Ma quel tre volte scellerato domandò se vi fosse in cielo un sovrano che avesse ordinato di celebrare il giorno del sabato.

4. And when they answered: There is the living Lord himself in heaven, the mighty One, that commanded the seventh day to be kept,

4. Gli risposero: "Vi è il Signore vivente. Egli è il sovrano del cielo, che ha ordinato di osservare il sabato".

5. Then he said: And I am mighty upon the earth, and I command to take arms, and to do the king's business. Nevertheless he prevailed not to accomplish his design.

5. L'altro ribatté: "Anch'io sono un sovrano sulla terra e ordino di prendere le armi e di eseguire gli ordini del re". Tuttavia non riuscì ad eseguire il suo crudele disegno.

6. So Nicanor being puffed up with exceeding great pride, thought to set up a public monument of his victory over Judas.

6. In verità Nicànore, gonfiandosi con tutta la sua arroganza, aveva deciso di erigere un pubblico trofeo con le spoglie degli uomini di Giuda.

7. But Machabeus ever trusted with all hope that God would help them.

7. Il Maccabeo però era fermamente convinto, con ogni speranza, di ottenere soccorso dal Signore.

8. And he exhorted his people not to fear the coming of the nations, but to remember the help they had before received from heaven, and now to hope for victory from the Almighty.

8. Perciò esortava i suoi a non temere l'attacco dei gentili, ma a tener presenti nella mente gli aiuti che in passato erano stati loro concessi dal cielo e a sperare anche nel presente che dall'Onnipotente sarebbe loro venuta la vittoria.

9. And speaking to them out of the law, and the prophets, and withal putting them in mind of the battles they had fought before, he made them more cheerful:

9. Confortatili con parole della legge e dei profeti, ricordò poi anche le battaglie che essi stessi avevano combattuto e li rese più audaci.

10. Then after he had encouraged them, he shewed withal the falsehood of the Gentiles, and their breach of oaths.

10. Rinfrancati così i loro animi, denunziò e insieme dimostrò la perfidia dei pagani e la loro violazione dei giuramenti.

11. So he armed every one of them, not with defence of shield and spear, but with very good speeches and exhortations, and told them a dream worthy to be believed, whereby he rejoiced them all.

11. Avendo in questo modo armato ciascuno di loro, non con la sicurezza degli scudi e delle lance, ma col conforto delle buone parole, narrò infine un sogno degno di fede, una specie di visione che li rallegrò tutti.

12. Now the vision was in this manner: Onias who had been high priest, a good and virtuous man, modest in his looks, gentle in his manners, and graceful in his speech, and who from a child was exercised in virtues, holding up his hands, prayed for all the people of the Jews:

12. La sua visione era questa. Onia, l'ex sommo sacerdote, uomo onesto e buono, modesto nell'aspetto, mite nel tratto, elegantemente spedito nel parlare e fin da fanciullo esercitato nella pratica di tutte le virtù, con le mani protese pregava per tutta la comunità dei Giudei.

13. After this there appeared also an- other man, admirable for age, and glory, and environed with great beauty and majesty :

13. Poi, nello stesso modo, era apparso un uomo distinto per età e maestà, circonfuso di una gloria meravigliosa e splendidissima.

14. Then Onias answering, Raid: This is a lover of his brethren, and of the people of Israel: this is he that prayeth much for the people, and for all the holy city, Jeremias the prophet of God.

14. Prendendo la parola, Onia disse: "Questi è l'amico dei suoi fratelli, che prega molto per il popolo e per la santa città: Geremia, il profeta di Dio".

15. Whereupon Jeremias stretched forth his right hand, and gave to Judas a sword of gold, saying:

15. Quindi Geremia, stendendo la destra, consegnò a Giuda una spada d'oro, dicendo nell'atto di consegnargliela:

16. Take this holy sword a gift from God, wherewith thou shalt overthrow the adversaries of my people Israel.

16. "Prendi questa santa spada, dono di Dio; con essa farai a pezzi gli avversari".

17. Thus being exhorted with the words of Judas, which were very good, and proper to stir up the courage, and strengthen the hearts of the young men, they resolved to fight, and to set upon them manfully : that valour might decide the matter, because the holy city and the temple were in danger.

17. Incoraggiati da queste parole di Giuda, veramente belle e capaci di incitare al valore e di rendere virili gli animi dei giovani, decisero di non attardarsi nell'accampamento, ma di attaccare coraggiosamente e di risolvere l'affare gettandosi nella mischia con tutto il vigore, perché tanto la città quanto le cose sante e il tempio erano in pericolo.

18. For their concern was less for their wives, and children, and for their brethren, and kinsfolks: but their greatest and principal fear was for the holiness of the temple.

18. Infatti il timore per le mogli e per i figli, come per i fratelli e i parenti, era in essi cosa di poco conto in confronto a quello, grandissimo e primario, per il tempio consacrato.

19. And they also that were in the city, had no little concern for them that were to be engaged in battle.

19. Intanto anche tra quelli rimasti in città non minore era la loro angustia, preoccupati com'erano per lo scontro in aperta campagna.

20. And now when all expected what judgment would be given, and the enemies were at hand, and the army was set in array, the beasts and the horsemen ranged in convenient places,

20. Tutti ormai attendevano una risoluzione prossima, essendo già i nemici vicini, l'esercito schierato, le bestie disposte in posizione conveniente e la cavalleria ordinata ai lati.

21. Machabeus considering the coming of the multitude, and the divers preparations of armour, and the fierceness of the beasts, stretching out his hands to heaven, called upon the Lord, that worketh wonders, who giveth victory to them that are worthy, not according to the power of their arms, but according as it seemeth good to him.

21. Al vedersi davanti tale moltitudine, la varietà delle armi preparate e la ferocia delle bestie, il Maccabeo stese le mani al cielo e invocò il Signore, operatore di prodigi, ben sapendo che non per virtù delle armi, ma a coloro che ne son degni egli procura la vittoria, quando lo giudica opportuno.

22. And in his prayer he said after this manner: Thou, O Lord, who didst send thy angel in the time of Ezechias king of Juda, and didst kill a hundred and eighty-five thousand of the army of Sennacherib:

22. Pregando si espresse in questo modo: "Tu, o sovrano, al tempo di Ezechia re della Giudea inviasti il tuo angelo, il quale fece perire centottantacinquemila uomini.

23. Send now also, 0 Lord of heaven, thy good angel before us, for the fear and dread of the greatness of thy arm,

23. Invia anche ora, o sovrano del mondo, un angelo buono davanti a noi per incutere timore e spavento.

24. That they may be afraid, who come with blasphemy against thy holy people. And thus he concluded his prayer.

24. Con la potenza del tuo braccio siano colpiti quelli che, bestemmiando, sono venuti contro il tuo santo popolo". Con queste parole terminò.

25. But Nicanor, and they that were with him came forward, with trumpets and songs.

25. Gli uomini di Nicànore intanto avanzavano tra suoni di trombe e canti di guerra.

26. But Judas, and they that were with him, encountered them, calling upon God by prayers:

26. Gli uomini di Giuda, invece, si gettarono nella mischia contro i nemici tra invocazioni e preghiere.

27. So fighting with their hands, but praying to the Lord with their hearts, they slew no less than five and thirty thousand, being greatly cheered with the presence of God.

27. Combattendo con le mani, ma con i cuori pregando Dio, ne abbatterono non meno di trentacinquemila e si rallegrarono grandemente per questa manifestazione divina.

28. And when the battle was over, and they were returning with joy, they understood that Nicanor was slain in his armour.

28. Cessato il combattimento, mentre con gioia si ritiravano, riconobbero Nicànore caduto con la sua armatura.

29. Then making a shout, and a great noise, they blessed the Almighty Lord in their own language.

29. Fu un esplodere di grida e di confusione. Dopo di che benedissero l'Onnipotente nella lingua paterna.

30. And Judas, who was altogether ready, in body and mind, to die for his countrymen, commanded that Nicanor's head, and his hand with the shoulder should be cut off, and carried to Jerusalem.

30. Colui che, corpo ed anima, era stato sempre in prima linea nella lotta per i cittadini e che aveva conservato per i suoi connazionali l'affetto dell'età giovanile, comandò allora di mozzare la testa di Nicànore, la sua destra con il braccio e di portarli a Gerusalemme.

31. And when he was come thither, having called together his countrymen, and the priests to the altar, he sent also for them that were in the castle,

31. Qui giunto, dopo aver convocato i connazionali e i sacerdoti, stando davanti all'altare, mandò a chiamare quelli dell'Acra.

32. And shewing them the head of Nicenor, and the wicked hand, which he had stretched out, with proud boasts, against the holy house of the Almighty God,

32. Quindi, mostrata loro la testa dell'impuro Nicànore e la mano che quel bestemmiatore aveva steso con arroganza contro la santa casa dell'Onnipotente,

33. He commanded also, that the tongue of the wicked Nicanor, should be cut out and given by pieces to birds, and the hand of the furious man to be hanged up over against the temple.

33. comandò che, recisa anche la lingua, a pezzi fosse data in pasto agli uccelli e che la mercede della sua follia fosse appesa davanti al tempio.

34. Then all blessed the Lord of heaven, saying: Blessed be he that hath kept his own place undefiled.

34. Tutti allora, rivolti al cielo, benedissero il Signore glorioso, dicendo: "Benedetto sia colui che ha conservato incontaminato il suo luogo!".

35. And he hung up Nicanor's head in the top of the castle, that it might be an evident and manifest sign of the help of God.

35. Giuda poi fece appendere all'Acra la testa di Nicànore come segno chiaro e manifesto a tutti dell'aiuto del Signore.

36. And they all ordained by a common decree, by no means to let this day pass without solemnity:

36. Infine, con comune suffragio, decretarono tutti insieme di non lasciare in nessun modo tale giorno senza un riconoscimento, ma di solennizzarlo il 13 del dodicesimo mese, che in lingua siriaca si chiama Adar, un giorno prima della festa di Mardocheo.

37. But to celebrate the thirteenth day of the month of Adar, called, in the Syrian language, the day before Mardochias' day.

37. Così, dunque, andarono le cose riguardo a Nicànore. E poiché da quei tempi la città rimase in possesso dei Giudei, qui stesso anch'io porrò fine al mio discorso.

38. So these things being done with relation to Nicanor, and from that time the city being possessed by the Hebrews, I also will here make an end of my narration.

38. Se la composizione è riuscita bene, è ciò che anch'io volevo; ma se è di poco conto e mediocre, è tutto ciò che potevo fare.

39. Which if I have done well, and as it becometh the history, it is what I desired: but if not so perfectly, it must be pardoned me.

39. Come, infatti, il bere solo vino è nocivo, allo stesso modo che la sola acqua, mentre il vino mescolato con acqua è gradevole e procura un piacere delizioso, così è pure della preparazione di un discorso che voglia deliziare le orecchie dei lettori della composizione. Qui perciò sarà la fine.

40. For as it is hurtful to drink always wine, or always water, but pleasant to use sometimes the one, and sometimes the other: so if the speech be always nicely framed, it will not be grateful to the readers. But here it shall be ended.
