II Macabeus, 15
1. Ouvindo falar que Judas e seus aliados estavam nas fronteiras da Samaria, resolveu Nicanor atacá-los com toda a segurança no dia do repouso sabático.
1. But when Nicanor understood that Judas was in the places of Samaria, he purposed to set upon him with all violence on the sabbath day.
2. Os judeus, obrigados por ele a segui-lo, disseram-lhe: “Não faças um massacre tão selvagem e tão bárbaro, mas respeita por teu lado o dia escolhido e especialmente santificado por aquele que tudo vê”.
2. And when the Jews that were constrained to follow him, said: Do not act so fiercely and barbarously, but give honour to the day that is sanctified: and reverence him that beholdeth all things:
3. Mas esse tríplice celerado perguntou se existia no céu um soberano que houvesse prescrito observar o dia de sábado.
3. That unhappy man asked, if there were a mighty One in heaven, that had commanded the sabbath day to be kept.
4. Como eles respondessem: “Foi o mesmo Senhor vivo, Todo-poderoso no céu, quem ordenou a celebração do sétimo dia”.
4. And when they answered: There is the living Lord himself in heaven, the mighty One, that commanded the seventh day to be kept,
5. O outro replicou: “Também eu sou poderoso na terra e ordeno que se tomem as armas e se executem as ordens do rei”. Todavia, não pôde executar seu desígnio criminoso.
5. Then he said: And I am mighty upon the earth, and I command to take arms, and to do the king's business. Nevertheless he prevailed not to accomplish his design.
6. Enquanto Nicanor, no auge de seu orgulho, decidia erigir um troféu com os despojos de Judas e seus companheiros,
6. So Nicanor being puffed up with exceeding great pride, thought to set up a public monument of his victory over Judas.
7. Macabeu, ao contrário, deixava-se levar por uma inteira confiança de que haveria de obter auxílio do Senhor.
7. But Machabeus ever trusted with all hope that God would help them.
8. Exortava os seus companheiros a que não temessem o ataque dos gentios, a que se lembrassem dos auxílios já obtidos do céu e a que esperassem, pois também agora o Todo-poderoso lhes concederia a vitória.
8. And he exhorted his people not to fear the coming of the nations, but to remember the help they had before received from heaven, and now to hope for victory from the Almighty.
9. Encorajou-os citando a Lei e os profetas, lembrou-lhes os combates outrora sustentados e inflamou-os desse modo com um novo ardor.
9. And speaking to them out of the law, and the prophets, and withal putting them in mind of the battles they had fought before, he made them more cheerful:
10. Após ter-lhes reanimado o espírito, estimulou-os ainda, apresentando aos seus olhos a perfídia dos gentios e o desprezo da palavra dada.
10. Then after he had encouraged them, he shewed withal the falsehood of the Gentiles, and their breach of oaths.
11. Assim armou a todos não com a segurança que vem das lanças e dos escudos, mas com a coragem que suscitam as boas palavras. Narrou-lhes ainda uma visão digna de fé, uma espécie de visão que os cumulou de alegria.
11. So he armed every one of them, not with defence of shield and spear, but with very good speeches and exhortations, and told them a dream worthy to be believed, whereby he rejoiced them all.
12. Eis o que tinha visto: Onias, que foi sumo sacerdote, homem nobre e bom, modesto em seu aspecto, de caráter ameno, distinto em sua linguagem e exercitado desde menino na prática de todas as virtudes, com as mãos levantadas, orava por todo o povo judeu.
12. Now the vision was in this manner: Onias who had been high priest, a good and virtuous man, modest in his looks, gentle in his manners, and graceful in his speech, and who from a child was exercised in virtues, holding up his hands, prayed for all the people of the Jews:
13. Em seguida, apareceu do mesmo modo um homem com os cabelos todos brancos, de aparência muito venerável e nimbado por uma admirável e magnífica majestade.
13. After this there appeared also an- other man, admirable for age, and glory, and environed with great beauty and majesty :
14. Então, tomando a palavra, disse-lhe Onias: “Eis o amigo de seus irmãos, aquele que reza muito pelo povo e pela cidade santa, Jeremias, o profeta de Deus”.
14. Then Onias answering, Raid: This is a lover of his brethren, and of the people of Israel: this is he that prayeth much for the people, and for all the holy city, Jeremias the prophet of God.
15. E Jeremias, estendendo a mão, entregou a Judas uma espada de ouro, dizendo estas palavras ao entregá-la:
15. Whereupon Jeremias stretched forth his right hand, and gave to Judas a sword of gold, saying:
16. “Toma esta santa espada que Deus te concede e com a qual esmagarás os inimigos”.
16. Take this holy sword a gift from God, wherewith thou shalt overthrow the adversaries of my people Israel.
17. Entusiasmados pelas palavras de Judas, tão nobres e tão capazes de excitar a coragem e robustecer as almas dos jovens, decidiram os judeus não acampar, mas arrojar-se para a frente, travar com valor a batalha e obter assim uma decisão, porque a cidade, a religião e o templo estavam em perigo.
17. Thus being exhorted with the words of Judas, which were very good, and proper to stir up the courage, and strengthen the hearts of the young men, they resolved to fight, and to set upon them manfully : that valour might decide the matter, because the holy city and the temple were in danger.
18. Não lhes causavam tanta preocupação as mulheres, as crianças, seus irmãos e seus parentes. A primeira e principal inquietação que tinham era a purificação do templo.
18. For their concern was less for their wives, and children, and for their brethren, and kinsfolks: but their greatest and principal fear was for the holiness of the temple.
19. Não era menor a angústia dos que tinham ficado na cidade, ansiosos pela luta que ia ser travada fora, na planície.
19. And they also that were in the city, had no little concern for them that were to be engaged in battle.
20. Todos já aguardavam a batalha decisiva, prestes a se iniciar. Os inimigos também já se tinham reunido para o combate, os elefantes estavam postados no lugar conveniente, a cavalaria disposta nas alas.
20. And now when all expected what judgment would be given, and the enemies were at hand, and the army was set in array, the beasts and the horsemen ranged in convenient places,
21. Macabeu, à vista dessa multidão imensa, do aparato de armas tão diversas e do aspecto temível dos elefantes, estendeu as mãos para o céu e invocou o Senhor que opera prodígios. Sabia muito bem que não é o poderio das armas que obtém a vitória, senão que Deus a decide, outorgando-a aos que ele julga dignos dela.
21. Machabeus considering the coming of the multitude, and the divers preparations of armour, and the fierceness of the beasts, stretching out his hands to heaven, called upon the Lord, that worketh wonders, who giveth victory to them that are worthy, not according to the power of their arms, but according as it seemeth good to him.
22. Eis como foi sua oração: “Senhor, vós, que no tempo de Ezequias, rei da Judeia, enviastes vosso anjo e fizestes perecer cento e oitenta e cinco mil homens do exército de Senaquerib,
22. And in his prayer he said after this manner: Thou, O Lord, who didst send thy angel in the time of Ezechias king of Juda, and didst kill a hundred and eighty-five thousand of the army of Sennacherib:
23. enviai, pois, ainda agora, ó soberano dos céus, um bom anjo que nos preceda, infundindo temor e espanto.
23. Send now also, 0 Lord of heaven, thy good angel before us, for the fear and dread of the greatness of thy arm,
24. Que vosso braço se estenda e extermine aqueles que, blasfemando, vieram atacar vosso povo santo”. E, com essas palavras, concluiu sua prece.
24. That they may be afraid, who come with blasphemy against thy holy people. And thus he concluded his prayer.
25. De um lado, as tropas de Nicanor avançavam ao som das trombetas e dos hinos guerreiros;
25. But Nicanor, and they that were with him came forward, with trumpets and songs.
26. do outro lado, os de Judas travavam a batalha entre invocações e orações.
26. But Judas, and they that were with him, encountered them, calling upon God by prayers:
27. Enquanto pelejavam com as mãos, oravam ao Senhor no coração, e assim derribaram por terra nada menos que trinta e cinco mil homens e alegraram-se por verem Deus manifestar-se desse modo.
27. So fighting with their hands, but praying to the Lord with their hearts, they slew no less than five and thirty thousand, being greatly cheered with the presence of God.
28. Concluída a batalha, dispersaram-se felizes, quando reconheceram Nicanor prostrado com a sua armadura.
28. And when the battle was over, and they were returning with joy, they understood that Nicanor was slain in his armour.
29. Então, entre gritos e alvoroço, louvaram o Senhor na língua paterna.
29. Then making a shout, and a great noise, they blessed the Almighty Lord in their own language.
30. Aquele que se consagrara de corpo e alma a serviço de seus concidadãos e conservara para com seus compatriotas o amor de sua juventude, ordenou que degolassem a cabeça de Nicanor, como também a mão e o braço, e os levassem a Jerusalém.
30. And Judas, who was altogether ready, in body and mind, to die for his countrymen, commanded that Nicanor's head, and his hand with the shoulder should be cut off, and carried to Jerusalem.
31. Chegado à cidade, convocou seus compatriotas, dispôs os sacerdotes diante do altar e mandou aproximarem-se também os que se achavam na fortaleza.
31. And when he was come thither, having called together his countrymen, and the priests to the altar, he sent also for them that were in the castle,
32. Apresentou-lhes a cabeça do impuro Nicanor e a mão, que este maldito havia insolentemente estendido contra a morada do Todo-poderoso.
32. And shewing them the head of Nicenor, and the wicked hand, which he had stretched out, with proud boasts, against the holy house of the Almighty God,
33. Depois mandou cortar a língua do ímpio para lançá-la em pedaços aos pássaros e mandou suspender diante do templo o braço decepado, como castigo de sua insensatez.
33. He commanded also, that the tongue of the wicked Nicanor, should be cut out and given by pieces to birds, and the hand of the furious man to be hanged up over against the temple.
34. E todos puseram-se a louvar nestes termos o Senhor que se tinha manifestado: “Bendito seja aquele que preservou sua morada de toda a impureza”.
34. Then all blessed the Lord of heaven, saying: Blessed be he that hath kept his own place undefiled.
35. Judas suspendeu do mesmo modo a cabeça de Nicanor, na parte exterior da fortaleza, como sinal palpável e evidente da proteção do Senhor.
35. And he hung up Nicanor's head in the top of the castle, that it might be an evident and manifest sign of the help of God.
36. De comum acordo, foi estabelecido que, doravante, não se deixaria passar esse dia sem festejá-lo e que seria celebrada no dia treze do duodécimo mês, chamado Adar em língua siríaca, a vigília do dia de Mardoqueu.*
36. And they all ordained by a common decree, by no means to let this day pass without solemnity:
37. Assim se desenrolaram os acontecimentos relativos a Nicanor, e já que a partir dessa época Jerusalém permaneceu em poder dos hebreus, finalizarei aqui minha narração.
37. But to celebrate the thirteenth day of the month of Adar, called, in the Syrian language, the day before Mardochias' day.
38. Se ela está felizmente concebida e ordenada, era este o meu desejo. Se ela está imperfeita e medíocre, é porque não pude fazer melhor.
38. So these things being done with relation to Nicanor, and from that time the city being possessed by the Hebrews, I also will here make an end of my narration.
39. Assim como é nocivo beber somente o vinho ou somente a água, mas agradável e verdadeiramente proveitoso beber a água e o vinho misturados, assim também a disposição agradável do relato é o que causa prazer aos ouvidos do leitor. E aqui termino.
39. Which if I have done well, and as it becometh the history, it is what I desired: but if not so perfectly, it must be pardoned me.
40.
40. For as it is hurtful to drink always wine, or always water, but pleasant to use sometimes the one, and sometimes the other: so if the speech be always nicely framed, it will not be grateful to the readers. But here it shall be ended.
