Jeremiah, 35

15. And I have sent to you all my servants, the prophets, rising at first light, and sending, and saying: ‘Convert, each one from his wicked way, and make your intentions good. And do not choose to follow strange gods, nor shall you worship them. And then you shall live in the land which I gave to you and to your fathers.’ And yet you have not inclined your ear, and you have not heeded me.

Jeremiah 35 narrates the story of the Recabitas, a family who had committed to following the commandments of his Jonadab ancestor. God uses the faithfulness of the recabilities as an example for the people of Judah, who had moved away from him. The verses related to the themes of this chapter are:

Exodus 20:12: "Honor Your Father and Your Mother, that you may have a long life on the earth that the Lord, your God, gives you." The Recabitals honored and obeyed their ancestor, Jonadab, demonstrating respect for the traditions and teachings of their ancestors.

Proverbs 20:7: "The righteous walks in his integrity; happy are his children after him." The recabilities were rewarded for their faithfulness and integrity, being promised to them that they would always have descendants.

Nehemiah 8:1-3: This chapter tells about the public reading of God's law and how people heard and understood it. The recabilities also maintained the oral tradition of their family and obeyed it diligently.

Matthew 7:21: "Not everyone who says to me, 'Lord, Lord,' will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only the will of my father who is in heaven." The recabilities were faithful to the will of their ancestor, showing that obedience is more important than simply saying the right words.

Acts 5:29: "Peter and the other apostles answered, 'It is necessary to obey God rather than men!" The recabilities chose to obey God and the traditions of their family, even if it meant disobeying the king of Judah.
