Judith, 8

11. When they came, she said to them: "Listen to me, you rulers of the people of Bethulia. What you said to the people today is not proper. When you promised to hand over the city to our enemies at the end of five days unless within that time the Lord comes to our aid, you interposed between God and yourselves this oath which you took.

Judite 8 describes how Judith convinced the elders of her city to allow her to leave the city gates to surrender to the Assyrians. She used her wisdom and eloquence to persuade them that this was the only way to save the city. Proverbs 16:32: "Better is the Longanic than the brave, and the one who rules his spirit than what a city takes." This verse emphasizes the importance of self -control, a quality that Judith demonstrated in carefully planning and executing his plan with patience and skill.
