Lamentations, 1

20. RES. See, O Lord, that I am in tribulation. My bowels have been disturbed, my heart has been subverted within me, for I am filled with bitterness. Outside, the sword puts to death, and at home there is a similar death.

Lamentations 1 is the first chapter of the book of lamentations, which presents a collection of poems that express deep sadness and regret for the destruction of Jerusalem and the suffering of the people of Judah. Chapter 1 presents Jerusalem personified as a lonely and abandoned woman who suffers divine punishment for her sins. Following are five verses related to the topics addressed in lamentations 1:

Isaiah 64:10: "Your Holy Cities have become deserted; Zion became desert, Jerusalem in sillow." This verse describes the destruction of sacred cities and the desolation of Jerusalem, which is a central theme of lamentations 1.

Psalm 137:1: "Next to the rivers of Babylon, we settle there and cry, when we remember Zion." This verse shows the pain and sadness of the exiles in Babylon, who remember their homeland and cry for the loss of Jerusalem.

Isaiah 51:19: "These two things came to you, who shall it be compassioned on? This verse shows God's sadness for the suffering of Jerusalem and the sense of impotence in the face of destruction.

Psalm 22:1: "God, my God, why have you forsaken me? Why do you endure you from my aid and the words of my busty?" This verse expresses the sense of abandonment and loneliness that Jerusalem experiences, personified as a lonely woman in lamentations 1.

Jeremiah 9:1: "Ah! I had given me a hut in the desert to pilgrimage away from my people! Because they are all adulters, a bunch of traitors." This verse expresses the desire for isolation in the face of the corruption and infidelity of the people, a theme present in lamentations 1.
