Deuteronomy, 2

14. From Kadesh-Barnea to the crossing of the Wadi Zered our wanderings had taken thirty-eight years; as a result of which, the entire generation of those of age to bear arms had been eliminated, as Yahweh had sworn to them.

Deuteronomy 2 narrates the journey of the Israelites through the desert and its encounter with other nations, including the Edomites and Moabites. Deuteronomy 2:4-"Give him war, fight him." This verse is God's instruction for the Israelites to fight against the people of Seom, the king of the Amorites. He shows that although the Israelites were on a journey to the promised land, they would still have to fight for it.

Deuteronomy 2:19 - "And you have not contained with them, nor with Moab; you did not fight them, there was nor battle." Moses reminds the Israelites that they should not fight the Moabites, for God gave them that earth as inheritance. This highlights the importance of respecting the earth and the people who are not enemies.

Deuteronomy 2:25 - "From today I will begin to put the terror and fear of you over the peoples under the whole heaven, who hear your fame and shake before you." God promised to the Israelites that he would put fear in the hearts of the peoples they found on the way to the promised land. This shows that the victory of the Israelites did not depend only on their military skills, but on divine intervention.

Deuteronomy 2:30 - "And Seom, king of Hesbom, did not want us to go through his earth; for the Lord thy God has hardened His Spirit, and made his heart stubborn, to deliver into thy hand, as he sees today. " This verse highlights the belief that God was controlling the fate of the Israelites and that his enemies were being delivered into his hands by divine will.

Deuteronomy 2:37 - "Only with the land of the children of Ammon you have not arrived, neither to the entire Ribeira Jaboque, nor to the cities in the mountain, nor anywhere the Lord our God has forbidden." This verse resembles the Israelites that they should not fight the children of Ammon, for God did not give them this land. This highlights the importance of respecting the limits defined by God and not seeking more than they were promised.
