Esther, 1

3. In the third year of his reign, he made a feast unto all his princes and his servants; the power of Persia and Media, the nobles and princes of the provinces, [being] before him:

Esther 1 describes a feast offered by King Ahasuero to the nobles and princes of his kingdom. For seven days, they celebrated and drank in abundance. On the seventh day, the king ordered his queen, Vasti, to attend before him and the guests to show his beauty. However, Vasti refused to obey the king, which made him enraged. Proverbs 20:1: "Wine is scoffing, the strong berry drink; and everyone who errss in them will never be wise." Esther's chapter 1 describes excessive drink during King Ahasuero's banquet. This verse of proverbs warns about the dangers of excess alcohol.

Isaiah 5:11: "Woe to those who get up early to follow the drunkenness and are looking for a strong drink, remaining until night, until the wine warms them!" This verse denounces those who surrender to drink and warns of the evils that this practice can bring.

Proverbs 31:4-5: "It is not proper to kings, O Lemuel, it is not proper to the kings to drink wine, nor the princes to want strong drink; so that drinking forget the law, and pervert the right of all afflicted." Proverbs 25:28: "As a knocked city, which has no walls, so is the man who cannot contain his spirit." King Ahasuero demonstrates a lack of self -control and temperance by enraging himself with Vasti.
