Chapter 2 of Philippians addresses Christ's humility as an example for Christians. Paul urges the Philippians to have the same attitude of Christ, who emptied himself from his divine glory to become a servant and die on the cross for the sins of humanity. He emphasizes the importance of unity and cooperation among Christians, avoiding envy, selfishness and murmuring. Following are five verses from other Bible books that relate to the topics covered in Philippians 2.
John 13:14: "Now, if I, Lord and Master, wash my feet, you must also wash each other's feet." In this verse, Jesus teaches his disciples to serve each other, something Paul also emphasizes in Philippians 2:3-4. He highlights the importance of humility and service, something that was exemplified by the attitude of Christ.
1 Peter 5:5: "Similarly young people, thirst subject to the elders; and thirst all subjects to each other, and cover humility, because God resists the superb, but gives grace to the humble." Peter also emphasizes the importance of humility and mutual submission among Christians. He points out that humility is an essential virtue for pleasing God and achieving his grace.
James 4:10, "Humiliate you before the Lord, and he shall exalt you." James urges Christians to humble themselves before God, recognizing their dependence and necessity of the Lord. This attitude of humility is a way of honoring God and being exalted by Him, something Paul also highlights in Philippians 2:9-11.
1 Corinthians 10:24: "No one seeks their own advantage, rather each one of others." Paul emphasizes in Philippians 2:3-4 the importance of not seeking his own interest, but the interest of others. This verse in 1 Corinthians 10 also emphasizes the importance of cooperation and altruism among Christians.
Colossians 3:12: "Coat, therefore, as elected from God, holy and beloved, of affection affections of mercy, goodness, humility, meekness, long-term." This verse highlights the Christian virtues that must be cultivated by believers, including humility. Paul emphasizes in Philippians 2 the importance of having the mind of Christ, who has emptied himself of his divine glory to become a servant, and the importance of following this example in our own life.
