1 Kings, 1

13. Go in at once to King David, and say to him, `Did you not, my lord the king, swear to your maidservant, saying, "Solomon your son shall reign after me, and he shall sit upon my throne"? Why then is Adoni'jah king?'

1 Kings 1 deals with David's succession to the throne of Israel. When David is already old and debilitated, Adonias, his eldest son, tries to usurp the throne for himself. However, the prophet Nathan and Bathsheba, Solomon's mother, interfere to ensure that the successor chosen by David is Solomon, the youngest son. Proverbs 20:29: "The glory of young people is their strength; and the beauty of the old are the babies." This verse highlights the physical weakness that advanced age can bring, as is the case of David in 1 Kings 1.
